Young and Moral: A Content Analysis on the Coverage of Reproductive Health and Family Planning by Religious Magazine Publications for Teenagers and High School Students

In a recent survey conducted by Pulse-Asia Philippines, the majority of Filipinos are in favor of the Reproductive Health Bill, which serves as an ironic contrast since a large percentage of the population are also predominantly Roman Catholics. The Catholic religion is strongly opposed to the Reproductive Health Bill, especially since the documents of Humanae Vitae in 1978 and Evangelium Vitae were made.

This dissertation explores how religious magazines provide significant and contemporary literature on the Reproductive Health Bill, family planning methods and sex education to their teenagers and high school readers. Given that the publishing entities that produces the magazines and books connote that the content is set in a wholesome and Christian mindset, it simulates different scenarios and perspectives that can arguably be crucial to the development and enlightenment of their adolescent readers. Reaching out for a clue through a thorough study of the articles, brochure pull-outs, books and other published material that tackles the subject each company produces is achieved by cataloging content listing and then comparing on the bases of prevalent issues, quality and emphasis for the selected written content. As accordingly, new formats and approaches will be considered and presented that may hopefully advance the promulgation of knowledge and wisdom on values of conception, from the religious publishers to their young readers.

''Whimsical Disclosure: Evaluating the Ombudsman's Policies on Access to Information in the Years 2010-2011''

This undergraduate thesis evaluates the policies on access to information enforced by the Office of the Ombudsman, the constitutional anti-graft body of the Philippines, based on the experience of students and journalists. It uses data gathered from students of investigative journalism in the University of the Philippines Diliman and interviews from reporters who covered the Office of the Ombudsman. By identifying the motives behind withholding information or making it public, this study also examines how a government agency that deals with complaints filed against public officials can use its discretion over such information either in favor of the public or to its detriment. This research argues that selective transparency in the Office of the Ombudsman provides opportunities for corruption—by allowing Ombudsman officials to use their power to forward political or economic interests and by perpetuating a culture of impunity in corruption. This study also validates the need for a freedom of information law, which corrects the Office of the Ombudsman’s arbitrary policies on access to information.

Title: When East Meets West on the Hardcourt Sidelines: A Comparative Discourse Analysis on the Play-by-Play Commentary Between ABC and Solar TV's Coverage of the 2010 NBA Finals and its Effect on Filipino Audiences' Reception

Abstract: This study compares the play-by-play commentary discourse on the 2010 NBA Finals by ABC’s Mike Breen, Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy and Solar TV’s Alex Compton and Mico Halili. It discusses how the similarities and differences in the sports commentary affect Filipino audiences’ reception of the game. The extensive popularity of NBA in the Philippines, to the extent that local cable channels like Solar TV send Filipino delegates to the NBA Finals to cover the games live, has prompted the researcher to embark on the subject matter.

This study uses discourse analysis to extract meaningful information in the two commentaries, supplemented by a focus group discussion. Sports commentaries play a crucial role in the audiences’ interpretation of the game as sports commentators also exert their own meaning-making process in the narrative. Given that NBA is a foreign sporting league, this research analyzes how cultural differences affect the way Filipino commentators construct meaning around the narrative.

As an alternative system to lower particulate matter in the exhaust of older diesel engine is proposed that will first seek to increase ultra-fine diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the exhaust using coconut fiber (coir) matrix and subsequently separate those agglomerates quantitatively from the exhaust. This study is focusing on the problem of agglomeration of ultrafine PM using a fiber matrix. It is intended as a feasibility study for the use of coir matrix as means to induce significant particle coagulation to sizes well above 500 mm. This includes the design of the coconut matrix and its housing after muffler. Using a comprehensive review of aerosol dynamics, the effect of deposition and consequently agglomeration is thoroughly assessed, incorporating two models on particle deposition on fiber matrices, which not only provide theoretical support for the overall concept to agglomerate ultrafine PM, but also valuable insight for the design and layout of the fiber matrix. Two agglomerating devices were designed and fabricated with approximate filter volume of 3,000 cc and 13, 000 cc. Each device has 200 - 400 layers of coconut fiber. recorded temperature inside the device and pressure drop varies from 44 - 190˚C and 4-30 mbar, respectively, depending on the engine running time (hour), load (kW), and engine speed (RPM). A glass filter was used to capture PM 2.5 out of the exhaust using a dilution channel. PM removal at average load of 0.885 kW is 47.7% at engine speed of 900 RPM (in 0.5-hr) while 6.9% removal at actual load of 7.65 kW operating at 1100 RPM (in 2-hr).

Whereas a final assessment is still to be made, an outline for subsequent work is given to provide a solution for everyday use of the agglomerating device in public transport in the Philippines.
What will happen if an aberration to the dominant ideology in society suddenly emerges and confuses the audiences' reading of a media text?

This study aims to answer this questions by analyzing the reactions of Pentecostal church leaders towards Vice Ganda's expressions of himself in Showtime. Using Stuart hall's Encoding Decoding Theory as a framework, the researcher studied the hegemonic ideologies in media and the church that served as the dominant codes in the communicative process where media is the encoder of messages and the Pentecostal pastors are the decoders. Vice Ganda, on the other hand, emerges as the aberration tot he dominant Patriarch ideology in society.

The researcher's findings would show how Vice Ganda entertained, impressed and at the same time offended and threatened the Pentecostal pastors as he broke the Filipino' stereotypes of gays on TV.

A numerical analysis for the determination of the ultimate strength of reinforced concrete columns of arbitrary cross-sections subjected to biaxial bending is presented. In satisfying equilibrium of forces and bending moments at a cross-section, the magnitude and location of the stress block normal to the member cross-section and the location of the neutral axis must be determined. In locating the neutral axis, a procedure akin to the initial stress method in finite element analysis of non-linear continua is adopted. This iterative procedure calculates the non-linear response to loading through a series of iterations, assuming elastic response in each step. In determining the magnitude and location of the stress block, parametric mapping is used. Parametric mapping of non-dimensionalized local coordinates and Cartesian coordinates which define the square and the rectangular hexahedronal domain and two and three-dimensional isoparametric element with curved boundaries, respectively, was adopted. In this technique, evaluation of the transformed integral equations was conveniently carried out by the Gaussian integration scheme.

ABSTRACT

There is a growing need for risk communication and risk management in the tourism industry especially in a country where natural hazards often occur and terrorism and political instability are present. Hence, this study explores risk communication in the context of Philippine tourism. Using focus interviews as the primary research method, data on risk management and risk communication strategies were obtained from tourism stakeholders such as the Department of Tourism, local government units, local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils, travel agencies, and hotels. Moreover, this study delved into tourists’ risk perception, behavior, and attitude. A total of 17 tourists from three tourist destinations were interviewed for this study.

Findings of the study reveal that inadequate risk management and risk communication efforts were employed by the tourism stakeholders despite their claim that they are credible sources of risk information and are confident with the believability of the risk information that they provide. The study also shows that tourists’ risk perception do not affect their travel decision and perceived image of a travel destination. Furthermore, tourists obtain information on travel risks from interpersonal and media channels. This study can be used by tourism stakeholders in order for them to understand the current state of risk communication in the field of tourism.

