ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the criteria and standards set by the Bayan Mo, I-Patrol Mo (BMPM) and YouScoop news teams in choosing stories submitted by citizen journalists (bayan patrollers and YouScoopers) to be aired in the primetime news programs TV Patrol and 24 Oras, respectively. It also looks at the recurring news values among the stories submitted by the citizen journalists in the online platforms of both networks namely the BMPM Facebook page and the YouScoop website. To determine these news values common among uploaded stories, this study used the content analysis method. The content analysis method was also used to examine the news values among the stories chosen and aired in the primetime news programs. The Agenda-Setting Theory, Double Action Model of Internal News Flow, and the Selective Gatekeeping Theory supported the findings of this study that BMPM and YouScoop are successful in terms of the level of involvement and participation from the public. Citizen journalists play an integral role in terms of contribution to news content in mainstream media. It also supports that the BMPM and YouScoop teams consider news values and audio-visual material qualities as part of their standards and criteria in selecting news stories from citizen journalists.
