UP Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students
History
The University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students, otherwise known as the UP ALCHEMES, is a duly-recognized department-based organization of the UP College of Engineering created to promote academic and leadership excellence and to foster camaraderie and goodwill among Chemical Engineering majors and students of diverse cultural profiles in the University.
Like the alchemists of the medieval age who lived and died believing they can turn base metals into gold, the UP ALCHEMES believes in transforming ordinary engineering students to persons of great minds, talents, character, and leadership skills. As such, the organization continues to provide its members and applicants an environment that encourages and nurtures leadership, teamwork, innovativeness, discipline, ingenuity, integrity and excellence --- an environment where the members and applicants are a family, and the tambayan, a home.
Now on its 7th year of dynamic existence in the College and University, the UP ALCHEMES proves itself bigger and bolder with over a hundred and fifty members collectively participating in events like the Engineering Week and the FOPC, holding successful projects like the Academic League Leader (ALL) game show, the annual sci-tech Research Fair, College Entrance Examination Review Series (CEERS), and Software Application Protocol (S@P), plus a smorgasbord of other activities that test and strengthen the members' unity, ingenuity and headship capability.
The UP ALCHEMES is a cornucopia of interests and talents as well. Home to a lot of singers, dancers, stage performers, trivia buff, academic achievers, musicians, artists, and writers, the league has not only produced effective leaders in the Engineering Student Council (ESC), credible editors in the Engineering Logscript and the Reactor; and consistently contributed topnotchers in board exams, but its members are also known to be formidable contenders in various games, quiz shows, band festivals, and scrabble tournaments. The Alchemists, above all these, maintain a cheerful, approachable, and amiable personality that make them truly unique and exceptional individuals.
Since its establishment on January 13, 1999, the UP ALCHEMES has continually strived to defy new perils to further expand its cause in instilling excellence and camaraderie for the greater advancement of the vision for which it exists. The Alchemists have therefore learned to work in synergy, maximize their potential, and be the best they could be --- devotedly living their motto: "We strive not for perfection, but excellence!"