Theoretical Elaborations on the Capacity of Humor in Media to Directly Influence Society

ABSTRACT

This study provides various theoretical explanations on the capacity of humor in
the television situational comedy and political satire Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata,
to directly produce an intended effect in society. Guided by theoretical discussions on
humor, ridicule, and satire, a character analysis is drawn from the first five episodes of
the first season of the television program. The character analysis is used as a background
to debunk the assumption that media can produce an intended direct effect in society. The
social systems theory by Niklas Luhmann explains why the mass media as a system
cannot produce an intended effect to the political system or other systems in society.
Another objective of this study is to provide archival and historical data through the
encoding and compilation of the scripts of the first five episodes of the first season of the
television program. This study is not prescriptive. It does not offer a way of how satirical
media texts should be produced in order to effect change in the current order of things nor
does it offer a standard of what accounts for an ‘effective’ satire. The study offers
additional perspectives on viewing and processing broadcast texts on political satire and
humor.

The traveling salesperson problem (TSP) is a classical combinatorial optimization problem which finds a route for a salesperson required to visit a set of locations exactly once and return to the starting location after the strip. Its application has been widely recognized in various industries which ranges from delivery routing, bus scheduling, planning hotel inspection trips to multiple-job sequencing and newspaper printing. The common objective in TSP is minimizing the total travel costs which may be monetary-based, distance-based, time-based, whichever is more practical and applicable. The TSP with a single salesperson is a special case of the general multiple traveling salespersons problem (MTSP). In MTSP, the sum of the travel costs incurred by each salesperson is being optimized. This paper introduces the Tour Construction and Improvement Method, an MTSP solution technique that is carried out in two phases: Phase 1 or the Tour Construction Method (TCM) finds an initial feasible solution (IFS) by finding arcs with cheapest costs Phase 2 or the Tour Improvement Method (TIM) attempts to improve this IFS by a series of arc deletions and replacements. The effectiveness and robustness of TCIM was tested using both actual industry data and a statistically sound randomly generated data which proved applicability of the model to real world problems. From the industry data used, the heuristic produced solutions that are within 4.08% to13.51% from optimal in a fraction of a second, that is 1/26.05 to 1/31, 183.55 of ILIP runtime. TCIM also performed very well in other test data used. It was able to produce solutions within 0.00% to 23.21% from the optimal solution with a large improvement in runtime over ILIP. TCIM was able to produce the optimal solution in small problem size.
TCIM was proven a cost-effective and satisfactory decision making tool for the multiple travelling salesperson problem.
The Arduous Search for Solace with Paintbrush in Hand tackles contemporary themes such as alienation, dreams and self-actualization, and tries to paint a picture of the disillusioned artist in society.

In the present capitalist-driven society, the “real” world, also known as the corporate world, is where people compete with each other to try to make ends meet. The corporate world becomes the battleground for survival, where reaching the top of the corporate ladder is tantamount to success. Along with that, we, through different forms of media, are fed with images that serve as standards for beauty, sexuality, and success. Those who veer away from these standards and ideals are looked down upon. As a result, they isolate themselves and try to find their own niche somewhere else. Majority of these deviant members of society are artists.

Non-conformists are propelled to seek escape from what reality offers them. In the film, dreams serve as a venue for escapism, allowing the dreamer, Vincent, to be absorbed with the possibilities unachieved in the waking world. The quest for maximizing one’s potential, achieving success, peace of mind and happiness is a common goal shared by every member of society. It is doubly arduous for the socially rejected, but never impossible.

ABSTRACT

The study aims to explore how the narrative, themes, character presentation and relationships present in the reality TV show Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown challenges its Filipino audiences’ perception of their cultural identity based on the concept of kapwa.
Enriquez’ Sikolohiyang Pilipino, Hall’s Cultural Studies and Genre Theory were used as framework for the study. Enriquez’ Sikolohiyang Pilipino was used to provide basis for the existing cultural identity of the Filipinos, which, through Cultural Studies and Genre Theory, the study tries to argue, is being challenged by the reality show Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown. To fulfill its objectives, the researcher performed textual analysis of the complete reality show season, focusing on the themes, conflicts, character presentation of contestants, interactions and relationships of the contestants within the tribe. Meanwhile, audience perception of their cultural identity was determined through five focus interviews conducted among selected respondents.

The researcher found out that the concept of kapwa is indeed deeply-rooted in the identity and consciousness of the respondents. The main thrust, themes, character presentation and construction of reality in the show Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown challenged the cultural concept of kapwa in the broadcast text; however this did not transcend into the audiences’ consciousness. The audience tolerated the adjustments in the meaning of kapwa within the context of the reality show, but their original notion of it, as applied in their real lives, has been maintained. Therefore, the researcher concludes that the reality show Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown did challenge the concept of kapwa in the broadcast text, but did not influence the Filipino audiences’ cultural identity.

For future studies, the researcher recommends using Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding theory in order to more intricately describe the communication process of embedding the meanings in the text, relaying it to the audience and interpreting these meanings, and Cultivation Theory to find out if longer exposure to the television program would influence audience’s perception of reality. Also, an institutional perspective would give a better understanding of how the production process of the reality show affects construction of meaning and reality. The study calls for more responsibility on the part of media institutions and practitioners regarding the television shows they produce and/or franchise due to the immense influences such shows may have on their audience, and also aims to develop awareness and critical thinking among the audience when viewing such programs.

ABSTRACT

This research aims to present a discourse on the identity that emigrants describe of their homeland through the videos of a Filipino-American comedienne, in the context of her portrayal of her Filipino family.

Youtube, being one of the most or probably even the most popular video sharing website in the world, has made a certain Christine Gambito famous because of her channel called HappySlip. She coined HappySlip, which she also regards as her alias, from her Filipino mother’s mispronunciation of “half slip.” HappySlip is a one-woman production that humorously presents a series of videos mostly about ethnic habits of a Filipino family as seen through the eyes and mind of an American. Gambito is the one who plays the many characters of different members of her family – her mother, her father, her aunt, her cousin and her grandmother whom she calls lola.

This research mainly revolves around the discourse of how Filipino-Americans describe the Filipino community and will use the videos of HappySlip as a case study. It seeks to identify the relationship between her orientation as a Filipino who was born and raised in America and the way by which she represents her Filipino family.

In exploring this relationship, a descriptive textual analysis will be conducted to identify the indicators of ethnicity within the stories in her videos that may speak of being Filipino but avoid the instance of being essentialist.

