Ang Buklod Tao at ang Barangay Banaba

ABSTRACT

Disaster risks (i.e. typhoons, earthquakes, etc.) always leave communities in the Philippines devastated. While these risks are mostly natural, its effect and impact could be cushioned with the right amount of preparation, involvement of stakeholders, and high-level of consciousness among community members. Ang Buklod Tao at ang Barangay Banaba is a documentary on a people’s organization’s community-managed climate and disaster risk reduction and management in the vulnerable community of Barangay Banaba. It follows their efforts – all geared towards increasing the community’s capacities. However, Barangay Banaba’s vulnerability is still worsened by the growing number of urban poor due to the unending influx of illegal settlers in the easements of the rivers surrounding their community; an issue that involves government properties and thus require real government action. The film looks into the relationship of Buklod Tao and the people of Barangay Banaba. It illustrates how a community could be developed and organized even with the absence of government’s proactive involvement.
