Vox Populi, Vox Media: An Exploratory Study on the Gatekeeping Process of Mainstream Television News Networks for Online User-Generated Content,Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.<br /> <br /> ABSTRACT: This thesis explored the gatekeeping process that newsroom decision-makers have adopted with the rise of audience participation of social media users in news gathering. During the time this thesis was written, mainstream television newsrooms pull content from social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to be packaged as news reports, celebrity stories, or netizen reactions. This study explores the gatekeeping process of four mainstream television networks in the Philippines: ABS-CBN, CNN Philippines, GMA, and TV5. Data was gathered through 1) in-depth interviews with executive producers, news head, and digital producers of each of the four networks, and 2) monitoring of newscasts of TV Patrol, News Night, 24 Oras, and Aksyon. It was found that traditional gatekeeping processes were kept alive but additional news values have been created by news networks. Meanwhile, the monitoring of newscasts provided concrete evidence to the growing participation of the online public in the shaping of news. This study revealed that 1) newsrooms consider social media as a source of news, 2) the online public can influence newsmakers, and 3) studies on social media can adopt a sociological framework.
