The Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering offers three undergraduate programs: B.S. Mining Engineering, B.S. Metallurgical Engineering, and since first semester of AY 1999-2000, B.S. Materials Engineering. It also offers the following graduate programs, an M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, and both M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering. The MMME Department has many laboratory facilities for instruction and research. It has a pilot plant for minerals and materials processing and metal extraction facilities. It has also acquired world-class mineral and materials characterization equipment such as scanning electron microscopes, transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffractometer, thermal analysis equipment, surface morphology apparatus and hardness testers. There are also facilities for extractive metallurgy research and metals forming. Finally, there are many important pieces of equipment that can be used for pioneering local research on IC Device Fabrication such as single crystal growing apparatus, RF magnetron sputtering system, LPCVD set-up, ion-shower doping apparatus, wet and dry etching facilities, spin coating, four-point probe apparatus, ellipsometer, etc.
B.S. Mining Engineering aims to equip the students with the knowledge and special skills on excavation and working of mineral deposits as well as economic analysis of mining projects, the optimization of mining operations and the environmental and human aspects affecting the mining industry. B.S. Metallurgical Engineering aims to provide specialized training for students on the art and science of extracting, refining and adapting metals from minerals and other metal-bearing materials for human use. B.S. Materials Engineering aims to provide specialized training in the characterization, synthesis and application of engineering materials in support of the manpower requirements of a growing engineering materials industry.
The current MMME staff is composed of 12 full-time faculty (one of which is on study leave) headed by its Chairman, Dr. Alberto V. Amorsolo, Jr. Four of the 12 are Ph.D. holders, and the rest have either M.S. degrees or in the final stage of completing their M.S. studies. The laboratories are maintained with the help of three laboratory technicians.
The MMME Department offers to private industry consultancy services, special in-house training in materials science and special topics in metallurgical engineering, assorted testing services involving materials characterization and analysis, pilot plant testing in mineral processing, failure analysis, and mining designs.
