Maddened bodies: The Discourse of Madness in Selected Philippine Media Texts is a study that seeks to examine madness and the formation of the discourse of its (re-)presentation within chosen cultural and media texts. Employing a Foucauldian discourse analysis, this study will be focusing on the subjects of madness and the discourse of the (re-)presentation of their bodies wherein particular discourses are formed, (re-)produced and (re-)constructed within the chosen texts.

To be able to analyze the formation of the discourse of the (re-)presentation of madness within selected texts, this study first looked briefly into the discourse of madness within the context of Philippine society through archival research. Articles on and in relation to madness within Philippine journals, magazines, newspapers and governmental reports were analyzed. This study then investigated the formation of the discourse of the (re-)presentation of madness within selected cultural texts, briefly delving into literature then concentrating in the realm of media. The novel Noli Me Tangere (1887), the films Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (1974), Mortal (1975), Nunal sa Tubig (1976), and Himala (1983), and the television programs Pangako Sa ‘Yo (2000) and Rubi (2010) were chosen as its units of analysis.
