ABSTRACT

It is proper and ethical for media practitioners to properly identify themselves when gathering information and in the delivery of news to the public. Identification is provided mainly by the press ID, which makes it easier for the press to fulfill its news gathering function. However, the identification card has served purposes aside from what it was originally intended to be. How the members of the media have been using the press ID for purposes other than identification has been an area few studies have delved upon. This is one of the few studies that delved into the issue of the pressing identity. It focused on the opinions of officials from major government units and police officials in Quezon City to determine how the government sector perceive the media’s use of press ID. Through surveys and focus interviews, the study found out that the people from the government agree with the media’s use of press identification card while a notable number refused to give opinion on the matter. Perception was revealed to be affected by socio-demographic factors and media contact.
This thesis studied pre-campaign political television advertisements of 2010 presidential and vice-presidential candidates. The researchers focused on how these advertisements are conceptualized and how it affects the youth.

The researchers conducted four Focus Group Discussions among registered youths aged 18 – 25 and asked them about their perception of the image, airing, and the television commercials of Manny Villar, Benigno Aquino III, Gilbert Toedoro, Richard Gordon, Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Mar Roxas, Loren Legarda and Jejomar Binay. The researchers found that political advertisements are effective in providing recall for the candidates among their audiences through frequent airing. But FGDs showed that frequency of airing does not necessarily translate to votes. Informants agreed that they had seen Manny Villar’s TV ad the most but majority of them favored Gilbert Teodoro for president.
The researchers also interviewed experts from the fields of advertising, academe, and politics for their analysis and views regarding the airing of these advertisements. The researchers found that it is quite impossible for candidates to address specific issues and problems of the country because of the time constraints in airing the advertisements. The researchers concluded that political advertisements do produce recall for the audience. But good and credible content has a better probability of influencing voting decision than frequency of airing.

ABSTRACT

Labor migration is one of the major pressing issues faced by the Philippine
society today. More and more Filipinos are leaving the country to work abroad for
greener pastures. This escalating phenomenon has resulted in economic benefits and
social costs. As labor migration brings economic prosperity to the country, social and
filial relationships are on the brink of collapse.

While millions of Filipinos work overseas either temporarily or permanently, their
left-behind children directly carry the burden of living with absentee parents. Through
advanced communication technologies such as the latest Internet communication features
and tools, long-distance relationships among families thankfully are maintained. Simply
put, constant communication remains possible despite the geographical separation.

This study delves on how OFWs used the Internet to parent and influence self
concept of left-behind adolescent children. The researcher investigated how OFW parents
used various Internet communication features in enacting parenting practices, and how
such acts influenced the left-behind children’s development of academic, social,
emotional, and physical self concepts.

The study’s framework combined Bowen’s Family Systems Theory, Jesse Delia’s
Constructivism Theory, Daft and Lengel’s Media Richness Theory, Bowlby’s
Attachment Theory, and Altman and Taylor’s Social Penetration Theory.

The case study was used as the primary method of research. This was
supplemented by other methods such as online surveys, focus interviews, and focus group
discussions. Pertinent findings revealed that OFW parents utilized the Internet primarily
to monitor, guide, admonish, and advise their left-behind children. They also used long-
distance mediated communication to express emotions as a compensation for their
absence. However, for OFW parents, particularly among OFW fathers, Internet-based
parenting was only complementary to the personal parenting of the left-behind
parent/guardian. On the one hand, OFW mothers considered Internet communication as a
primary form of parenting. When it came to the development of self concept, findings
also showed that children with OFW mothers and those with OFW mothers and fathers
were negatively influenced by the physical separation due to infrequent Internet-based
communication. However, frequent Internet-based parenting positively influenced their
academic, social, physical, and emotional self concepts.

As a whole, factors affecting long-distance relationship and development of self
concept were parenting style, level of attachment, stability of relationship prior to
separation, frequency of communication, manner of parenting, actual physical separation
and frequency of Internet-based parenting. In short, online parenting worked along with
the above in influencing the self concept of adolescent left-behind children.

This thesis investigated on the current status of orphan diseases in the Philippines. Orphan disease or rare disease is a type of disease which occurs in a small percentage of a certain population. Accounting for very few individuals, the public, the government and the pharmaceutical industry give very little attention to these diseases and to the patients. An in-depth examination of medical statistics, government funding, legislation, previous studies, private endowment, and attitudes and responses of the different sectors of the society such as the health sector, government, orphan disease patients and their families showed that orphan diseases are among the least priority of the government and the health sector as these sectors have to attend to more immediate and pressing concerns. This in turn endangers the lives of orphan disease patients. The study showed that proper information dissemination could help in soliciting help for the patients. The study was conducted using Agenda-setting, Elaboration Likelihood theories and Force Field analysis as the framework for investigation. This study came up with recommendations for possible legislation to address the problems brought about by orphan diseases.

