Mass Panalo: A Descriptive Study of How Win Radio 107.5 Applied the Characteristics of Format Radio to its Current Programming as the Newest Mass-Oriented Station in Mega Manila
ABSTRACT
This study describes how mass-oriented radio station Win Radio 107.5 applied the characteristics of format radio to its current programming. This study was based on Joselito Pedero’s 2008 study titled “An assessment of format radio in the Philippines as applied to 99.5RT, Citilite 88.3, and NU 107”. It also aims to find out if the format radio techniques as applied to the mass-oriented format could possibly translate to the success of Win Radio 107.5’s operations.
Using the Systems Theory of Communication framework as discussed by Stephen Littlejohn, Stanley Baran, Dennis Davis, and the University of Twente, this study tried to examine how the different elements of programming were interrelated as they worked under the radio station as a single system. This was discussed through the five elements of format radio—format, three Cs of format radio (consistency, cohesiveness, concern), programming, promotions, and research. Through in-depth interviews (with Win Radio 107.5 radio personnel and Mr. Mike Pedero) as the primary method, this study showed that Win Radio 107.5 was able to apply format radio techniques through the knowledge of its target audience, total control in its radio operations, flexibility to its environment, and the adherence to the station image. However, Mr. Pedero said that the station still needed to strengthen their station’s brand by having more cohesiveness in its program elements.
The study’s findings show that success is a big possibility for Win Radio 107.5 (as a newly established mass-oriented radio station) with the way the management has handled operations for the past four months considering the stiff competition of the Mega Manila FM radio industry. This just shows that despite the threat on radio’s existence, radio stations are still surviving and evolving as they compete with other media for the audience’s attention.
