DREAMING OF THE FILIPINA CINDERELLA:
ABSTRACT
A FANTASY THEME ANALYSIS OF THE FILIPINO ADAPTATIONS
OF THE TELENOVELAS ROSALINDA AND RUBI

This undergraduate thesis utilizes fantasy theme analysis to examine the Filipino adaptations of two Latin American telenovelas Rosalinda and Rubi. Using the symbolic convergence theory as framework, this study found that both Rosalinda and Rubi fit the fantasy type of the Cinderella Story. The researcher also concluded that Rosalinda was true to form of the classic Cinderella story and cited direct allusions to particular narrative elements within the text. Rubi on the other hand slightly varies from the classic Cinderella story but still holds the narrative elements of the Cinderella story fantasy type. This study asserts that although both telenovelas are taken from a global format, there are a plethora of cultural variations utilized in adaptation that are reflective of the societal norms and collective paradigms of Filipino society.
