UP Padayon Disaster Response Team

On December 27-29, 2011,the University of the Philippines (UP) sent a multi-disciplinary team of experts to Iligan City to provide medical relief to affected families and see how UP can best help in the overall relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Dubbed "Task Force Sendong", the team is composed of health personnel from the UP Manila Philippine General Hospital (UPM-PGH); geologists from the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS); forensic pathologists from UPM-PGH; and DNA personnel from UPD. The forensics team together with the DNA team worked with the local government and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to assist in the collection of specimens from unidentified casualties.

Aside from rendering immediate relief to the people in selected evacuation centers, Task Force Sendong will provide strategic and long-term technical support to both government and private organizations involved in disaster relief and rehabilitation. The UP team will also study the existing procedures for disaster management, propose improvements and formulate new protocols for disaster preparedness.

Team members have experience in disaster management in the Philippines and other countries and are prepared to provide immediate and long-term assistance to Iligan City.

As the national university, UP is mandated under Republic Act No. 9500 to provide various forms of community, public and volunteer service, as well as technical assistance to the government, the private sector and civil society. UP has decided to focus its assistance on Iligan City which has received less media and national attention compared to Cagayan de Oro City.

The response team mobilized by UP President Alfredo Pascual is led by Vice-President for Public Affairs J. Prospero de Vera III. The activity of UP in Iligan City is done in partnership with the Office of Senator Pimentel; the local officials of Iligan City led by Mayor Lawrence Cruz and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) local council head Frederick Siao; and non-government organizations led by Ecosystems Work for Essential Benefits (ECOWEB).

Support for the Task Force is provided by Cardinal Santos Medical Center which provided the medicines; Metro Pacific which provided airfare for 15 volunteers; and Senators Franklin Drilon, Serge Osmena, and Juan Flavier who allotted P50,000 each for the purchase of medicines through the UP PGH.