The Reel Life of Policemen: Mass-Mediated Fictional Portrayals of Policemen in Filipino Prime Time Television Dramas and Movies

Abstract

This study explored mass-mediated portrayals of policemen in Filipino prime time
television dramas, namely: ''May Bukas Pa, Noah,'' and ''Pilyang Kerubin'' and movies, ''Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, Misstaken,'' and ''You Got Me'' through content analysis.
The researcher then conducted focus interviews with directors, producers and
scriptwriters of Filipino prime time television dramas and movies who are the experts in
these media. The researcher used the Dominant Ideology theory of Marx and the
Dramatism theory of Burke as the theoretical guide.
Data from the content analysis revealed that characterizations of policemen are
composed of both positive and negative portrayals. The positive portrayals emerged with
the highest frequencies. Devotion to duty, being presentable in terms of the proper use of
the police uniform and being physically fit are the top portrayals of policemen.
Directors, producers and scriptwriters also portrayed police characters positively
from their past works. Experts revealed that the profession of the character does not
dictate whether they would be portrayed positively or negatively. A positive or a
negative portrayal would matter if the character is a lead or a supporting character. As
such, there are no stereotypes of the police character in Filipino prime time television
dramas and movies as what the PNP suggests. On the other hand, if such portrayals of
police officers are to be made, experts make sure that these are what exist in reality.
The study examines the role of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and questioning (LGBTQ) community, social networking site Downelink.com both as a representation of the shared beliefs of selected gays in Metro Manila and as a representation that shapes these shared beliefs. As a social networking site, Downelink.com assumes the role of two agencies of socialization—peer groups and mass media.
More importantly, James Carey’s ritual view of communication was used as a lens to understand how these cultural patterns contribute in the creation, maintenance, and transformation of their culture while J.Neil Garcia’s Gay theory was used as a guide to identify which aspects of this culture had been repaired by their participation in the website. The data gathered presented various views of homosexuality existing in online community that supported the argument that their cultural landscape had already been transformed. Furthermore, the study provided insights about Philippine gay culture that intends to break the dichotomy of overt/covert that was posed by Garcia more than a decade ago.

ABSTRACT

Advertising is that powerful machinery used by capitalists to orient people towards consumerism. It is their major ideological tool by which they solidify their domination in society. As an industry, it forms an integral part of our culture and uses technological manipulation to engage consumers.

This study serves as a critique of advertising’s hegemonic workings specifically focusing on BBDO Guerrero’s Lola Techie Campaign for Bayan Telecommunication’s Bayan DSL as the campaign happened on the internet with the agency utilizing social media tools to engage consumers.

Basically, this critique tackles the hegemonic workings of advertising through social media, the media people use for social interactions based on the uses of web technology by evaluating the social media tools the agency used and by analyzing four Lola Techie advertisements found in YouTube and reading it as a discursive text.

Guided by the theory of semiotics, ideology and hegemony, this study presents that through social media advertising, people are interpellated and constituted as subjects who should respond to the dominant class’ commercial interests. In the Lola Techie campaign, people are interpellated to respond to advertising messages grounded on the ideology of consumerism permitting hegemony to happen.

This study aims to find out how the Filipino university students accept Koreanovelas. Through a one-shot survey of research, the study tried to find out the demographic characteristics of the respondents, their level of exposure to the program, their preferences for watching Korean dramas, and their acceptance of the characteristics and other aspects of Koreanovelas. The respondents consisted of 200 college students representing five different universities in Metro Manila.

Survey results revealed that majority of the university students watched Koreanovelas regularly for entertainment purposes. The main appeals of the Korean dramas are the following: unique and exciting plot, fast-paced stories, fashionable and good-looking Korean characters, trendy culture, and other elements such as romantic sentiment expressed in the drama and the use of enticing music.

Findings also revealed that the respondents had generally favorable acceptance towards Korean male and female characters, Korean fashion and home products shown in the Koreanovela programs being aired in the Philippines.

This study hopes to provide insights to the youth of today about international programming. Furthermore, through this study the researcher aspires to provide a glimpse of how the young audience, particularly the university students, recognize the characteristics and other aspects of Korean dramas.

In addition, the study can present information on how the Filipino youth see Koreanovelas as a whole. The researcher hopes that the findings of this research can be used to advance studies on Korean drama programs.

ABSTRACT

The study aims to understand the connection between the physical appearance and credibility of news reporters according to selected Metro Manila audience.

Focus interviews were employed. Fifty research informants aged 20 to 65 who lived in Metro Manila participated in the study.

The research informants said that being beautiful more often than not means being average or below average in intellect. For this reason, when it comes to news reporters, the informants want them to be simply maitsura (average-looking) under the belief that it is the average-looking who tend to be intelligent.

The researcher found out that physical appearance is a basis for the audience in judging the intelligence of news reporters. Successively, intelligence is a basis used by the audience in judging the credibility of news reporters.

The dynamics between news reporters’ physical appearance and credibility involve the concept of intelligence. Intelligence serves as the bridge linking physical appearance and credibility.

With the emergence of intelligence as a previously unrecognized component, the value of physical appearance as a component in shaping the image of news reporters suddenly becomes intensified.

This thesis examines the organizational structure of Oblate Media Center- the news organization of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI)- and how the OMI runs its. The OMC is a tri-media outfit which houses I-Watch for television, Mindanao Cross for print and DXMS/DXOL for radio. The researchers analyzed how this affects the reportage of the newspaper and in what aspect it is different from secular media organizations. The OMC is also a community news organization that serves the city of Cotabato. By way of focused interviews and surveys, the researchers analyze the competency of the staff of the OMC in the field of journalism and if they fulfill their roles as the developers of the community. The thesis also delves into the dynamics of the role of the Church in media and society, particularly in Cotabato City, and how they function to serve their readers and viewers.

Lights, Camera, Product Placements!: A Textual Analysis on the Study of How Product Placements Create Layers of Meaning in ABS-CBN’s I Love Betty La Fea

ABSTRACT

This qualitative study aimed to find out how product placements create layers of meaning in the teleserye I Love Betty La Fea, a franchise of the Columbian series Yo Soy Betty La Fea aired on ABS-CBN last 2008.
To find out the layers of meaning created by product placements in I Love Betty La Fea, the researcher purposively selected the first fifty episodes of the teleserye and performed content analysis and textual analysis.

The researcher employed Roland Barthe’s Denotation and Connotation Model as a guide in this research. The Denotation and Connotation Model facilitated in identifying the surface and associated meanings of product placements. The model was used to describe the functional value and exchange value of product placements in the teleserye. Furthermore, the theory of Structuralism was also used as a lens in the study. The theory states that structures are “complex whole capable of analysis into its constituent elements” (Sturrock, 2003). For this study, the researcher situated the culture and mass media as the structures governing the meaning production of product placements.

Results showed that product placements do create layers of meaning in the teleserye. This was shown through incorporating the functional and exchange values of products in the dialogues in order to persuade the viewers towards consumption. Aside from this, clusters of meaning were also identified in the product placements. Clusters of meaning comprised of the seven observed themes conveyed by product placements in the teleserye. These themes were: high regard for beauty, the search for love, strong family orientation, the social value of eating, cooking as domestic labor and consumption, household as a unit of production and consumption, and stereotyping. These themes were rooted and bounded under the governing structures of culture and mass media. The influence of culture and mass media contributed in creating a structured reality for viewers in relation to product consumption.

Lastly, the researcher concluded that product placements presented its overt economic function in the teleserye: to sell the products and gain profit out of it. The teleserye packaged and presented these product placements in a way that it could fulfill the “needs” of the viewers and lure them towards consumption. It was evident that the culture of capitalism was perpetuated in the teleserye.

