From 2006-early 2011 I was experimenting with lots of styles (House, Trance, Techno, Electronica, Proggressive House, and Dubstep). But now I exclusively produce Glitchy electronica with lots of clicks and cuts.
Praying For Estella is a post-hardcore/metal band from Baguio City formed in the middle of 2009. The band members were brought together through SET-UP, a music organization they are members of in the University Of The Philippines, Baguio. As of this date, 3 of the band's members study in UP Diliman while the bassist studies in UP Baguio. PFE's songs often talk about love, heart-break, failed relationships, class struggle, the oppression of the working and peasant class, and many more advocacies. PFE tries to create songs with significance to the masses and would want to connect personal trials to national issues.

When individual faculty members of the Ateneo supported the Reproductive Health Bill in 2008, they also drew attention to the fissures within Catholic thought on Sexual Ethics. Drawing strongly from Catholic social teaching, these dissenters brought much-needed focus on women’s sexual and reproductive rights in the public discussion. The much recent “Jesuit Talking Points on the RH Bill” purports an openness to dialogue and while it may be tempting to assume that the dissenting individual professors and these Jesuit theologians are cut from the same (Ignatian) cloth, it is worth noting substantive differences between these positions.

Who is invited to this dialogue? What are the Jesuits willing to exchange ideas on? And what is it exactly that Jesuits (and the Catholic Church) are willing to compromise on? This essay analyzes the “Jesuit Talking Points” in the historical context of Catholic Reformation, official Catholic teaching on sex as well as the more recent phenomenon of Catholic dissent in the Philippines.

By refusing to recognize women as individuals with rights and insisting on the authority of religious hierarchies to speak for their members – while using the terminology of freedom and liberty – the Jesuit call for dialogue courts not only criticism of sexism but the equally deadly “sin” of spinning.
Now on its second year, this is a series of 12 weekly lectures for the S.Y. 2010-2011. The first seven were conducted during the first semester, and the remaining lectures are scheduled to be held during the second semester. It is intended to introduce to the students the fundamental problems of legal interpretation/ hermeneutics/ semiotics by using contemporary events as heuristics. It is also hoped that this will spark more intellectual debate within the legal academia and suggest areas of further inquiry for its audience.

Each lecture will feature a faculty member who will be making an oral presentation for at most thirty minutes. The rest of the time will be devoted to a moderated open discussion.

ABSTRACT

This project explores the kind of interaction that occurs between a deaf and a hearing person who both belong to one family. People with disabilities are often questioned about their capability to fulfill their role in a family, especially if they are the parents. There are already a lot of films and documentaries that tell stories of deaf people but most of them only showed the issues faced by deaf people during their childhood years up to their adolescent years (e.g. disability awareness, language acquisition, socialization and etc.). But deaf people’s lives do not stop when they passed the adolescent stage because adulthood and parenthood are bigger issues that they have to face. Hence, this film aims to depict this particular stage of deaf people’s lives through the characters of the deaf mother and her hearing son. Also, this project analyzes the fact that miscommunication, which is the biggest factor that creates conflict between the two characters in the film, can only be resolved if the two characters decide to change their perspectives and they both exert efforts to understand one another as suggested by the process of reframing which is included in the Interactional View theory of Paul Watzlawick.
'''HOW PRODUCT PLACEMENT AFFECTS NEWS CONTENT IN ABSCBN-2’S TV PATROL WORLD'''

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the nature and extent of the influence of covert advertising on the content of ABS-CBN-2’s TV Patrol World.
Product placement and other forms of covert advertising has become a normal occurrence in Philippine cinema, and lately, Philippine Free TV as well. Alarmingly, news and current affairs programs have not been spared from this development.
20 episodes of TV Patrol World were analyzed, using the concepts and parameters set by the study framework based on the Political Economy of Media and Gatekeeping. Both of these theories propose that the media is a powerful tool by those with economic power to put forward their own interests.
Key figures in the Sales and Production department of TV Patrol World were interviewed to shed light on the occurrence of product placements in the program. The respondents described the process of “segment buy”, where advertisers sponsor a segment which will be integrated into the show.
The analysis of the gathered data revealed that product placements were a regular occurrence in TV Patrol World. The frequency of brand placements and sponsored segments increased significantly during the holiday season, and waned after the celebrations.
The data also showed that while conceptualized segments are created primarily for the advertisers, these still follow the news trends seen in other parts of the program.
The study’s findings demonstrate the need for more stringent measures against the integration of advertising into the news, both from KBP as the monitoring body, and from ABS-CBN’s management.
For future studies, the researcher suggests the addition of concepts and methods from audience studies and media literacy. The researcher also recommends the use of the Propaganda model and Agenda Setting theory as a basis for future studies.

ABSTRACT

This film explores the relationship of a mother and daughter who suffered grief due to the father’s death. It conveys how they were able to overcome their grief and also mend the indifference that eventually occurred between them.

Acceptance is the hardest challenge for the mother, but with the daughter’s continuous efforts of reaching out to her, she was able to accept her life without her husband and recognize the efforts made by her child.

The author desires to question the existence of stability, belongingness, and security in a family and to pin point the notion posed on family roles and obligations.

Family as the major source of security and belongingness and its vitality to an individual’s needs are two of the messages the filmmaker wants to connect in this film.

The film is an attempt to bring about a realization, that we, as part of a certain family structure have roles and obligations to be carried out for the development of each member.

It uses semiotics and relational dialectics as the theories to convey how the lansungan became a representation of a broken relationship that got mended through time and efforts.

Abstract

Oral tradition is an anthology of verbal utterance of past human experiences expressed sophisticatedly in many ways. Anchored on the Theory of Narratology, Structuration Theory, and Theory of Media Ecology, this study explores the oral tradition of kwentong bayan in Bobon, Northern Samar relative to the interplay of individuals and societal structures. This study also probes into the possible changes instigated by media to the said tradition.

