Opinion Formation and Expression about Sex Education among High School Students in Quezon City and Tanauan City, Batangas

ABSTRACT

This dissertation analyzes how high school students in Quezon City and Batangas form and express their opinions on sex education. Through self-administered survey (N=385) and five focus group discussions (from Quezon City and Batangas), researchers found that the opinion presented by the high school students’ media sources of information on sex is weakly associated with their formed opinions on sex education. This was due to their perception of the media as a moderately credible source of information. Instead, their opinions on the issue were observed to have strong associations with the perceived opinions of their primary networks (i.e. families, friends and classmates). Looking closely on their interpersonal communication sources, their opinions were strongly associated with their mothers, best friends and closest classmates. They were also more likely to adopt their perceived majority opinion about the issue. As statistically determined, they are more likely to favor sex education. However, they were also worried of the counter effects of sex education to them as it was viewed as still inappropriate topic for them. Internal factors such as their beliefs, values, experiences, attitudes and sentiments related to sex education seemed to have affected their opinions. Researchers recommended similar studies to administer surveys in the most unbiased way possible. Also, they suggested the initiation of peer-facilitated discussions about sex as adolescents were more open to communicate with their peers.
