ABSTRACT

Abejar, A.C. (2019). “I believe:” The Influence of It’s Showtime’s Miss Q & A to Audiences’ Perspective of the LGBTQ+ Community, Unpublished Bachelor’s Thesis. University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

This study explains how It’s Showtime’s Miss Q & A influences its viewers’ perspective of the LGBTQ+ community. Specifically, this study asks: did It’s Showtime’s Miss Q & A influence its viewers’ attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community? And how does It’s Showtime’s Miss Q & A positively and/or negatively affect the members of the LGBTQ+ community itself? Through audience analysis, the researcher did interviews to determine the influence of the said segment.
The researcher studied respondents coming from different generations, specifically: Generation X, millennials, and Generation Z, including those who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, who have watched Miss Q & A. And to interpret the results, the researcher used Petty and Cacioppo’s Elaboration Likelihood Model and Gerbner and Gross’ Cultivation Theory.
The study found out that It’s Showtime’s Miss Q & A has influenced most of the respondents’ perspective of the LGBTQ+ community and helped in expanding the respondents’ knowledge and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community. More importantly, results of the study showed that the segment could also possibly be a way or an instrument for real acceptance, and not just tolerance, of the LGBTQ+ community.
