UP Cineastes' Studio Logo

The UP Cineastes' Studio is a non-stock, non-profit, duly-recognized, university-wide student organization based at the College of Mass Communication committed to serve the film community and promote film awareness, appreciation and understanding, as well as other forms of artistic expression.

Cineaste (pronounced sin-ni-ast')

A filmic term used to describe someone passionate about film and filmmaking. The term comes from the 20th century French fusion of the words cinematographe and enthusiaste. Today, the modern English term has become cineaste, short for cinema enthusiast.

History

The UP Cineastes' Studio was formed on September 24, 1984. It started out as an organization just for film students of the University of the Philippines Diliman. But later on, it expanded to include students from the College of Home Economics, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Business Administration, and other UP Diliman colleges as well.

Ever since its conception, UP Cineastes' Studio has been upholding the art of filmmaking. The organization is well-known for its continuous film exhibitions in the past years, and now for its tie-ups with the UP Film Institute in holding events such as the UP Film & Video Festival for independent amateur/professional filmmakers, the Black Beret Film Festival for student filmmakers, Russian Film Festival, Fade to Black, the 16mm Film Festival and It’s A Wrap.

The goal of the organization has always been to uphold cinema, particularly local cinema. Also to initiate activities that would elevate the knowledge and craftsmanship in our field of endeavor, and to promote fellowship among film students. And through the years, it can be said that the UP Cineastes' Studio has been steadfast in realizing these goals. In so doing, the organization is now considered an instrumental factor in the continuous promotion of film appreciation and awareness in the UP Diliman community.

Activities

Membership

Every start of the semester, we open up our organization to students from all over the University of the Philippines Diliman to give them the chance to become a member of UP Cineastes’ Studio. Though we are an organization based in the College of Mass Communication, we do not limit our membership to just students of media. We do invite students from different colleges to seize the opportunity to expand their interest in film and filmmaking as well as develop fellowship among fellow film enthusiasts. Last year, we had the privilege of welcoming in 32 new members, with 6 of them coming from colleges such as the College of Fine Arts, College of Architecture and School of Economics. We humbly open our organization once again for membership application this second semester 2011-2012. Please stay tuned in to this page for updates. If you have any inquiries, please contact JM (0917 381 7591) or CJ (0916 5515 136)

Cinemalaya Goes UP

Cinemalaya Goes UP 7 Audience

Bringing the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, or simply, Cinemalaya, to its student audience has been a tradition of our organization for past six consecutive years. In partnership with the University of the Philippines Film Institute, we are proud to be able to bring this back for the seventh year around, continuing the tradition of unrivaled dedication on our advocacy to cultivate and to make known the Filipino independent cinema.

Cineastes’ Month

Established on September 24, 1984, UP Cineastes’ Studio commemorates this with a month long celebration. Throughout the month, we hold numerous activities that will not only be enjoyed by the students, but will also enhance their knowledge and interest in films.

Grand Film Orgy
Film orgies are a well-loved tradition of the org. Every so often, members gather and watch a film, shortly after being screened, a discussion about the film is begun. Through film orgies, members and friends are able to analyze films at a more casual level, During the Grand Film Orgy, we invite alumni of the org to come and participate. This allows fellowship among both students and practitioners, whereby intense learning takes place as insight is given and received from the industry.

D’Original Jologs Quiz Show
Reminiscing has never gotten as crazy and as fun as when done in the D’Original Jologs Quiz Show way. Actors, actresses, name of episode titles, events, anything under the sun of past Philippine entertainment TV and films, JQS is here to make you remember as you play to win a “kabuhayan showcase”.

CinemaOne Originals Campus Tour

Cinema One Originals is the annual prime event of the cable channel, Cinema One. In 2005, the channel ventured into original digital movie productions under this project to showcase the talents and diverse voices of the local independent cinema. Each year, the UP Cineastes’ Studio brings this event to the student audience to carry on the vision of expanding viewership of Philippine cinema as well as recognizing Filipino artistry at work.

Haute Auteur

Conceptualized in 2009, Haute Auteur is a silent video competition hosted by the organization. With themes such as Cinématographe Lumière: Reflections on Early Cinema and Home Is Where the Art Is, Haute Auteur continuously challenges budding filmmakers to go beyond and see how far sheer visuals can take them.

The UP Cineastes' Studio invites everyone interested in films and filmmaking. Haute Auteur encourages all film enthusiasts to seize this opportunity to hone one's talents in filmmaking and expand their reach as a filmmaker. The collection of videos will have a screening in a public venue (e.g. malls) wherein audiences from all walks of life will share a unique film viewing experience. To top it all off, each of the finalist’s films will be scored live by musicians during the awards night. A perfect event for both film and music enthusiasts.
Together with the UP Film Institute, the UP Cineastes' Studio presents this event with pride and confidence in line with the organization's continued support and elevation of filmmaking and the cinema.

Achievements

Members of the UP Cineastes’ Studio have earned great reputation in their fields of filmmaking both locally and internationally.
Some members have participated international talent camps such as the Berlinale Talent Camp in the Berlin International Film Festival.

Year after year, select graduating students of our organization have received prestigious academic awards such as the Best Thesis Awards and the Gloria Feliciano Best Thesis Award. Some of our Cineaste directed and produced films have also been recognized by respected award giving bodies such as the Gawad Urian and the Catholic Mass Media Awards. Still others have been entered into the Cinemalaya Short Film Festival and have been screened at international festivals like the Filipino International Film Festival Los Angeles.

Members continue to bring pride and honor to the organization as their works have been recognized by numerous award-giving bodies.
