GREEN OR GRIM: A STUDY ON ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM IN THE PHILIPPINES
IN THE PAST DECADE THROUGH A COMPARATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS
OF THE PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER AND THE PHILIPPINE STAR

This study describes the overall state of Philippine environmental journalism through an investigation of trends, themes, frames and emphasis of environment stories in The Philippine Daily Inquirer and The Philippine Star in the past decade (2003-2012). Philippine environment journalism has been getting more attention in recent years; however many stories are centered on sensationalism and disasters. A perceived lack of interest on the part of readers lead editors to filter environment stories based on body count, source credibility and overall appeal to the general public. This situation, coupled with newsroom pressures can force journalists, who are constantly rushing to beat deadlines, to leave several important topics unreported and issues uninvestigated. The public is then left with incomplete information needed to make sound decisions about environmental issues. Without an informed and enlightened public, there is less pressure generated on policymakers which may prevent them from passing laws and regulations which would be beneficial for the environment and consequently for the society as well.
