Joel F. Ariate Jr. is University Researcher I of the Third World Studies Center. He is the Managing Editor of the journal Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies. Currently, he has written and done research on the history of the death penalty in the Philippines, state-civil society relations in the context of globalization, global civil society movement on debt relief in the Philippines, religious forces and bossism, and on memories of massacres and mass mobilizations. His previous research involvements include researches that looked at independence social movements, a social history of the Philippine revolution, a history of the Manila City Council, a history of the Manila Medical Society, the status of labor exchange relations among Filipino farmers, narratives of Death March witnesses, an annotation of Ponce and de Veyra's Efemerides Filipinas, and a research on one hundred Filipina pioneers in different fields. He studied history at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