ABSTRACT

YouTube, as a user-generated medium, is changing today’s media landscape. It allows the audience a greater degree of control over consuming media content, enabling users to produce and upload their own content and patronize content uploaded by other users. As guided by the Integrated Model of Audience Choice, Expectancy-Value Theory and Activity Theory and using Uses-and-Gratifications approach as frame, this study looks at how college students consume and produce YouTube videos. Motivations for and evaluation of consuming and producing YouTube videos were examined and connected to the fulfillment of such motivations to analyze their media satisfaction. Focus Interviews and Self-Administered Surveys were used to collect and gather data for the study. The findings reveal that college students access YouTube usually at night, from 6:00 pm to 11:59 pm. As with traditional media, entertainment and information remain the primary purposes for consuming content. Being a user-generated medium, it is viewed as a modern day television and cinema where, as active audiences, they are given the opportunity to make conscious choices based on their motivations and personal attributes. Moreover, YouTube’s offer of enabling users to produce their own content is seen as a revolution to the mass communication process in that it gives users additional power over media content.

ABSTRACT

The Internet has the potential to facilitate the process of job-seeking, but this has been an under-researched dimension of Internet use in the Philippines. As such, this thesis explores job-seekers’ perceptions and use of the Internet for job-seeking, guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, McQuail’s new media theory, and a cost-benefit analysis of job-search. A survey was used to obtain information on young, middle-class members of the labor force’s general use of the Internet and their acceptance and usage of the Internet for job-seeking. Two-hundred respondents from Metro Manila were selected using criterion sampling. Results showed that respondents used Internet-based methods of searching for job openings more than traditional methods. Specifically, older respondents used Internet-based methods most frequently. In applying for work and following-up applications, Internet-based methods and traditional methods were used by the respondents almost to the same extent. Considering that all the respondents had access to the Internet, performance expectancy was the best predictor of intention to use the Internet for job-seeking and actual usage. In particular, the Internet was perceived as information-rich and accessible, hence its continued use in job-seeking despite uncertainties about privacy and reliability.

OF THREE DADDIES, ONE MOMMY, AND BOYS OVER FLOWERS: AN ANALYSIS OF THE FILIPINO CULTURAL CONTENT OF KOREANOVELAS

At the beginning of the decade, Filipino audiences were introduced to Koreanovelas. They instantly fell in love with these South Korean drama series, which were translated and dubbed in Filipino, and aired on local networks. Today, the trend of Koreanovelas garnering high ratings on Philippine TV shows no signs of stopping. This study analyzes how specific Filipino cultural elements are inculcated into Koreanovelas through the adaptation process, thereby contributing to their sustained popularity. Using an integrated framework of Semiotics, Narrative Paradigm Theory and Stuart Hall’s Representation, this study conducted discourse analysis on selected episodes of two Koreanovelas, 3 Dads with 1 Mommy and Boys Over Flowers. It also utilized focus interviews with three Koreanovela writer-translators to supplement the data gathered. The study found that the efficient adaptation of Filipino culture by the foreign texts was accomplished through: (1) proficient use of the local language, (2) the portrayal of Filipino values and beliefs, and (3) the conformity to local television standards. By rewriting Korean dramas, translators effectively assimilate the world of the Koreanovela into the Philippine context. Thus, these foreign series become appealing and relatable to Filipino audiences. The study includes a short video presentation showing the proliferation of Koreanovelas as a phenomenon on Philippine TV, providing an impetus for this study.

