ABSTRACT: This study looks in to the system of representation through music on a text for television. It particularly discusses the representation of the concept of romantic love in the Philippine context through OPM or Original Pilipino Music, as soundtrack of the program “Ang Probinsyano”. Using Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding Model and Thomas Turino’s Percian Semiotic Theory for Music, this study aims to analyze the representation and discourse involved in the signification of love on television. In 2015, the adaptation of the film “Ang Probinsyano” aired on ABS-CBN primetime slot as a teleserye. The representations of romantic love in OPM and teleserye convey themes of sorrow and are usually presented as equivalent to sexual symbolism. Music has a unique political command on discourse to strengthen or break existing symbolisms in a program.
