''The Separation of the Church and State Media: An Inquiry into the Political Economy of the Catholic Church and Philippine Government Television''

The Separation of Church and the State Media, as the title suggests, is a descriptive study of National Broadcasting Network’s religious programming and how it relates to the Catholic Church, through the lens of political economy and public sphere.

This thesis studies the political economic relationship between NBN and the Catholic Church. From that point, three major areas of study will be explored – programming, policies, and production process. Through this study, I aim to trace the power relationships and interdependence between the two institutions.

These power relationships pave the way to a symbiotic mutualism between the Catholic Church and the National Broadcasting Network. The Catholic producer-block timers use NBN as a venue for airing their programs, and thus extend the reach of the physical Church’s teachings. The government station benefits from it financially.

This thesis will also look at ethical considerations in religious programming, and will examine NBN’s religious programming. On the other hand, this thesis indirectly addresses the issues of the commodification of the sanctity of the Catholic Church and its teachings. Lastly, one significant point here is that this thesis tries to look at how the political economy between the Catholic Church and the State television affects the Philippine public sphere.

Key informant interviews and document analysis were used as the main methods in research. Findings show that Church and NBN are, in many ways, politically and economically related and involved in each other’s operations.
At a time where almost everything in Philippine television is saturated with
adaptations of foreign television series, everything is also taking the Filipino children’s
attention away from educational shows that are supposed to provide them holistic growth.

However, the children’s shows should catch not only the children’s attention, but also the
advertisers’ interest which rely on ratings when giving them additional budget. Therefore,
the show needs to create content that will accomplish all these. Otherwise, efforts for the
show will go to waste, and the production staff who also need wages, will suffer.

Through textual analysis, and with Althusser’s Ideological State Apparatus
(1969), I studied how GMA 7’s Sabadabadog represents the Filipino through the
dominant values it imparted to the children. Using Albert Bandura’s (1989) Social
Cognitive theory, I analyzed which acceptable behaviours were reinforced by the show’s
hosts, and what social norms were possibly passed on to the audience.

Si Bantay o Si Sabadabadog is an exploratory paper that aims to analyse the
ideologies promoted in Philippine free television’s children’s educational programs.
Children’s shows have a lot of potential, and this paper aims to encourage media
practitioners to constantly evaluate, and to make the program content even better than it
already is.

''The Separation of the Church and State Media: An Inquiry into the Political Economy of the Catholic Church and Philippine Government Television''

Manahan, RJT. (2012). The Separation of Church and State Media. Unpublished undergraduate thesis, Department of Broadcast Communication, College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines – Diliman.

This thesis will also look on ethical considerations in religious programming, and will examine NBN’s programming as a whole. On the other hand, this thesis indirectly addresses the issues of the commodification of the sanctity of the Catholic Church and its teachings. Lastly, one significant point here is that this thesis tries to look on how the political economy between the Catholic Church and the State television affects the Philippine public sphere.

Key informant interviews and document analysis were used as the main methods in research. Findings show that Church and NBN are, in many ways, politically and economically related and involved in each other’s operations.
This thesis shall explore, expose, and provoke our Catholic sensibilities in the light of its relation to the television.

Manahan, RJT. (2012). The Separation of Church and State Media. Unpublished undergraduate thesis, Department of Broadcast Communication, College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines – Diliman.

The Separation of Church and the State Media is a descriptive study of National Broadcasting Network’s religious programming and how it relates to the Catholic Church, through the lens of political economy and public sphere.
