Determining Solutions to Water Resources Needs and Problems thru Water Resource Technology: Module 1: Hydrology


The world’s water resources are facing the ever-growing threats and challenges posed by population increase, rapid urbanization and adverse land-use shifts, pollution of waterways and aquifers, weather uncertainties, climate change and the increasing competition among various users of water. The important tasks that are assigned to engineers, scientists, planners and decision makers for the provision of water infrastructure and services are multifarious , including the assessment of the water resources in the hydrologic cycle, the quantification of the water-related needs and corresponding threats or risks, and the identification and formulation of appropriate responses to these threats and needs. To be able to do these tasks, the professionals have to be equipped with the fundamentals of hydrology and hydraulics.

These subjects are prerequisites to the understanding of the hydrological and hydraulic processes and phenomena, as well as in developing design tools to determine solutions to water resources needs and problems.


Module 1: Hydrology (March 2, 3, 4; 8AM to 5PM) Course Objectives: 1. To acquire an understanding of the main scientific theories and principles governing hydrologic processes 2. Be able to quantify major hydrologic components and apply key concepts and techniques to relevant engineering analytical and design problems

Course Outline 1. Introduction: Weather and Hydrologic Cycle (4 h lecture) 2. Rainfall and Evaporation Measurement and Estimations (3 h lecture, 1 h workshop) 3. Stream flow Measurements; Rainfall Run-off Relationships (3 h lecture, 1 h workshop) 4. Hydrograph Analysis and Synthesis; Flood Routing (3 h lecture, 1 h workshop) 5. Flood and Low flow Frequency Analysis (3 h lecture, 1 h workshop)


Scientists, engineers and technologists interested and/or involved in water resources analysis, infrastructure design, evaluation and planning


Lectures, demonstrations, computer-aided calculations, simulations and laboratory exercises will be used in the training course.
