Abstract

This study examines the factors of competence of Filipino sportscasters. These factors were defined as “image and performance” which are components derived from the study of Gotinga and Ignacio about newscasters in 2005. Image is defined as the sportscaster’s on screen persona, which pertain to physical appearance and on-screen reputation. Physical appearance is further defined as neatness, youthfulness, and good looks. On-screen reputation refers to credibility, humility, rapport with staff, compassion and personality. Performance refers to a sportscaster’s on-air delivery and sports knowledge. To gain an objective understanding of a competent Filipino sportscaster, data was gathered from three perspectives – the networks, the sportscasters, and the sports audience. The responses from the three units of analysis were subdivided to the roles of a sportscaster – as a sports analyst, a sports anchor, and a courtside reporter. The findings showed that the overarching characteristic of competence as a sportscaster is sports knowledge. The ability to communicate effectively, to ad lib, to be flexible, to be witty, to be trustworthy, to be credible, to have rapport, to be humble and to be neat are characteristics that then are valued for competence. Youthfulness and good looks are bonuses for panelists but requisites for courtside reporters.
