Bañez, R. O. (2011). From Tale to Television: A Descriptive Study and a Textual Analysis of the GMA-7 Television Adaptation of Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basiang, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
This thesis aims to find out how the television adaptation of fairy tales takes place. In particular, it provides a descriptive study of the television adaptation of fairy-tale themes in Severino Reyes’s Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basiang. It also presents a textual analysis of the adaptation of such themes. The examination concentrates on two episodes of GMA-7’s Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang. These are Prinsipeng Unggoy and Binibining Tumalo sa Hari that were viewed on the site YouTube. This research looks at the narrative themes, which arise in the source text and the television adaptation. Then, this study focuses on the themes that are adapted into the television production of GMA-7’s Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang. These themes shed light on the kind of treatment of physically challenged people and the dominant patriarchal view on women as inferior to men. These people are represented by Huwan and Sharay, the main characters of the narratives in this study. This manuscript discusses how the television adaptation serves as a media apparatus in propagating the ideology of the capitalist culture industry in order to maintain the status quo.