For future studies, the researcher recommends the use of Agenda Setting Theory to provide the perspectives of how media practitioners deliberate and promote the importance of product placements in the teleserye. Moreover, audience reception analysis can also be done on future researchePrs in order to find out how television viewers perceive the meanings portrayed by product placements. This can attest if television viewers understand the messages that advertisers and media practitioners convey to the public.
This case study provides a comprehensive historical look at ABS-CBN’s growth as a media conglomerate from 1946 up to the present. Using the political economy of communication as its framework, this thesis delves deeper into the issue of media conglomeration in the Philippine setting. The research provides information on ABS-CBN’s subsidiaries and affiliates together with ABS-CBN’s linkages to the other Lopez-owned businesses. This study also addresses the effects of media conglomeration on broadcast content.
Through the use of Archival/Documentary research, this thesis proves that political and economic factors influenced ABS-CBN’s growth into a media conglomerate. The extensive reach of ABS-CBN’s ownership through its varied interests in media and other types of businesses makes it the Philippines’ largest media conglomerate. ABS-CBN’s history also attests to how the close links between ABS-CBN and its mother ship, the Lopez Holdings Corporation, helped ABS-CBN in its development especially during its difficult years. More importantly, this study also presents the negative effects of media conglomeration on broadcast content. These effects are brought about by the interplay between ABS-CBN’s responsibility to the public and its own political and economic interests as a media conglomerate.

ABSTRACT

This undergraduate thesis studies the context surrounding the creation of the Presidential Communications Group, as well as its functions and whether the group is able to fulfill its functions and objectives. As far as consequences are concerned, its creation and unique organizational structure yields many implications for the government. Two hundred students were surveyed, and focus interviews conducted among government official and the press in order to concretely gauge public opinion. The PCG represents a failed government opportunity given the significant amount and breadth of criticism it has received in its short existence. The reorganization of the existing Office of the Press Secretary into a three-member body has presented new prospects in addressing new social media, although it has blurred the link between communication and governance roles. As a government institution the PCG cannot afford to compromise its roles as a gatekeeper of information for the state, while striving to be completely open and transparent to the public. Despite so-called "birth pains,"- which have to be fully addressed as well - the PCG must be able to operate efficiently. It has to keep the public well-informed and well-engaged, and at the same time address the nuances of new social media in presidential communication.

'''Abstract:'''

This thesis is a case study of Philippine convergence as seen from the
PinoyWannaBe production experience. Convergence is a global technological and
cultural phenomenon where mere consumers of media have become creators of
content, making a participatory culture. Convergence allows content to flow across
different platforms and posits collective intelligence as a new source of media power.
Even though the Philippines is TV-centric, more Filipinos are going online and creating
their own content. This study aims to determine the extent of convergence and its
constituent properties in the Philippines. With the use of Axel Bruns’ Produsage
Framework and Henry Jenkins’ Convergence Culture, the PinoyWannaBe blog-show
was analyzed as a case study of convergence. Using complete participation and
ethnographic interviews, this study determined the different procedures involved in
content creation and established the different sites of convergence within
PinoyWannaBe. Results show that despite the alternative platform in which it is
presented, PinoyWannaBe directly adapts television characteristics to its production
process and content. Lastly, this thesis discusses the implications of this case study on
the Filipino audience, content and mass media.

The researcher came up with the idea of conducting this study upon the realization than when watching episodes of Glee she disregards the carefree way it addressed certain social issues which she usually finds repulsive.

This study seeks to show how the presentation of the different social issues in Glee affects the acceptance of the audience. It also aims to understand the role of Filipino values in this acceptance.

Qualitative methods were used to gather the necessary data for the study. Textual analysis was used to identify the social issues often discussed in Glee and how these issues are presented in the show. A focused interview was conducted on teenagers regarding their views on the seven social issues that the study focused on. These issues are as follow: bullying, blackmail, underage drinking, teenage pregnancy, sex education and celibacy, extra-marital affairs and acceptance of gays and lesbians.

After the focused interview, four episodes of Glee which heavily featured the social issues were viewed by the respondents. Finally a focused group discussion was conducted to determine the level of acceptance by the respondents on the way the social issues were presented in the show. Framing theory was used to analyze both the text, which the show Glee, and the response of the audience.

The study concluded that Filipino values do influence the acceptance or rejection of the Filipino audience towards the presentation of social issues in Glee.
'''Abstract'''

Freshwater resources are threatened by the presence and increase of harmful algal blooms (HABs) all over the world. These toxinogenic blooms especially those which are caused by Microcystis aeruginosa, a hepatotoxin producing microalga, have been epidemiologically linked to high incidence of liver cancer through drinking microcystin contaminated water from rivers, ditches, and ponds; and were further positively associated with the incidence of colorectal cancer in some provinces in China. M. aeruginosa is one of the dominant species in Laguna de Bay, Philippines and its bloom is a yearly occurrence in the lake. Sadly, the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) is not monitoring the toxin associated with these bloom occurrences. Countermeasures have been proposed and implemented to manage HABs with varying levels of success. These control measures include the mechanical removal of the hyperscum and the application of chemical algicides but both measures are costly. Algicides lyse cyanobacterial cells which leads to the release of cyanobacteria toxins into the surrounding water. Algicides accumulate in sediments and may cause long term damage to the lake ecology. Thus, the development of environment friendly, safe non-chemical control measures such as biological control offers potential to the management of HABs.

This work focuses on the isolation and identification of microorganisms present in ordinary compost and vermicompost that are suppressive to the growth of M. aeruginosa. These microorganisms were isolated, identified through their 16S rRNA genes, their cyanolytic properties were evaluated and their lytic mechanisms had been elaborated. In this study, we are presenting three novel bacteria out of the six that we have isolated from vermicompost samples.

The novel inhibitory isolates are identified as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain Biyaya0827, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain Megumi0711 and Bacillus sp. Strain RNR0410. They exhibited high lytic abilities against M. aeruginosa and are potential biocontrol agents against its harmful blooms. The cyanolytic bacterial exudates of the two Stenotrophomonas strains are proteinaceous and most probably are enzymes while those of the Bacillus isolate are non-proteinaceous and most probably are antibiotic analogues. Acute toxicity test with Daphnia magna showed that the EC50 of the cyanolytic extracellular substances of SmB 0827, Sm M0711 and Bacillus sp. RNR0410 may not pose adverse effect on actual lake environment.
'''Abstract'''

This study focused on the development of ozone contactor-reactor design for the purpose of eliminating melanoidin, which is a major by-product of distillation industries and identified as the major colorant in sugarcane molasses wastewater.

About 6-15 liters of spent wash with approximately 2% melanoidin is generated per liter of alcohol produced. Beneficial effects such as antioxidant, antiallergenic and antimicrobial properties have been documented as reported In foodstuffs having melanoidin such as a coffee and tea. Harmful effects such as mutagenic, carcinogenic and cytotoxic effects have also been reported. Melanoidin present in waste waters is highly resistant to microbial attack making it a persistent pollutant.

Ozonation is an advanced oxidation process currently used in the disinfection of drinking water and more recently in the treatment of wastewaters. The commercial viability of ozonation as a waste water treatment process lies in its superior oxidation potential which allows it to attack inorganic matter such as dyes, pesticides and other industrial pollutants, as well as pathogens which are resistant to chlorine. Despite high operating costs, ozonation has been implemented where conventional treatment processes perform poorly such as non-biodegradable pollutants, wastewaters with toxins, and in the disinfection of drinking water infected with chlorine-resistant cryptosporidium and giardia. Reducing the operating cost of the ozonation process will provide alternative solutions to both industrial pollution and drinking water scarcity.

