The study examines the objectification of young celebrities in contemporary media and their reception by audiences. Specifically, it examines the reception of millennial-aged male Filipinos of James Reid as an objectified male in contemporary ads, movies, and TV shows.
The study uses images of an objectified James Reid as determined by Martha Nussbaum’s criteria for objectification. Millennial-aged male Filipinos are then surveyed on their self-image in relation to exposure to such images through focus group discussions (FGDs), as this was a method used in a similar study by Elliott and Elliot in 2005.
The study uses the results of the FGDs to examine the relationship of the images of the objectified male body and the male audiences’ gaze placed upon them. The male gaze is often examined as directed at the female body. This study looks at what happens when the male gaze (both gay and straight) is directed at the male body, with regards to the holder of the gaze.
