History

1968: The year that saw the birth of the UP-CMC Broadcasting Association.

When Kitchie Benedicto (1968) and Maria Montelibano (1968) founded this organization in the College of Mass Communication four decades ago, it may have been unimaginable that their brainchild will grow up to be the very prestigious organization that it is now.

Gradually, and in some ways reluctantly, casually striving against resistance, Broad Ass has evolved dramatically, changing with time. But it has never been far from the spotlight.

During the tumultuous 70's, at the height of Martial Law, Broad Ass went radical. The Assers staged Dulaang Kapiterya, a series of plays fearlessly satirizing the political conditions of the times. They used the Mass Communication canteen as their theater.

The 80's ushered in the trend of concerts, parties, and fashion shows. Broad Ass was among the pioneers in the fusion of such concepts into one major event.

During the 90's, Broad Ass blazed the trail with creative, funky music videos. It was also during this decade that the Assers hosted the eagerly-awaited dating games during the UP Fair.

Today, reinforced by time, Broad Ass has never been more ardent in its commitment of developing the potential of students in the broadcast media with activities like the Student Media Congress. It aims to enlighten high school students that there are more career options in Mass Communication other than reporting, directing or writing. The seminar makes known that Mass Communication touches fields such as research, advertising, public relations, event management and even marketing.

After 40 glorious years of tradition, Broad Ass continually lives up to the perennial demands of competence and creativity, and tightly embraces the challenges of the times.
