Ballesteros, L. (2015). Once Upon a Time: A Textual Analysis on the Portrayals of Disney Princesses from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Frozen, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communciation.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the definition of a princess. It specifically looks into the portrayals of Disney princesses from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) to Frozen (2013). The main objective of the study is to describe and analyze the portrayals of each Disney princess. It also seeks to determine the significant changes in the characteristics and ideologies of the most recent wave of Disney princesses (2009-2013). The study wishes to further previous researches on the Disney princesses by including an analysis of the three latest Disney princess movies: Tangled, Brave, and Frozen. Furthermore, the study aims to explain why the emergence of different media platforms allows Disney princess movies to be considered broadcast texts. Feminism will serve as the framework for this study, specifically radical feminism. Using textual analysis and character analysis as methods, the researcher will be viewing all twelve of the original Disney princess movies, as enumerated in the official Disney princess website, excluding sequels and spin-offs. The researcher seeks to examine whether or not the latest princess movies have portrayed more progressive female protagonists. Collection, viewing and preliminary analysis of the Disney princess movies were conducted on December 2014 until February 2015.