The resulting process was a combination of ozonation and foam-fractionation process. Configuration-wise, the design resembled a hybrid of the Turbine Mixer Contactor and Ozone Bubble Contactor configurations described by the USEPA Alternative Disinfectants and Oxidants Guidance Manual. Distillery slops from Absolute Chemicals in Nasugbu, Batangas an ethanol producer, was used to evaluate the designed ozonator diluted 20, 70 and 100 times. Analysis of COD and color were conducted on the contractor effluent using the Closed Reflux Colorimetric Method and absorbance at the peak wavelength, pH was measured using a calibrated pen-type pH meter. Ozone gas was supplied by an air-fed, air-cooled ozone generator producing one gram ozone per hour.

Bubble size was approximated by photography, and to compare the performance of the designed system, a batch test was conducted to compare with batch test data from similar runs using an ordinary air stone gas diffuser. In batch trials, the designed ozone contactor-reactor performed 102% better in terms of COD removal and 13.25% better in terms of color removal. Color reduction increased with increasing dilution and flowrate. In continuous runs, a color reduction of 40.875 color units per liter-mg-ozone was achieved at seventy times wastewater dilution, 10 minutes hydraulic residence time and 1 gram per hour ozone introduction. In 10 minutes HRT, COD was reduced by 415.83 mg O2 while color was reduced by 272.5 color units. The froth collected had 44 times the COD level of the influent, had a grainy texture and a noticeably different color. Higher percentage removal is expected if the retention time in the continuous reactor is extended, the ozone gas purity is increased and the overall mass introduction is increased. Color reduction relying in ozonation is recommended for use after a secondary clarification as a polishing stage with a higher rate of ozone introduction and purity.
'''Abstract'''

Chlorinated solvents indiscriminately disposed to the subsurface impacts not only the soil but may potentially contaminate the groundwater thus impacting the human health as well. Residual contaminants are left in the pores of the soil matrix as the solvent migrate in the subsurface, which in turn may serve as long term source of groundwater contamination. Treatment and removal of these contaminants may be facilitated by chemical oxidation using Fenton's chemistry. Hydroxyl radicals formed by the action of hydrogen peroxide and the ferrous ion catalyst chemically degrade these organic compounds to relatively benign by products such as carbon dioxide, water and metallic salts.

In the study, the viability and efficacy of using Fenton-like chemistry in the chemical oxidation of chlorinated solvents, specifically trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloro-ethylene (PCE) in contaminated aqueous and soil systems was evaluated. The study was divided in two experimental phases which included aqueous studies and soil vial experiments.
Bench-scale treatability studies done on the TCE and PCE contaminated aqueous and soil samples maintained at near neutral pH conditions showed significant contaminant removal. Aqueous samples treated with 0.521 M hydrogen peroxide and 1:1 (M/M) chelated concentration ratio resulted to 95.83±5.28% COD removal. Soil vial experiments conducted on contaminated soil samples using GC headspace analysis resulted to 93.62± 0.34% TCE and 94.40±0.35% PCE removal upon treatment. The reagent mass loading rate to the soil samples was 20000 mg hydrogen peroxide, 0.0271 mg iron and 0.00789 mg citric acid per kg of soil. The experimental results, hence, show conclusively that chemical treatment based on Fenton-like chemistry is technically viable in removing organics in both aqueous and soil systems maintained at near neutral pH.
Gusto Ko Pong Maging… is a study that aims to know how television can inform selected children studying in Nagcarlan, Laguna of their ambition formation. This study would also like to know the role of television in the ambition formation of these children. Is television central or not in children's ambition formation? Therefore, this study seeks to find out if television plays a central role in the ambition formation of children studying in Nagcarlan, Laguna. In the event that television plays a secondary role in the ambition formation of selected children studying in Nagcarlan, then this study seeks to identify what serves as the most significant factor/s by analyzing the testimonies of these children and filling in the gaps if needed. Gusto Ko Pong Maging... employed the Grounded Theory. This theory according to Strauss (1998) "was derived from data, systematically gathered and analyzed through the research process" (p. 12). The researcher using the Grounded Theory does not have any initial theory in mind; rather, he starts with the data collection and analysis and allows the theory to emerge from the data (Strauss, 1998). However, this study employed the following theories and concepts Symbolic Convergence Theory by Cragan et al, Symbolic Interactionism Theory by Mead, Social Learning Theory by Bandura, Halaga concept of F.L. Jocano and mirroring and desire formation of J.Lacan and formulated a model afterwards which was coined as: The Interaction- Consciousness Model. It was found out at the end of the study that television plays an incidental and reinforcing role in the ambition formation of selected children studying in Nagcarlan, Laguna and discovered that it was the parents of the children who have the most influential role in such activity of children.

ABSTRACT

This study describes the political candidates’ adoption and usage of Facebook in the 2010 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Election. It delves into the complicated and ambiguous correlation between the medium used and the rhetoric of political candidates. This study explores how the medium’s properties, particularly of the social networking sites, shape the rhetoric in political campaigns. The assumption was that, the Facebook enhance the rhetoric of political candidates.

The onset of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election provided a good opportunity to study this correlation. The study encompasses traditional SK campaign strategies and usage of Facebook in campaigning. Marshall McLuhan’s Technological Determinism was used as guide to prove the assumption that media are active channels that extend the self or represent identities. Content Analysis and Rhetorical Analysis were employed to describe this extension or representation in Facebook.

Theoretical and empirical data reveals that Facebook improves the ethos appeal of political candidates through representation and re-performance of themselves even in the absence of face-to-face interaction.
'''Abstract'''

Three major sol orders commonly used for agricultural purposes in the Philippines are Alfisols, Inceptisols and Ultisols. Representative sample were collected for these soil orders composed of dry and wet and with the introduction of increasing levels of elemental nutrient such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). The measurement of spectral reflectance was carried out in the laboratory using a spectrometer at a wavelength interval of 400 to 850 nanometers. Mean spectral reflectance values were computed and plotted as spectral curves for each soil order and at varying levels of N, P and K. The spectral responses of each soil order and the spectral behavior of the elemental nutrients were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) spectral derivative analysis and spectral resampling technique to sensors of selected satellite images. ANOVA was used to determine whether the soil orders and the different nutrients levels differ significantly in reflectance responses. Derivative analysis established the most responsive wavelength and the degree of differences in reflectance values among the samples. Spectral resampling matched the measured spectral data using the spectral sensitivities or filter windows of the sensors of Landsat Thematic Mapper/Multi Spectral Scanner (Landsat TM/MSS), Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Systeme Pour l'observation de la Terre (SPOT) along the electromagnetic spectrum. The central wavelength absorption by soil order and nutrient conditions was derived for the respective bands of the satellite sensors. Spectralcurve were plotted to the corresponding bands of Landsat TM/MSS, ASTER and SPOT.

