University of the Philippines – Diliman College of Mass Communication

This thesis examines the music video genre. Specifically, it seeks to examine the narrative and structure present in music videos of South Korean Pop boy group BTS and has the main objective of exploring the narrative and structure of these Korean music videos to determine if they follow current music video conventions or break them. This sample of eleven music videos is selected as the music used in the music videos belong to an album series that the boy group released in the span of a year and four months.

The study utilizes Rapahelle Moine’s discussion on genre, Boris Eikhenbaum’s
formal method, and Andrew Goodwin’s music video analysis on narrative and structure. The history and the evolution of the music video is also tackled using the studies of Simon Frith, Lawrence Grossberg, and Paul Temporal, taking into consideration how Music Television (MTV) changed the landscape of music and music television
consumption.

BTS’s music videos adhere to the conventions of television music videos while trying to keep up while being uploaded online. BTS introduces a new type of storytelling that gives each music video its own narrative, and links it to other music videos in order to create an overarching narrative.

Event Videography is a kind of video production specialized in capturing any event onto video by a videographer. Its most prominent form is the Same Day Edit or SDE. Due to digital post-production and powerful editing equipment and software, editing event videos can now be done in several hours instead of several weeks.

This study asserts that SDEs are a new form of video production which needs to be defined and has a unique gatekeeping process involved in its production. Through employing the theories of Phenomenology, Gatekeeping, and Literary Dynamics in Formalism and gathering data using key informant interviews, participant observation, and textual analysis, the researcher found that the SDE is a wedding film which tells the love story of two people using their wedding day highlights. Recurring imagery such as the bride walking down the aisle and wedding rings can be expected to be seen in most SDEs.

The SDE can also be defined as a form of video production created purely in one day that has its unique stages of production and process of gatekeeping. Among all gatekeepers and levels of gatekeeping involved, the Same Day Editor is the most influential, and is considered to be the ultimate gatekeeper.
