'''Hungkag''' ABSTRACT Manatad, C .Y. (2010). Hungkag. Unpublished Student Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication. “Hungkag” tells the story of a night in the city, seen through the lives of three different people. The first arc is told in the perspective of a convenience store clerk whose personal problems have made her depressed. When a local gang war suddenly puts her in danger, she is forced to rethink the gravity of her own situation against the darker realities of the world. The second arc follows a rookie gang member on his first murder assignment. As he trails his target, he is torn between proving himself to the gang and succumbing to the protests of his own conscience. When the time finally comes, he makes the decision that may define his life thereafter. The third and final arc involves a taxi driver who brings together the lives of the other two strangers. An unexpected holdup brings the driver to desperation and leads him to consider committing his first crime in order to make up for what he lost. An encounter with a passenger helps him decide on which path to take. The film functions as a way of allegorizing the existentialist dilemma, and also as a way of creating fundamental bases for the meaningfulness of life. It relates to individuals and the populace, alludes to major societal issues, and questions morality and mortality as a way of recognizing goodness, futility, anxiety and how all these things affect us.