The analysis of variance proved that there is a significant difference of the mean reflectance values of soil order and moisture content. Correspondingly, the increasing levels of N, P and K by soil order demonstrated significant differences in the mean reflectance values. Spectral derivative analysis confirmed that Alfisols, Inceptisols and Ultisols are distinguishable in wavelength ranges 0.45-0.52 µm, 0.52-0.60 µm, and 0.63-0.69 µm of the electromagnetic spectrum. Spectral response of phosphorous among the soil orders is distinct in the 0.76-0.85 µm, 0.45-0.52 µm, and 0.52-0.60 µm for Alfisols, Inceptisols and Ultisols, respectively. The analysis of spectral responses of the soil orders and elemental nutrients examined, in relation to other soil attributes opens up possibilities for development of spectral libraries which can support image analysis particularly for soil related studies.
ORTIGA, K.S. (2011). Speaking for the voiceless: the politics of representation of the indigenous peoples in the Philippines by non-government organizations. Unpublished undergraduate thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.<br><br>

This research studies the discourse of the representations and the production of meaning created for the advocacy subjects of non-state actors. It focuses on the video productions that major international non-government organizations (NGOs) have produced, analyzing the politics of representations that surround the indigenous peoples (IPs) of the Philippines in the context of a rising global discourse on indigeneity and in alignment with NGOs’ need for donors and funding.

The role of the indigenous peoples in the global discourse seems to have changed over time, and to date they have been highly praised as forest protectors and vanguards of the environment. This global discourse is evident in the inclusion of IPs in state declarations as well as the trending growth of NGOs that include the indigenous peoples in their campaigns today.

Using the contexts of the rising global indigeneity and NGOs’ relationship with donors and funding, my analysis leans towards how the indigenous peoples have been “othered” in their representations by NGOs.

This study employs a critical textual analysis and a critical narrative analysis of the videos to shed light on the issue of the politics of the representation of the indigenous peoples. This study examines the role of social networking sites (SNS) for the television
Friedman’s 5Cs of New Media – communication, collaboration, community, creativity,
and convergence – was used to frame the utilization of the features of the SNS that the
networks are using. Through contextual analysis of the Facebook and Twitter pages of the
networks and focus interviews with the networks’ representatives, the researcher tried to
present how the networks are utilizing this medium. The television networks’ purposes,
issues and measurements of effective social media use are also presented in this study. It
was found that the main purpose of the networks in utilizing SNS was for information
dissemination and feedback. SNS also became a community-builder as fans of the
networks connected and interacted with each other through the medium. Convergence of
content became evident as announcements, links, photos and videos are present in a
single message. Security, technical and legal issues are experienced by the networks.
However, they address these issues by creating social media policies for their networks.
Lastly, it was found that the networks are already using developed software in measuring
the effectivity of their social media use.
'''Abstract'''

This research is an attempt to integrate three technologies , remote sensing (RS), geographic information systems (GIS), and agent based modeling (ABM), to create simulation of an urban expansion model- the MarikinaSim (named after the city where the study was conducted). It incorporates spatial data and spatial process models offering a new way to see the environment. In remote sensing, change detection analysis of satellite images is a technique used in monitoring land use / and land cover changes and urban growth. Remotely sensed images of areas are obtained at different times and thereby spatial and temporal analyses are made possible for researchers to identify patterns of changes and view the different phenomena that take place on the earth’s surface. Integration of spatially referenced data is usually done in a GIS model which shows rich emphasis on topology and spatial relationship. Unfortunately, representation of these spatial data is static in nature, as they are mostly obtained in a single data and then stored. The full potential of both remote sensing and geographic information system in describing urban growth is realized in integrating the two technologies (Jensen, 1996). With RS and GIS, researchers can ?see? changes associated with urban expansion over vast areas of the earth’s surface at different times.

In the temporal analysis of space, RS and GIS can only ,see, snapshots of the surface patterns. The patterns are a result of many underlying processes. Process models which express theories predicting the nature of exchange of energy and mass within a system over time can not be portrayed by RS and GIS (Brown et all., 2004). More recent developments in modeling have included computer base simulations such as agent-based modeling in understanding environmental change like urban expansion. There have been many studies-SprawISim by Torrens et all 2004, ILUMASS by Wegener et all 2003, UrbanSim by Waddell et all 2002, and works by other scientists which attempt to investigate urban processes through statistics and object-oriented programming and explicitly using space to operate their model.

Through MarikinaSim, this research attempts to use RS and GIS’s spatially-rich data model of the environment and ABM’s process model of residential and firm location to create a simulation of urban expansion. Information comes from different sources and various scales and is integrated in GIS which acts as the base map and display platform for the study. Although the primary output of the research is creating a simulation, it can be extended to understanding the process by exploring different parameters of the ABM and visualizing their effects on the system. MarikinaSim becomes a scenario builder where different situations and events can be expressed through manipulation of the attributes of the spatial data.

ABSTRACT<br/>

This study examines the use of social media website Twitter by local news agencies for news dissemination as well as its reception by the general Filipino audience. The researcher first conducted focus interviews on the Twitter moderators of ABS-CBN News (@ABSCBNNews), ANC (@ANCALERTS), Inquirer.net (@inquirerdotnet) and Philstar.com (@PhilstarNews). The results revealed that the aforementioned news agencies decided to make Twitter accounts for their respective news companies to be able to propagate information to a broader audience, increase readership and/or viewership, and to verify and disseminate news in real time. The researcher then surveyed 100 random Filipino Twitter users on their use of Twitter as a news source. Majority of them (96%) found Twitter an effective source of news with only a few (4%) regarding it as neither effective nor ineffective. The top reasons for them preferring Twitter as a news source is that news is delivered fast, the media is accessible and is capable of easily directing them to multimedia content.
This study examined the self-presentation process of young professionals in the workplace by focusing on 1) how feedback was used social comparison, and how social comparison affected the self-presentation; 2) comparing the level of importance given by yuppies to their meta-perception and their own attitude towards behaviors in the workplace; 3) discussing the opinion of yuppies towards behaviors in the workplace and the factors that led to such opinion; 4) the relationship between the interpersonal needsinclusion, control, and affection and the self presentation of yuppies; 5) determining the probability of behavioral intention being translated into actual self-presentation. The study made use of the Theory of Self-presentation (Goffman’s Social Approach), Theory of Reasoned Action by Azjen and Fishbein, Perception and Meta-perception Theory by Laing, Social Comparison Theory by Festinger, and Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (FIRO) Theory by Schultz. A qualitative approach was employed in this study, and utilized focus interviews, focus group discussions, and observation as methods for data gathering. The study found out that, young professionals based their actions or self-presentation mostly on the nature of relationship that they had with another individual. Past and future experiences were also big factors in deciding their course of action. The interpersonal needs- control, inclusion, and affection were deemed important by the yuppies in their workplace.

'''Abstract'''

Recent advances in wireless communication schemes have resulted in an increasing demand for small, highly integrated RF transceivers that have very low power dissipation. Consequently, there has been an aggressive downscaling of RF CMOS technologies, enabling the possibility of denser integration, higher transit frequencies, and lower costs.

However, CMOS scaling has introduced new design challenges. Complex systems such as wireless receivers could no longer be analyzed simply at the circuit level. There arises a need to simulate new architectures at a higher level of abstraction so that they can be optimized and compared quantitatively in terms of performance, power and area. There exists a large dependency between system-level architectural decisions and performance metrics of each circuit block in the architecture, which is in turn dictated by the technology process being used.

In this research, the different system-level issues involved in the design of a direct-conversion receiver are investigated. The receiver is designed to target Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) applications, which has been rapidly gaining momentum as an alternative to cable and DSL in delivering wireless broadband access to end-users.

It was found through simulations that the CMOS process introduces large values of flicker noise, which could be a barrier especially for the design of the down-conversion mixer and the other baseband blocks such as the filter and the VGA.

