History

In the year 1992, deep inside the old library of Melchor Hall, several Mechanical Engineering students were discussing a simple but profound idea. They believed and were willing to bet that there exists outside the hallowed halls of the University marvelous ideas and amazing people. They continued their discussions in the Narra Residence Hall, formulating plans and forming bonds with one another. Nourished in the womb of Narra Hall, the idea came into fruition in the same year as the Samahang Inhinyero Mekanikal (SIM), a department-based academic organization focused on building and growing a nationwide network of Mechanical Engineering students, with the University as its central node.

Initially SIM was a small and fledgling revolution without an official tambayan to call home. It recruited members and joined competitions here and there and occasionally squatted Narra Hall as a base of operations. But it was nothing more than a spark. A year later SIM became affiliated with the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME), the only state-recognized association for the profession. SIM was renamed Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers University of the Philippines Student Unit to reflect this newfound alliance.

Suddenly the spark became a wildfire.

Today, through the efforts of past members and alumni like, PSME-UPSU lives its mandate of fostering nationwide fellowship among mechanical engineering students. Since 2006 it has continually been able to pull off a chain of successful events that cater to both college and highschool students throughout the country. Recently the organization joined the elite club of engineering organizations that have the capacity to hold events with participants numbering in the thousands. Despite the success the organization continues to march on to bigger and better things. It will continue to fan the flames that started almost a decade ago in the hopes of illuminating the Philippine night sky with the vibrancy of the stars.

Keep PSME-UPSU in Motion.
Move now.
Move fast.

BRAINMESH INTER-HIGH 2011

BrainMEsh Inter-High 2011 Logo

PSME-UPSU kicked off the month long celebration of PSME Month with its youngest event, BrainMEsh High: Inter-High School Math & Physics Quiz Show. Needless to say, the event pits varying schools and their respective teams against each other, every student displaying his/her potential in the field of Math and Physics.

There were three (3) rounds in the event held at the P&G Room of Melchor Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman. The first round was the Preliminary Round where students were to answer individually written examinations prepared beforehand. The top 10 teams that amassed the highest scores gained entry to the Semi-Final Round. Students finally work as a team in this round, answering questions in increasing levels of difficulty in an effort to make it to the Final round.

The Final Round has a similar feel to the Wildcard Round, albeit with exciting difference. Questions were given randomly (only the number of the item is flashed), with no regard to its difficulty (as opposed to the wildcard format) so the students really had to be prepared for whatever the question may be. An added bonus to the round though is that the team who answered the question correctly gets to pick the number for the next question.

The event was participated by 12 schools and 19 teams. Chiang Kai Shek Team 1 won 3rd place, Philippine Science High School Team 1 for 2nd place and Manila Science High School Team 2 for 1st place. Kenneth Co from Philippine Science High School gained the top score in the Mathematics Preliminary Round and Ramon Marquez, also from Philippine Science High School , was the top scorer of the Science Preliminary Round.

The event was highly deemed a success. In addition to testing out the mettle of high school students, one of its aims was to be able to promote the field and industry of mechanical engineering to them and show how attractive a career in the field is.

BRAINMESH INTER-UNIVERSITY 2011

BrainMEsh Inter-University 2011 Logo

BrainMEsh: Inter-University National Mechanical Engineering Quiz Show promotes critical thinking, team work and sportsmanship among others. It also serves as an evaluation of how deep the participants’ knowledge with their chosen field, Mechanical Engineering.

This year BrainMEsh has been bigger and tougher. 53 teams from 20 different schools battle it out to become the new BrainMEsh Inter-University Champion.

The competition is composed of three (3) rounds, the Preliminary phase, the Semi-Final phase and the Final phase. The Preliminary round is composed of a written exam answered individually. The top ten teams that amassed the highest scores from their respective members advance to the semi-final phase. From there, they start working with their teams through three rounds of varying difficulty. The top five teams enter the Final phase.

The Final phase had a similar format to the how the final round of BrainMEsh High. Teams have no idea how difficult the question would be, and the team that got the point in the previous question gets to pick the number of the next one. Questions ranged from anything related to the field of Mechanical Engineering from HVAC to Mechanisms, the students really had to dig deep in their vast knowledge of the field.

The ten teams that advanced to the Semi-Finals were as follows: Batangas State University Team 2, University of Batangas Team 1, Sorsogon State College Team 1, Bicol University Team 1, Camarines Norte State College Team 1, Technological University of the Philippines-Manila Team 1, Southern Luzon State University Team 2, Adamson University Team 1, University of the East-Manila Team 2, Bulacan State University Team 1.

Adamson University Team 1 took the Third Place and University of the East- Manila Team 2 took the Second Place. The new BrainMEsh Inter-University Champion is Bicol University Team 1.

The competition proved once more that Mechanical Engineering in the Philippines is highly competent and worthy of recognition. The students themselves are a testament to what the industry can achieve in the country.

The ten teams that advanced to the semi-finals were as follows: Bataan Peninsula State University (2 teams), Bicol University or BU, Batangas State University (2 teams) or BSU, Adamson University, University of Santo Tomas (2 Teams), UE Manila and TUP Manila. After the semis, the top five teams that made it were BPSU (2 teams), BU and BSU. Eventually BPSU dominated the event, its teams clinching 1st and 3rd place. Bicol University came in 2nd.

