Oliver, Mark Lester R. (2018) Paggamit ng Fantasy Themes sa Paglikha ng Produksyong 2D animation ukol sa Tuberkulosis, Unpublished Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication

In this production and research, I created three 2D animation videos that discuss three fantasy themes on Tuberculosis—TB is Airborne, TB is not Forever and TB doesn’t only Attack the Lungs. I used Ernest Bormann’s Symbolic Convergence Theory and Stuart Hall’s Encoding, Decoding to design the content of each video, and measure audience reception. A Focus Group Discussion was conducted among seven women residing in Dela Costa Homes V Brgy. Burgos in Rodriguez, Rizal to gauge the effectiveness of each video in explaining the disease.
Based on my findings, symbolic convergence emerged when the respondents’ perception on TB was countered, new information was discussed, and the content added value to them. Meanwhile, symbolic convergence does not arise when the content is vague, inconsistent, and misinterpreted by the respondents. I posit that the respondents aren’t passive receivers of messages but co-creators as they take part in the reproduction of meaning.