High-level design trade-offs in the direct-conversion receiver architecture are also investigated to characterize the effect of each block in the whole system’s performance. Based on system-level simulations, a design flow is developed that would further improve subsequent efforts to design a fully integrated wireless CMOS transceiver, in the laboratory.

The problems arising from the disposal of large amount of plastic products in decreasingly available landfill facilities may be addressed by waste minimization techniques. Among the waste minimization techniques, source reduction, specifically product changes such as product substitution, is prioritized due to high environmental desirability and substantial impact in minimizing waste. Minimizing plastic waste through plas tics product substitution would entail developing biodegradable materials that exhibit properties similar to plastics. Hence, a biodegradable, lignpcellulosic-reinforced, thermoplastic starch foam material was developed which consists of cassava starch, glycerol, calcium carbonate, agar, carrageanan, water or egg whites and lignocellulosic materials particularly cassava pulp or cassava bark. The mixture is processed through compression/expansion technology utilizing a thermal compressor at a temperature of 220-240C and a pressure of 281.37 psia. The material is subjected to several tests: mechanical strength, water absorption, resistance to chemical reagents and biodegradability using ASTM D 695M-91 & D 638M-91a, ASTM D 570-81(1988), ASTM D 543-87 and ASTM D 5247-92, in order to compare it with existing plastic foam materials. Generally, the results of the tests indicate that the material has comparable properties to that of typical plastic foams, with the exception of water absorptivity, which is higher for this new material. For the biodegradability test, fungi and bacteria inoculated samples have lost about 81% of their mass, after 2 weeks. An average of 15% of this mass loss is attributable to the biodegradation of the samples by the fungal and bacterial microorganisms introduced. This demonstrated the material's biodegradability in that aside from the mechanical degradation and degradation from the material's interaction with water, the microorganisms introduced were able to break down and assimilate the material. 14.3% cassava starch, 42% water and 40% cassava pulp was the composition of the sample having the highest mechanical strength (6111.25 psi compressive strength and 230 psi tensile strength), the highest mass lost due to biodegradation (39.9% ub fungal microorganisms and 7.5% in bacterial microorganisms) and comparable properties upon exposure to chemicals (i.e. sodium hydroxide and toluene). This particular formulation may be used as a substitute for some plastic foam products in the market, decreasing the amount of non-biodegradable waste that ends up in the landfills.

ABSTRACT:

This dissertation examines whether public opinion surveys created an impact on the voters’ preference during the 2004 and 2010 electoral campaign. Public opinion surveys have always been of general public interest. It has been condemned as a political mechanism and black propaganda by political candidates and analysts alike. Yet, the print and broadcast media treat poll results as main headlines. To analyze the impact of the publication of opinion polls to voters, this dissertation examined the result of a survey conducted among 385 Metro Manila registered voters. The researchers have also interviewed political analysts, newspaper editors, and a campaign manager to get a professional perspective on this issue. A content analysis of 16 presidential and vice-presidential pre-election surveys administered on election periods covered in this study as well as four official COMELEC results has been conducted to know if public opinion surveys influence and predict the outcome of the presidential and vice-presidential elections. Opinion poll results were clearly reflected in the outcome of the actual election results covered in this study, but its ability to influence the voters’ choice of candidate is very minimal. The candidates’ rankings in election surveys, meanwhile, do not influence media’s coverage of their campaigns.
ABSTRACT

This study believes that each television show or program speaks of a voice of the community and the culture from which it emanates. Thus, it delves into the study of representations, particularly of the Philippine criminal justice system in a television serial. The criminal justice system is the instrument by which the government controls and regulates crime. In the Philippines, the criminal justice system has five interdependent pillars: law enforcement, prosecution, courts, jail system, and the community. This study focuses on the representations of the Philippine criminal justice system in Dahil May Isang Ikaw, a television serial. It also aims to answer how the television serial portrays the environment in relation to the representations of the criminal justice system and examine how the culture industry perspective rests beneath such representations. Overall, this study provides information about the criminal justice system, reads the implications of its representations, and scrutinizes the link of the culture industry with the representations, with a goal to inform and stir up the curiosity of its readers to question how, why, and what possibilities are present with the existence of such representations.

ABSTRACT

Fashion is a very common and basic human experience, which is often overlooked and branded as superficial. Whether we admit it or not, fashion is an integral part of our daily lives. A lot is expressed about a person’s character, mood, personality, ideals, and lifestyle through his or her choices of clothing. My thesis topic is about the representation of the sense of self and virtual identity through fashion blogs. Fashion bloggers deliberately post photographs of themselves wearing different outfits they wore on different occasions and situations. This study focuses on the fashion blogger’s virtual body and its packaged identity - how a virtual identity is created and how their sense of selves are projected to the world through the internet. Interpretations emphasize that fashion bloggers are not just empty virtual bodies but as clothed bodies, and bodies as lived experience. The analyses are based on the images they have uploaded on their fashion blogs. These images are considered narrations of the self and are read as text. This study is based on the reader’s perspective using Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author. Therefore, the intended meanings of the authors, in this case, the fashion bloggers, with their clothing are no longer considered. Instead, this thesis focuses on how the reader, in this case, I, perceive and interpret the clothing and the body.
Biofiltration is a process that utilizes microrganisms to metabolize and convert pollutants into harmless byproducts such as water and carbon dioxide. This process was employed in the removal of xylene and toluene vapors in air using a bacterial consortium that completely mineralized thesepollutants. Kinetics study conducted as part of this research showed that the bacterial consortium degraded p- and m- xylene and toluene following Monod model and did not degrade o-xylene and benzene. Two methods were used and compared in the determination of degradation kinetics-headspace sampling and optical density measurement. Results showed that there was no significant difference in these two methods as far the determination of kinetic parameters is concerned. The effects of different operating parameters on removal of xylene and toluene vapors were measured in both classical and biotrickling biofilters. The effects of space time, inlet gas concentration and medium addition on the removal of xylene and toluene in classical biofilter and biotrickling filter and of liquid recirculation rate and frequency of medium change on biotrickling filter performance were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the addition of fresh mineral medium in the classical biofilter increased its elimination capacity (EC). While replenishment of recirculating mineral medium in the trickling biofilter increased eleimination of xylene and toluene. Increased recirculation rate in the biotrickling filter increased removal of toluene or xylene until an optimal recirculation rate was reached. The value of the optimal recirculation rate was dependent on the inlet concentration of the substrate, with higher optimal recirculation rate at higher inlet substrate concentrations.

Comparison of the performance of the classical and trickling biofilters showed that considering only elimination capacity, the biotrickling filter is better choice. Although the biotrickling filter has a EC, especially at high substrate concentrations, the added cost of medium replenishment was a factor that must be balanced with higher EC in determining which of the two type of filters is the optimal choice.

