We Are Broad Ass

The UP Broadcasting Association, Broad Ass for short, is a non-stock, not-for-profit student organization and production outfit aiming to produce relevant productions, campaigns and events to inspire and involve the youth in social action.

Since its founding in 1968, Broad Ass has joined the ranks of the more prominent organizations in the university, having produced illustrious names in the industry today such as Loren Legarda, Maryo J. Delos Reyes, Ogie Alcasid, Mariz Umali, Rory Quintos, Carlo Lorenzo, Chico Garcia , and Adrian Ayalin, among many others.

History

Founded in 1968, the UP Broadcasting Association is the brainchild of Kitchie Benedicto and Maria Montelibano in the College of Mass Communication. During the tumultuous 70's, at the height of Martial Law, the Assers, as members of the organization are called, staged Dulaang Kapiterya, a series of plays fearlessly satirizing the political conditions of the times. They used the Mass Communication canteen as their theater.

The 80's ushered in the trend of concerts, parties, and fashion shows. Broad Ass was among the pioneers in the fusion of such concepts into one major event. During the 90's, Broad Ass began producing music videos. It was also during this decade that the Assers hosted the eagerly-awaited dating games during the UP Fair.

In 2010, Broad Ass renewed its branding, and shifted from staging performances to creating videos as a student production house. Aside from training its members in event production, graphic design, finance and marketing, the organization also places emphasis in inculcating members with skills aligned with video production. These include proficiency in all stages of production, from conceptualization and script writing, to color grading and video editing.

Today, Broad Ass continually lives up to the demands of competence and creativity, and tightly embraces its tenets of passion, excellence and glory.

TRACK AND FIELD
An event for the freshies, shiftees and transferees of the College of Mass Communication held in partnership with the CMC Student Council, Track and Field is a seminar that introduces the new members of the college to the various tracks they can pursue as media students. The seminar invites professionals from different fields in the industry, in order for the FSTs to openly ask questions and get a glimpse of their possible future careers.

APPLICATION
UP Broad Ass regularly holds applications twice every academic year, once per semester. The application is one of the shortest in the university, with applicants becoming members in just three weeks. The application trains, tests, and screens applicants, inculcating them with the skills they will be using as members of the organizations, as well as future media practitioners.

BROAD ASS WEEK
To celebrate its many years of meaningful existence, UP Broad Ass organizes a week filled with events for its members, the college, as well as the rest of the university. Past activities held during the week include Full Screen: Grand Pakain, High Def Anniversary Party, P(L)ayback: Teacher's Day, and Outtakes Sportsfest: the Asser Olympics.
