ABSTRACT
This thesis is a purely qualitative study which reflects the pervasiveness of visual media in our lives. Specifically, this study aimed to examine the visual representations of Former-President Corazon “Cory” Aquino and President Gloria “Gloria” Macapagal-Arroyo in visual media, both in newspapers and magazine. Guided by the semiotic theory, photographs of the presidents gathered from The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin and Time magazine were visual analyzed. The Encoding/Decoding theory was used to find out how selected Filipinos perceived the images, colors, signs, symbols and gestures associated with Cory and Gloria. While the Feminist Political Theory was used as a lens in looking into the political practices of Cory and Gloria based on their perceived leadership style, characteristics and advocacies. The emergence of visual culture was explored thru the verification of the selected Filipinos’ perceived representations of Cory and Gloria vis-a-vis their visual media representations. Findings revealed that Cory was positively represented in the visual media while Gloria was both positively and negatively represented. Visual media representations showed not only the physical aspects of Cory and Gloria but also their expressions and characteristics. It was proven that visual media could elicit different interpretations from different spectators.
