Braga, E.B.H. (2011). A Web of Neverending Stories: A descriptive study of online fanfiction based on television storylines, as seen in the fanfiction communities of The L Word, Glee, and Grey’s Anatomy, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
This thesis, entitled A Web of Neverending Stories: A descriptive study of online fanfiction based on television storylines, as seen in the fanfiction communities of The L Word, Glee, and Grey’s Anatomy, is one of the first, if not the first, thesis that tackles the phenomenon of online fanfiction (stories created by fans of a television show based on the show’s characters and storylines)—from its creation to getting feedback. In addition, it is perhaps one of the first studies conducted wherein virtual ethnography will be used as a method. Through virtual ethnography, I will explore three online fanfiction communities whose works are based on the television shows The L Word, Glee, and Grey’s Anatomy.
My exposure and stay in these communities, combined with my personal experiences of being a writer, reader, beta reader, and lurker in a fanfiction community will form part of my a narrative about the phenomenon of online fanfiction in the Philippine setting.
This study aims to study television text, to present a picture of online fan fiction as situated in the Filipino context, and to present a picture of media convergence as it occurs in online fan fiction.
