“Hungkag” tells the story of a night in the city, seen through the lives of three different people. The first arc is told in the perspective of a convenience store clerk whose personal problems have made her depressed. When a local gang war suddenly puts her in danger, she is forced to rethink the gravity of her own situation against the darker realities of the world.
Badong, ever since childhood, wants to become an action hero. However, people perceive him as the opposite, solely because of his appearance. This has become a constant source of disappointment for Badong. As a result, he has lost all ambitions for the future. Things start to change however, when he unwittingly becomes a part of a gang of kidnappers. This film will explore the story of the goon.
In a typical Pinoy Action film, the goons are flat characters. Their sole purpose is to be outlets for the hero’s prowess. No backstory is given to establish who they are apart from what they do and what they look like. With this, the film will focus on the physical stereotyping found in Pinoy Action films. It is a commentary of the said genre's convention of characterization that puts primary importance on looks.

The second arc follows a rookie gang member on his first murder assignment. As he trails his target, he is torn between proving himself to the gang and succumbing to the protests of his own conscience. When the time finally comes, he makes the decision that may define his life thereafter.
Furthermore, the filmmaker aims to go beyond physical stereotyping of people to those of situational assessment based on appearance. One core value of the film is the idea of happiness being a choice and being independent of the circumstance. With this, the film seeks to answer the question, “Is a happy ending possible in the confines of prison?”

The third and final arc involves a taxi driver who brings together the lives of the other two strangers. An unexpected holdup brings the driver to desperation and leads him to consider committing his first crime in order to make up for what he lost. An encounter with a passenger helps him decide on which path to take.

The film functions as a way of allegorizing the existentialist dilemma, and also as a way of creating fundamental bases for the meaningfulness of life.  It relates to individuals and the populace, alludes to major societal issues, and questions morality and mortality as a way of recognizing goodness, futility, anxiety and how all these things affect us.

ABSTRACT

Carreon, J. T. (2010). Ang Umaatikabong Buhay ni Badong Aguirre, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis Dissertation, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
