Abstract

Rodil, B. P. V. (2016). Sa Ngalan ng Ama, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

A young boy comes to grips with what is right and what is wrong as he discovers something about the priest he looks up to. Cyril, a 12 year-old orphan, tries to find out what Father Gerardo’s motives are for his wrongdoings, only to get disillusioned once more. The film shows the issue of morality through two perspectives: the priest and the young child.

Sa Ngalan ng Ama is a critique on our moral consciousness, and what it means, for us, to be moral. The film challenges the boundaries of our ethics, and the thin line between what is good, and what is bad. The film makes use of moral nihilism, ultimately questioning morality as a social construct in order to favour one’s economic and social needs.
