The UP Psychological Understanding for Growth and Distinction (PUGAD) Society, also known as UP PUGAD Sayk, is a university-based academic organization that recognizes the relevance and importance of psychology in today’s society. Joni Gutierrez, John Dennis Alcaraz, and Chino Perez, who comprised the triumvirate presidency, founded it last year.

It is PUGAD’s mission to harness psychological concepts, insights and skills in analyzing and making recommendations in solving the problems of society. It is the organization’s calling to draw on its understanding of human thinking and behavior as an approach in comprehending social issues. The said understanding is enriched by interacting with an assortment of fields such as public administration, computer science, mass communication, business administration, community development, and education. Then, and only then, can a veritable psychology that is of social relevance grow and obtain distinction as an applied social science.

With the conviction that the phenomenology of a person is of chief consequence in social dynamics, PUGAD can actualize its mission and vision in the milieu of a society that is faced by the challenges of technology and globalization. PUGAD regards itself as an organization of diverse members who accept the challenges that the present and the future pose, via active social involvement and leadership by being academically excellent, socially vigilant, and critical-minded.

PUGAD currently has 50 resident members and several alumni, most of whom psychology majors. It has a sizeable quantity of members from other courses such as business economics, architecture, music, English, metallurgical engineering, and chemical engineering. The organization aims to proliferate the degree program diversity among its members so that it can be a venue for inter-disciplinary insights.

Now, PUGAD is faced with the epic commission of choosing its new set of leaders who will carry on and boost the fervor of realizing the ideology of the organization. The present set of officers has provided the springboard by sponsoring the first psychology quiz show and Alternative Classroom Experience Program (ACEP) symposium on “Hypnosis and Regression” and organizing the PUGAD series, to name a few.

Soon, we elect our new leaders who will reach out the fundamental nature of PUGAD to all who hear its song.

- Joni Gutierrez, President 1, UP PUGAD Sayk
