Joel F. Ariate Jr. is a university researcher at the [[Third World Studies Center]], College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman with responsibilities for research and publications. He is the managing editor of the journal <i>Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies</i>. Currently, he has written or done research, or both, on the history of the death penalty in the Philippines, state-civil society relations in the context of globalization, global civil society movement on debt relief in the Philippines, religious forces and bossism, the sustainability of Philippine-Japan fair trade relations, and on memories of massacres and mass mobilizations. Of late, he has been working on countering pro-authoritarian propaganda and on a history of the mass transit systems in Metro Manila (with emphasis on its political economy).
