Guys, we should probably move "UP Memos" from the Main Page to Community Portal. The Main Page needs a better layout. Perhaps "iskWiki! Quick Stats" and "Did you know that" can be place side-by-side in a 2-column box. That would make both matters on iskWiki! stand out. I am, however, handicapped when it comes to layout. Yes, I already removed the logo of the "welcome" something on top. I was just wondering if we could incorporate or insert a welcome message on the topmost of the main page, which is in the form of an image, something like that. Because if we will have a welcome message on the whole article itself, it will make the whole page very long, which is not user-friendly (too long hehehe). Yes, I think that is too redundant, because there is a presence of iskwiki logo on the left hand box and another iskwiki logo on the welcome image. The '''University of the Philippines Haring Ibon''' ('''UP Haring Ibon''') was established on November 27, 1987 as a youth chapter of the Haribon Foundation in the University of the Philippines Diliman. Since then, it has continuously exerted efforts to raise awareness with regards to environmmental conservation.

For more than 20 years now, the organization has been a dominant figure within the university in addressing environmental issues and concerns.

== History ==
In 1987, several UP students who joined the Haribon Foundation Summer Camp at Mt. Makiling decided to establish a group that would be the Haribon Foundation extension in UP. From the core group of around a dozen UP students, only three original core group members remained. This shaky start was basically due to the lack of dedication of most of the members, which caused the resignation of two assisting Mother Chapter officers, Ed Coronel and Dr. Celso Roque. Mortimer Cordero was then appointed President, along with Vida Sayson as Vice President, Jenny Wilson as Secretary, Bernadette San Juan as MemCom Chair and Marqueza Lepana as CS-SC Coordinator. Vida Sayson and Jenny Wilson soon left to pursue their own careers. This left Mac Lepana and Bernadette San Juan to take over their positions respectively.

Many problems were encountered during the humble beginnings of the UP Haribon, this included lack of funding, membership drive (an organization population of 200 was expected by 1988), and tambayan acquisition and renovation. These problems were solved with the help of the Mother Chapter (Haribon Foundation), mostly with the financial matters, and with the leadership of Mortimer Cordero, Bernadette San Juan and Marqueza Lepana.

After years of being the youth chapter of the Haribon Foundation, UP Haring Ibon (known then as UP Haribon for the conservation of Natural Resources) faced problems as no financial support was coming from the foundation for the organization's projects. Because of this, UP Haribon started to work as an independent organization, pursuing projects without the financial support from its Mother Chapter. In July 2003, Haribon Foundation requested the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to hold UP Haribon's recognition as an organization because of the use of the foundation's name. The Executive Committee members during that time, along with the guidance of alumni members and advice from other Haribon youth chapters, decided to change the name to UP Haring Ibon.

'''Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino''' is the resident ethnic music and dance ensemble of the [[UP College of Arts and Letters|College of Arts and Letters]], [[UP Diliman]]. Popularly known by the acronym KONTRA-GAPI, the group was founded by Art Studies Professor Pedro "Edru" Reyes Abraham Jr. to draw inspiration from Asian an indigenous roots of our rich and diverse cultures.

The aim of the group is to present the wealth and depth of Asia within every person through the vehicle of performance in the repertoire of all-original music, dance, mime and song.

== History ==
KONTRA-GAPI had its beginnings when in 1989, Prof. Pedro R. Abraham Jr. of the [[Department of Arts Studies]] of the [[UP College of Arts and Letters|College of Arts and Letters]] in the University of the Philippines (U.P.) Diliman was asked to conceive a score for "A Dream Play" by August Strindberg. Produced in Filipino translation by Dulaang U.P., the resident repertory theater company, the director had only one guideline: that the music may be distinctly Filipino and Asian. Throughout the run, the play merited consistently excellent reviews by artists, critics, academics, students and regular play goers alike with the music receiving special mention for its running exotic appeal. This encouraged the then ad-hoc band to transform itself into an independent performing organization. Soon after, they were invited by the Heritage Arts Center in Quezon City for their very first concert performance.

In February 1993 KONTRA-GAPI was appointed resident gamelan or ethnic music and dance ensemble by the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

For their significant trend-setting and visionary contribution, the group was awarded in February 1996 the U.P. Diliman Chancellor's signal plaque for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts (performing Arts Category).

== Gamelan ==

While Africa has massed polyrhythmic drums, Europe has the symphony orchestra, and the United States has the jazz and rock bands, the Gamelan is the quintessential orchestra of South East Asia.

The word "gamelan" derives from the Javanese "gamel" which means to strike or to hammer. Typically, a gamelan consists of percussion instruments such as gongs, and drums of graduated sizes, wood and metal xylophones of varied timbre, flutes and whistles, assorted bamboo wooden and metal percussion and voices for singing and for expressive vocables.

KONTRA-GAPI uses ideophones such as kulintang, gangsa, tongatong and kalutang; chordophones like the hegalong, kulibet, gitgit, and kuritang; aerophones such as the diwdiw-as, esmi, tonggali, and suling; and membranophones like the debakan, solibaw and Cordillera drums of varying sizes and shapes. The human body itself through applause, stomping, chest pounding, clicking and other means turns into a producer of myriad sounds. There are, too, quaint pieces like the kuribaw or mouth harp and the tambi or zither-drum in a reserve of over a thousand instruments.

The collection is more than sufficient for the ensemble, which performs with as many as fifty and as few as five players. Most engagements require fifteen to twenty for a full program.

== Tours ==
From April to November 1997, KONTRA-GAPI ventured on its first international concert tour of Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland in Europe, three provinces of Canada and seven of the United States. The group returned to the U.S. for more shows and the group was invited by embassies in Laos and Vietnam to celebrate the Philippine National Day.

From April to October 2000 KONTRA-GAPI went to its fourth international tour of North America and Canada carrying the title "Ambassador of Goodwill for the Culture and the Arts of the University of the Philippines for the year 2000".