ABSTRACT

Since the birth of television in the Philippines, variety shows have been a mainstay in the noontime slot. This study looked at how noontime variety shows represented Filipino culture from 1965-1986. This timeframe illustrates the transition from pre-martial Law to Martial Law to post-martial Law. Specifically, this study sought to discover the context, content, and ideologies of four noontime variety shows. These shows were Stop Look and Listen, 12 O’ Clock High, Ariel Con Tina, and Lunch Date. The research framework was an integration of four theories from the semiotic approach. These theories are John Fiske’s Television Culture, Stuart Hall’s Theory of Representation, Michel Foucault’s Historical Discourse, and Roland Barthes’ Semiotics. All of these theories adapt the constructionist approach and are used in cultural studies. A qualitative design was applied to the research. Particularly, in-depth interviewing was the primary data gathering method employed in this study, while the archiving technique served as a secondary method. Results revealed that although there were major changes that took place in society, the transition from pre-Martial Law to Martial Law variety shows did not reveal any escalated changes in the treatment of the program flow, music, fashion, studio, nor in upholding values and traditions. In contrast, post-Martial Law variety shows displayed a more distinct transformation in both the content and ideologies that were inculcated.
'''Abstract'''<br />
This study examines the problem on how bloggers make use of blog advertisements to gratify their needs in blogging. The objectives of the research include describing the relationship of the bloggers and the advertisers, and explaining the processes involved in this phenomenon. Moreover, this study tackles the different uses and needs of the bloggers which are met or otherwise by putting up blog advertisements. Online focus interviews of twelve professional bloggers serve as the main method in gathering data. The Uses and Gratifications Approach was used to guide the researcher throughout the conduct and analysis of the study. Results show that the blog advertisements are essentially fulfilling the blogger’s needs by gratifying and supporting the four main media-person typologies which are the diversion, personal identity, personal relationships and surveillance. As for the social and psychological needs of the bloggers, each category has satisfied the blogger’s life with the use of blog advertisements. The five social and psychological needs are the cognitive needs, affective needs, personal integrative needs, social integrative needs and tension release needs. Through the results of the study, the researcher concludes that a majority of the blogger respondents make use of the blog advertisements as a primary source of income. After trying out blogging as a hobby or as an extra activity, blogging becomes their full time occupation because of the good monetary compensation. And from this benefit, all other aspects of the blogger’s life have been gratified as previously discussed. However, some bloggers still maintain their nine-to-five jobs and consider blogging as a secondary source of income. Since blog advertising is one of the popular phenomena today, the researcher recommends that future studies be done on blog advertising in comparison with the traditional medium of advertising on print, radio and television. Likewise, methods like focus group discussions and expert interviews are also suggested by the researchers to make a more in-depth study.

ABSTRACT

This thesis entitled O.D. is a 15-minute narrative film shot in HD video. The story revolves around the character of Cocoy, an undergraduate student who has been dismissed from his college. Because of shame and guilt, he finds it hard to confess to his parents about his academic status so he chooses to not tell them about it, keeping his parents’ expectation that he is doing well in school and is graduating from college soon. This struggle almost leads him to self-destruction. This thesis film delves into how individuals, college students in particular, deal with failure. In several cases, students cope with failure in a negative manner such as denial, concealment, and ignorance of the failure, and pretensions. These kinds of behaviors towards failure, most of the time, lead to self-destruction. This suggests that proper failure management is an important factor for an individual to move on from a failure. Moreover, this thesis asserts that a posiive approach to failure leads to a positive result. This thesis is supported by theories such as Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory on self-construction, Freud’s theory on ego-defense mechanism, and Weiner’s attribution theory.
'''Abstract'''<br />
This thesis reconstructs the story of animé in the Philippines from the time of its arrival until to its current situation in the Philippine television landscape, with focus given on the Animé Boom period of 1999 to 2001. Using the framework of John Mittell’s Genre Theory, the creation of the programming of animé shows in the Philippines is determined in relation to both macro (political-economic conditions) and micro (television network’s programming strategy) factors that occurred in the Philippines during the period of study. To recreate the animé’s narrative, this paper analyzes newspaper and magazine articles published from 1999 to 2007. The study also uses a focus interview of a GMA 7 program specialist, in addition to analyses of ratings of animé shows from 1998 to 2003. The findings show that the programming of animé genre in the country is indeed a result of both macro and micro factors. Macro in the sense that it was Martial Law of 1970s that caused animés to be banned on television; and then it was politics once again that revived the audience’s interest on this genre through the House Bill 6622. On the other hand, there is the micro factor of the network’s programming strategies, wherein both the advertisers and the audience affected the fate of animés.

The unique story created by animé in the Philippine setting proves Mittell’s arguments that genres should be defined by not only considering television industry practices but the historical situation as well. And with that, this paper presents the boom of the animé genre to find its position in the country’s broadcasting historical landscape.

SINE’SKWE…WALA NA?: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON THE DECLINE OF CHILDREN’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ON FREE TELEVISION

ABSTRACT

This thesis is a study on the current condition of children’s programming on free television, focusing on the genre of children’s educational programs. This study involved evaluating the process of government regulation on children’s educational programs and its impact on free television’s children’s programming. Likewise, this thesis analyzed how free television conducts self-regulation in their children’s programming.

The researcher employed the interview method in gathering data. She conducted interviews among program managers and writers of current and past children’s programs aired on GMA 7 and ABS-CBN 2. Representatives from government regulatory boards were also interviewed. The interviewees were from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board and the National Council for Children’s Television. The third set of interviewees came from the non-government organizations involved in monitoring and supporting quality children’s programs. These are the Anak TV Foundation and Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas.

The study revealed that although the television industry has regulatory boards mandated by the government to monitor and support children’s programming, free TV networks still depend on their self-regulation to produce quality children’s programs.