In line with its qualitative approach, participant observation and unstructured focused interviews with 18 natives and migrant Bobonanons were conducted.

Findings reveal that religious tales are the most popular kwentong bayan among the 25 folktales collected in the area. Along with these folktales are stories with touch of magic, Juan Posong tales, and stories about creatures of lower mythologies. It was found out that aside from its entertainment and spiritual function, kwentong bayan serves as an edifying tool, an instrument for reconstructing the past, and a sanction to established beliefs and attitudes. Unfortunately, the oral tradition of kwentong bayan in Bobon is already waning. Several factors are pointed out as reasons for its decline, namely, the parents, generation gap, formal education, modernization, and media. Interestingly, however, informants see the potential of media to revive this vanishing tradition.

'''Abstract'''

Healthcare, such as medicine use, is essential to individuals but many do not have the capacity to obtain proper healthcare, especially in the country. In view of these concerns, the study aimed to determine and explore the concept of health of urban and rural residents and the factors that influence it as well as how social environment shape decisions to rely on branded, generic or herbal medicines.

Five communication theories were integrated, namely, Health Belief Model, Standpoint Theory, Theory of Reasoned Action, Expectancy-Value Theory, and Information-Processing Theory. Utilizing these theories, the researchers examined the interconnection of personal factors (concept of health and knowledge on existing laws related to medicines), intervening factors (social environment and perceived differences and barriers on medicine types) and healthcare behaviour (processing of health information, healthcare and reliance on particular medicine types).

This study consisted of 200 randomly-selected households which were equally divided between urban (cities within Metro Manila) and rural areas (province of Catanduanes). As a method to probe and complement survey responses, six (6) case studies were conducted. These case studies which were composed of six families were divided into three categories: branded medicine-reliant family, generic medicine-reliant family and herbal medicine-reliant family. For each category, there were two case studies (1 urban; 1 rural).

In addition, an illness remedy report was conducted in the middle of the FGD (case studies) wherein the families were given a sheet of paper with different enumerated illnesses. They were then asked to talk among themselves as a family on the forms of healthcare they do in curing all given illness. Follow up questions were asked at the end.

Results revealed that personal factors are shaped by social environment especially family and doctors. However, urban and rural residents were found active communicators as shown by how they seek, screen, compare, store, and analyze own opinions with others. As they processed health information, perceived barriers such as cost and effectiveness were found influential in affecting healthcare decisions. In effect, healthcare decisions are then finally formed which leads to an individual reliance to branded medicines, generic medicines or herbal medicines.

Abstract
This thesis explores the role of watchers in providing support to their mental patients as influenced by the external support they themselves received. The family is perceived as the main provider of social support to mental patients as they are responsible for taking care of them. However, mental illness confers a stigma, which makes recovery more difficult for the patients and their family. Filipino families seek strength from their interpersonal relationships as evident in their practices of pakikisama, pagdadamayan, and pakikipagkapwa. To explore the nature of social support received by the watchers and how it influences the care that they provide for their mental patients, interviews and observation were done inside the Acute Crisis Intervention Section (ACIS) of the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH). Primary data were collected from interviews with watchers, hospital staffs, and visitors. Watchers also need affection, inclusion, and control. These are provided by their external networks (e.g., relatives, friends, hospital staffs) through various forms of supports, which make them more capable of providing care to their mental patients.

Abstract

This thesis focused on how selected Filipinos perceive feminine beauty as well as its formation and the external and internal factors that influence it. Also, it focused on what feminine beauty is and the distinction of the perception of feminine beauty across gender.

Review of related literature revealed that mass media and advertising equate beauty to thinness. This ideal of female beauty has a negative impact on females resulting to eating disorders and disturbance in their appearances. Furthermore, women want to improve their appearances by purchasing beauty products or resort to cosmetic surgery. It was found out too that Western ideals of beauty propagate through local television and magazine advertisements. Thus, media influences women’s ideals of beauty. Also, most studies focused on certain products or campaigns when exploring about the females’ perception on beauty such as skin-whitener commercials and other TV advertisements. Moreover, most studies explored the females’ point of view when it comes to beauty, not exploring the perception across gender.

This study adapted Firmeza’s study framework (1995) and used Perception Model, Filipino Value System, Constructivism, Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, Persuasion theory, Reinforcement theory and Agenda Setting theory. Concepts from each of the theories were borrowed in order to come up with an integrated conceptual framework.

The researcher conducted a series of focus interviews and focus group discussions that primarily explored into how the perception of beauty was formed and the factors that influenced its formation. The focus group discussions and focus interviews gave an in-depth inquiry as to what factors contributed to the meaning of beauty among selected Filipinos. Both methods employed a purposeful sampling.

Findings of the study revealed that in forming perceptions of feminine beauty, a lot of factors are to be considered. External sources of information such as family, friends, partners, social groups, society & culture, work, advertisements and mass media were found out to be influential. Also, it was found out that individuals have their own standard of feminine beauty based on their upbringing and maturity. Moreover, the informants primarily associated feminine beauty with outer beauty or physical attractiveness because they shared that it is first seen by people. However, inner beauty was considered essential most especially in interacting with other people more so, in keeping relationships with others. Inner beauty was said to be longer lasting compared to outer beauty. Furthermore, there is a need for one to be beautiful for self fulfillment and for others’ acceptance. In addition, it was found out in this study that perceptions of feminine beauty vary across gender.

This study will be of great use for women who have distorted perceptions of beauty and low self esteem. It will also help the audience to be more critical of what mass media present as beautiful and consider themselves as beautiful too. In addition, this study will contribute to the learning of different fields such as mass communication, arts, psychology and anthropology.
