LIFE LINE: A critical analysis of the responses of selected radio broadcasters in Metro Manila to the media killings under the Arroyo Administration
ABSTRACT
With an attempt to look at the recently concluded Arroyo Administration, this study aimed at exploring one of the most relevant issues of that time – the media killings from 2001 to 2010.
Most of the killings were executed in the provinces of the Philippines; given that, it was with such great interest that the researcher made a bold attempt to critically analyze the responses of radio broadcasters from AM Radio Stations within Metro Manila and the extent of influence of the radio broadcasters’ state of organization to their responses, wherein both personal and institutional organizations were considered.
The responses of radio broadcasters within Metro Manila were regarded as a form discourse and studied as a text through Critical Discourse Analysis, with the help of Zeus Salazar’s Pantayong Pananaw (“A From-Us-For-Us Perspective”).
Results and findings were representational with the consideration of the distinctions that exist among the respondents. Results showed political undertones surrounding the killings, as well as the existence of power relations.
Furthermore, this research work also paved way in defining the Philippine society and its nationhood – providing a deeper understanding of the past, which can aid in living the present; as it has been reiterated, this was not written about the Filipinos, but for the Filipinos.