Government regulation involves monitoring and sanctioning TV programs. This process also includes conducting dialogues with the networks’ writers to suggest the inclusion of substantial information for children viewers. On the other hand, self-regulation of free TV networks involve rigorous editing of scripts, having less discussions on sex and violence- related concepts and hiring of education consultants and child experts to guide them with the programs’ content.

Media critics argued that children’s programming is not being maximized by any of the two institutions - government and free TV networks. Lastly, this study revealed that all sectors agreed that there is indeed a decline in children’s educational programming, and this is primarily due to the lack of interest and funding from the advertisers.

This study conferred that the industry has not reached the full potential of TV as a powerful tool for educating children because of economic reasons and lack of sufficient communication between the government and the TV networks. The regulatory board mandated to address children’s programming does not yet have the formal rules to be implemented on free TV’s children’s programming. The government agency also does not have the appropriate budget to support children’s programming. Free TV, on the other hand, is still a business. The life of their programs still depend on advertisers. This is a reality despite the TV networks’ social responsibility to deliver quality children’s programs to its viewers.

Finally this study recommends that studies be made regarding the feasibility of joint projects among TV networks, the government, and non-government organizations for the industry of children’s programming. This research also suggests that other studies focus on analyzing the issue through the perspective of the advertisers. Lastly, this study proposes that a research be made on the views of other important sectors of society, such as teachers, child experts, NGOs, the academe, and parents who are likewise concerned with the benefits of educational programming on children viewers.
Cabigon, Chad Angelic Duque. Ricochet. University of the Philippines Diliman. College of Mass Communication, 2010. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis.<br /><br />

Ricochet tells the story of a man who contemplates on a murder he committed. His plan to restore peace and to avenge his misfortune backfires when he kills an innocent man instead of a scoundrel. It narrates the story of a man dealing with his inner purgatory and the psychological death of his humanity. <br /><br />

The film is about the repercussions of man’s thoughts and actions in accordance to the people around him. We may have the best intentions but we may not have the proper solutions. When chaos arises we could possibly create more tribulations than resolutions, and with that we struggle to remain our sanity intact while trying to cover our sins. <br /><br />
The film also highlights the technical capabilities of the medium in order to expressively communicate with its audience. It tries to be self-reflexive on the use of film as a medium to share new meanings not just those that were readily presented in the film as it exemplified concepts of Linda Hutcheon’s theory on Metafiction (Hutcheon 2)

This film is about the generation and degeneration of a person’s memories. Memories can be reincarnated again in various ways. In this film, memories are given a second life in the form of still pictures. The story takes place mainly in the mind of a woman, who gathers so much experiences throughout her life. In the end, she will get old and become forgetful, but will be able to preserve her memories by the pictures she has taken. Her time may pass and her human mind may weaken; but thanks to her photographs, her memories will stay.

It is stated in Baudrillard’s Theory of Hyperreality, “the moment modernity exploded upon us is the moment of liberation in every sphere; and the only thing we can do after liberation has been achieved is to simulate that liberation.” In this film, the almost endless production of memories has brought liberation to the person who owns these memories. It becomes a repetitive cycle, and somewhat senseless. As the person who owns the memories get old and eventually die, the endless cycle of repetition is put to an end. As a redeeming factor, it is not all put to an end. The real meaning of those memories still survives, as photographs; it’s essence simulated by those who see it.
'''HOW PRODUCT PLACEMENT AFFECTS NEWS CONTENT IN ABSCBN-2’S TV PATROL WORLD'''

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the nature and extent of the influence of covert advertising on the content of ABS-CBN-2’s TV Patrol World.
Product placement and other forms of covert advertising has become a normal occurrence in Philippine cinema, and lately, Philippine Free TV as well. Alarmingly, news and current affairs programs have not been spared from this development.
20 episodes of TV Patrol World were analyzed, using the concepts and parameters set by the study framework based on the Political Economy of Media and Gatekeeping. Both of these theories propose that the media is a powerful tool by those with economic power to put forward their own interests.
Key figures in the Sales and Production department of TV Patrol World were interviewed to shed light on the occurrence of product placements in the program. The respondents described the process of “segment buy”, where advertisers sponsor a segment which will be integrated into the show.
The analysis of the gathered data revealed that product placements were a regular occurrence in TV Patrol World. The frequency of brand placements and sponsored segments increased significantly during the holiday season, and waned after the celebrations.
The data also showed that while conceptualized segments are created primarily for the advertisers, these still follow the news trends seen in other parts of the program.
The study’s findings demonstrate the need for more stringent measures against the integration of advertising into the news, both from KBP as the monitoring body, and from ABS-CBN’s management.
For future studies, the researcher suggests the addition of concepts and methods from audience studies and media literacy. The researcher also recommends the use of the Propaganda model and Agenda Setting theory as a basis for future studies.
