Young and Moral: A Content Analysis on the Coverage of Reproductive Health and Family Planning by Religious Magazine Publications for Teenagers and High School Students
In a recent survey conducted by Pulse-Asia Philippines, the majority of Filipinos are in favor of the Reproductive Health Bill, which serves as an ironic contrast since a large percentage of the population are also predominantly Roman Catholics. The Catholic religion is strongly opposed to the Reproductive Health Bill, especially since the documents of Humanae Vitae in 1978 and Evangelium Vitae were made.
This dissertation explores how religious magazines provide significant and contemporary literature on the Reproductive Health Bill, family planning methods and sex education to their teenagers and high school readers. Given that the publishing entities that produces the magazines and books connote that the content is set in a wholesome and Christian mindset, it simulates different scenarios and perspectives that can arguably be crucial to the development and enlightenment of their adolescent readers. Reaching out for a clue through a thorough study of the articles, brochure pull-outs, books and other published material that tackles the subject each company produces is achieved by cataloging content listing and then comparing on the bases of prevalent issues, quality and emphasis for the selected written content. As accordingly, new formats and approaches will be considered and presented that may hopefully advance the promulgation of knowledge and wisdom on values of conception, from the religious publishers to their young readers.
