History

It was around 1993 when a group of Tarlaqueños had an idea of consolidating all the students from Tarlac studying in UP Diliman into one group. This far-fetched idea has materialized in the form of this organization called UP SANDIWA.

It was in August 16, 1993 that UP SANDIWA was recognized as the first and only organization of students hailing from Tarlac, with Sir Adrian Roy Valdez the organization’s first President and now a faculty in Institute of Mathematics, College of Science, UP Diliman. The organization’s logo, a melting pot, best describes the diversity of the members coming from a province with rich mixture of culture but with one spirit, or in Filipino, “Iba-iba man ang Kulura, iisa naman ang Diwa” where the name SANDIWA was born. The organization was awarded an official tambayan in 2004 at the Vinzons’ Hall tambayan complex where the general assemblies and application for new members are taking place. UP Sandiwa, established in August 16, 1993 is the official organization of UP Diliman students from Tarlac. Sandiwa takes etymology from “isang diwa”, with the premise that though we come from a place where diverse cultures and ethnicities have flocked together, we have one identity bound by our shared affinity for our home province, the Melting Pot of Luzon, TARLAC.

UP Sandiwa has been in function for 18 years now, desirous of being in constant service and concern for Tarlac to the best of our abilities. Of great importance are our banner projects that help enhance the competence of the Tarlaqueno youth.

REV-UP is an entrance exam review program aiming to equip Tarlaqueno high school seniors with knowledge and techniques that help increase their chances of passing the entrance exam of their desired university, especially the highly-coveted UP College Admission Test. Pataasandiwa is an annual competition for high school students with contests such as quiz bee, essay writing, poster making and debate. It is a leg competition to Patalasanlahi, the national interhigh school competition handled by the UP Sanlahi Alliance, of which UP Sandiwa is a member.

UP Sandiwa is an organization of UP Diliman Students of Tarlac who, not only share the same ideals, but more importantly use these ideals together in upholding the will to empower the culture of Tarlac, especially its youth. For the past 18 years and in the future, UP Sandiwa, raising the bar of excellence, will continue to live up to its core thrust, “Dahil ang iskolar ng bayan ay unang naglilingkod sa bayang kanyang pinanggalingan.”
