Villa vs Apartment: The Effect of Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash of 2010's Categorization of Poor and Rich Housemates on the Filipino Teenage Viewers' Perception of their Own Socio-economic Status

This study examined how Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash of 2010’s (PBB TC of 2010) categorization of poor and rich housemates affected the Filipino teenage viewers’ perception of their own socio-economic status. Through this study, the researcher wanted to determine how such reality TV shows affect audience’s perceptions of some aspects in life. Previous researches concerning reality TV shows, self-perception, and socio-economic status were analyzed and evaluated to provide background information of the concepts tackled in this study. Likewise, Encoding-Decoding Communication Model and Social Judgment Theory were used as guides in gathering data and analyzing the results of the study. A textual analysis of selected PBB TC of 2010 episodes was employed to examine the presentation of rich and poor in the program. The program’s chief story editor was also interviewed to find out the socio-economic measurements of PBB TC of 2010. To determine how the categorization of poor and rich housemates affected the Filipino teenage viewers’ perception of their own socio-economic status, focus group discussions were conducted with private and public high school students from Marikina City. The results of the conducted research methods reveal that the Filipino teenage viewers of PBB TC of 2010 distinguished themselves apart from the housemates’ socio-economic status. Although the viewers admitted that some of the housemates’ socio-economic differences were existent in our society, they did not stereotype all rich or poor people as such. However, although the Filipino teenage viewers were not able to identify themselves with any of the socio-economic representations of PBB TC of 2010, they were still able to re-assess and evaluate their own socio-economic status. By examining the major differences of the rich and poor housemates, there was a reinforcement of the viewers’ perception of their families’ perceived socio-economic status.