The competition drew to a close with the heads of the event giving out a closing remark. The competition proved once more that Mechanical Engineering in the Philippines is highly competent and worthy of recognition. The students themselves are a testament to what the industry can achieve in the country.

ME STUDENTS' CONVERGENCE 2010

ME Students' Convergence 2010

One of the flagship events, ME Students’ Convergence is a seminar series conducted by different speakers which are the best of their fields in the mechanical engineering industry.

This year, PSME-UPSU invited several speakers to share their insight with the students regarding the field and its current stand in society. One company also gave a talk to give the students the opportunity to know more about the company and how it can be beneficial to them.

Opening up on the first day at the Engineering Theater of Melchor Hall was Engr. Jaime T. Lopez. He talked about the role of ME in manufacturing. He was immediately followed by Engr. Chona Evangelista (foundations of competent ME) and CHIYODA Phil Corp. comapny talk.

The following day, the event shifted to PH 400 of Palma Hall, UP Diliman. The first speaker was Engr. Mario G. Montejo. He talked about the roles of mechanical engineers in nation building and its importance. He was followed by Mr. Pablo Yambot who stressed the need for critical skills in ME like effective project managing skills.

The event was concluded by closing remarks from Rolando Menor, the event co-head. It was a well received event, dignified with much praise from well over 300 attendees.

The Convergence proved to be an avenue for students where they can be properly informed of what to expect with their chosen field. With more and more students being out of place of their chosen careers, this event helped aspiring mechanical engineers be furthered empowered with their dream.

PSME CUP 2010

PSME Cup 2010

The PSME Cup showed that mechanical engineers do not completely immerse themselves in studying, but they also have the ability to have fun and show their athleticism. And that’s exactly what they did in the sports festival. With a day ahead boasting of numerous games and accolades to be won, different teams went all out in this fun filled event.

There six sporting events held throughout the day: Basketball, Volleyball, Chess, Badminton, Table Tennis and Tug of War. Six schools participated in the tourney namely, University of the East, University of Santo Tomas, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, New Era University, Adamson University and University of the Philippines.

Basketball was filled with action the whole day, after 3 games of intense brawling in the elimination rounds, three teams advanced: UST, UE, and AdU. AdU looked poised to win the championship after winning all of its games against UST and PUP. But UST rallied for a comeback, defeating PUP twice to get into the finals and eventually defeating AdU with a come from behind win.

Badminton was a display of finesse from the different teams. Virtually no game had a clear winner from the start as all teams were very prepared come game time. The audiences were in the edge of their seats every moment of the game cheering for their school representatives. UST, PUP, and UE won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.

Excitement just as much filled volleyball and the other sports as well. Volleyball was full of drama as UE battled against injuries and almost losing its key players en route to winning the championship. PUP came in second and UST at third. On the other end, a duel of minds unfolded as chess players try to outmaneuver each other in the widely popular game. UE displayed a dominating performance to clinch first place while PUP and NEU grabbed 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Table tennis was full of cheers as a high speed performance took place. After a bunch of sets and rallies, UST once again claimed first place while NEU and PUP followed with 2nd and 3rd respectively. Tug of War was all about physicality late in the afternoon. UE bullied their way to first place. PUP rammed into second place and AdU gained respectable third.

Soon, the event had to close out. The scores were tallied and PUP came in 3rd, UE at 2nd, and UST, last year’s Over-all champion, retained the crown.

PSME BALL 2010: ALUMNI HOMECOMING AND CULMINATION NIGHT

The PSME Ball served as the culminating night of all that transpired in the past month. With PSME Month brimming with success, everyone was in a festive mood for the event.

The night was opened with a doxology from a PSME-UPSU member Philip Miguel to the accompaniment of a violin. It was followed by a speech from one of the founders of the PSME-UPSU, Engr. Rommel Benig. He narrated how PSME-UPSU had started out and how it has written its history up to the present. It was received with much praise and appreciation from the members, applicants, and fellow alumni.

Two other PSME-UPSU alumni, Ace Puno and Ralph Ebora took the stage to narrate how they revived the organization after its dormant years. It was a very light-hearted talk as Sir Ace and Sir Ralph decided to be a little comical about it. Needless to say, the event went far more enjoyable listening to the two joking around and sharing their time when they were still members of the organization.

This was followed by an awarding of all sorts, conferred to members, alumni and applicants who have shown outstanding performance all throughout PSME month. This was immediately followed by the photo shoot where different batches of the organization took the stage to have their photos taken.

Soon, the officers of the PSME-UPSU were also formally inducted into service by Engr. Rheymar Barroga, taking their oath in front of all that was present. It was met with applause from the audience who have truly witnessed the ability of the officers beforehand.

Intermission numbers were cued in all through out the night. Members, alumni, and applicants took turns taking the stage and showing their talent in music. The applicants, in particular, not only had a song number but also wowed the crowd with a dance number, received with much clapping and cheering.

The night was eventually closed formally by the hosts but only ended after much dancing and singing as well as taking pictures at the photo wall as everyone was just so happy at the eventual outcome of all that has happened.