Urban sprawl, or unplanned and uncontrolled spreading out of built-up areas, causes problems in the allocation of basic needs and increases risk to life and property in the face of disasters. This study integrates remote sensing, photogrammetry, and geographic information systems in adopting Shannon’s entropy top measure and monitor urban sprawl. Shannon’s entropy is an index used to quantify the degree of dispersion or concentration of built-up areas. Previous studies have applied this concept to demonstrate the horizontal spread of built-up. However, through time, people construct multiple-storey houses to accommodate the increasing population. Thus, in order to determine the full scope of sprawl, the concept of Shannon’s entropy is extended to consider the vertical growth of built-up.
This study in the mountainous city of Baguio in northern Philippines shows that together with image processing and interpretation tools, built-up can be readily identified and quantified from temporal satellite images and aerial photographs. The horizontal and vertical dimensions of entropy in Baguio City and its selected barangays are shown to have almost reached their critical limit, implying that the area has tremendously grown and is continuously expanding in both dimensions. A methodology for risk equation (risk=hazard x vulnerability). The computed values represent the urban situation of Baguio City, and are recommended for consideration by the city government in monitoring the growth of built-up areas and in drafting measures and policies to address urban sprawl’s imminent effects.
'''Abstract'''

In managing a multipurpose dam, knowledge of water inflow or the amount of water entering the reservoir is essential in planning and scheduling discharges for optimal power production and irrigation supply, and in flood control. Utilization of satellite imagery improves inflow estimates provided by digital spatial data rather than calculations from drawn maps. Satellite imagery yields measurements over an area are obtained instead of extrapolations from point measurements.

Using remote sensing data and GIS, two approaches are developed in this study to estimate inflow: (1) Creation of IMBAC (Inflow Monitoring from Basin Assessment Calculations), a new inflow estimation system using available satellite-derived data and JAVA programming; and (2) Maximizing the use of satellite-derived data for inflow estimation in an existing hydrologic modeling system, the US Army Corps of Engineers’ HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System), where three different basin models are used to validate the results—the initial constant model, the SCS curve number model, and the soil moisture accounting model.

The developed approaches to estimate inflow are applied to the Magat watershed; its dam is one of the largest multipurpose dams in Southeast Asia. Its 117-km2 reservoir stores water to irrigate 85,000 hectares of farmland and its 360-MW hydro-power plant provides electricity for Luzon, the Philippines’ largest island. Due to the implementation of the Philippine Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) in 2001, management of the reservoir and the dam facilities has to be shared. The dam and the plant intake gates are owned and operated by the National Irrigation Administration. Management of the plant itself is transferred to SN Aboitiz Power Incorporated (SNAP). Authorization of discharges during extreme weather conditions comes from the country’s meteorological agency, the PAGASA. With such a complex nature of the dam’s multi-stakeholder management involving private and public entities with different discharge motivations, a vital decision support system that concerns inflow estimation is paramount.

This study presents the results of the developed methodology to estimate inflow using remote sensing as an alternative to the current water-level approach being used locally. It shows that both the IMBAC and the HEC-HMS approach were successful in showing the behavior of watershed response. The second approach was more successful in terms of the immediate potential for operational use.
'''Abstract'''

The designation of national parks and forest lands by the government entails the regulation of some activities such as the allocation of space for certain uses. The Revised Forestry Code’s implementation in 1975 resulted in the designation of lands into Alienable and Disposable (A and D) and Forest Land categories. Agricultural activities or non-forest encroachment in the forest lands pose challenges to the policies that regulate the use of forest resources. When non-forest activities encroach into national parks and protected areas, they show the conflict between actual resource use and the policies that created these parks. This conflict between forest use and protection policies has implications on the utilization of forest resources and on the resource users themselves, such as the Agta indigenous inhabitants of Quezon Province.

This research analyzes the land cover changes in the Kanan Watershed in the municipality of General Nakar, Quezon Province. It describes forest cover changes in the lands and in the area that was designated as a National Park. The information derived from the study can contribute to forest management planning among the various stakeholders of the Kanan Watershed. Landsat images acquired in 1972, 1989 and 2002 were used for the research. Maximum likehood classification was employed to classify each image while post classification change detection through spatial analysis in a GIS environment was also performed to determine stable non-forest and stable forest areas. Knowledge of local resource persons and other information such as land cover data from DENR and NAMRIA guided the selection of classification training areas which relied on visual interpretation of satellite images. Field visits in portions of General Nakar were conducted to verify the training areas.

The examination of three images shows that in areas of the Kanan Watershed that are 18% or above in slope (Forest Land by the Revised Forestry Code of 1975) and are cloudless in all three images, 0.5% has been identified as consistently non-forested since 1972 until 2002, while 61.45% of the area is seen as stable forest for the period. Change from forest to non-forest cover has been increasing through the years, with non-forest encroachment even reaching up to the 40% slope, which is beyond the 18% slope that is set as the limit of A and D lands.

Remote sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) analytical techniques facilitated the analysis of changes in the environment of the study area through time. The information on land cover that they generate, together with the experience of the people whose livelihoods depend on the forest, can be utilized in assessing policies on forest use and protection implemented in the area of interest. As this study shows, RS and GIS methodologies can contribute to this purpose by providing reliable information on forest cover changes.
Compost and vermicast were evaluated as sorbents for the removal of heavy metals (Cu2+, Cr6+, and Fe2+) from acidic mine water. Characterization revealed high action exchange capacity, total organic matter content, calcium carbonates, high moisture and water holding capacity, irregular morphology, surface functional groups, and colonies of microorganisms. In addition to these, samples have high base saturation and slightly acidic pH.

Sorption was significantly affected by pH. Compost has highest adsorption intensity for Cu2+ (0.8318 dm-3g-1at pH 3), and vermicast with Fe2+ (1.884 dm-3g-1at pH 2.5). All metals followed Freundlich isotherm model which suggested physisorption mechanism. This was supported by calculated heats of adsorption values. The best fir kinetic model was pseudo-second order indicative of surface adsorption as rate limiting reaction. Intra-particle diffusion model was obeyed by Cu2+ and Fe2+.

Column experiments showed 99% removal of Cu2+and higher than 84% in the presence of Cr6+. With Fe2+, precipitation of Fe(OH)3 occurred. The column breakthrough time to meet the 2008 DENR Proposed Effluent standard for Cu2+ was 18.23 min (25g compost and 1000 mg L. -1feed at 5 mL min-1). Sequential extraction of contaminated samples revealed that Cu2+and Cr6+ were at least 40% mobile and available once sorbed in the samples while Fe2+was released mostly only when reduced.

Redefining Hiya: How Face to Face Challenges Its Guest Participants’ Value of Hiya

ABSTRACT

The study aims to know how the nature of the talk show Face to Face influences
the mindset and meaning formation of its guest participants for joining the culturally
deviant program.

“Violence is the simplest and cheapest dramatic means to demonstrate who wins
in the game of life and rules by which the game is played” (Gerbner in Griffin, 2009). In
Face to Face, discussion of two opposing parties is not all there is. There is always a
segment where two sides make an effort to hurt and curse each other. Gerbner’s words
hold true whenever the said talk show permits or truly allots airtime for deliberate
attempted violence, which is not socially, culturally and publicly accepted in the country.

Physical and environmental factors influence the attitudes and behaviors of the
guest participants, and so the meanings of their actions change as well. Also, hiya has
been redefined now that the Philippines falls in a modern type of society. It would also be
interesting to look at this topic in a political economy angle where program content is
commodified.

The TV talk show, Face to Face, is more than just a public place. It is a nationally
broadcast arena of conflicting parties that actually challenges the Filipinos’ unique trait,
hiya. In a culture that is bound by strict unspoken social norms, Face to Face exposes an
alternative way of conflict-resolution that challenges Filipinos’ notion of hiya.
