==About us==

The Instrumentation Physics Laboratory (IPL) is one of the research laboratories of the National Institute of Physics (NIP). It promotes an atmosphere of learning and collaboration among teachers, graduate, and undergraduate students in building a scientific tradition in the Philippines. IPL started as a laboratory working on optics and signal processing. Now, it has expanded into other fields in the theoretical and applied physics as shown by its division into different sub-groups.

==Sub-groups==

====Complex Systems Group====
Complex systems include a wide range of systems whose emergent features upon interaction are not predictable from isolated components. Our group combines theoretical and experimental approach to make high impact contributions in understanding the dynamics of granular materials, social and complex networks, and synchronization patterns.Complex networks, neural networks, differential equations, agent based modeling, and cellular automata are some of the techniques used to describe complex systems under study.

Granular Materials:
Landslides, debris flows, and avalanches among others are examples of processes in which our understanding of the dynamics is quite limited because the physics associated with granular matter is still unresolved. Describing granular material is still a challenge owing to the fact that the collective behavior of an ensemble of numerous solid grains does not obey any known hydrodynamic equations. Our group looks scaling principles that will allow the statistics of large events be replicated in table top set-ups. Our current experimental and theoretical work on landslides, granular mixing and clogging, and miniature granular mounds are getting good reviews from the international community.

Complex Networks:
Our group intends to utilize the tools that have recently been developed in the field of complex systems (e.g. neural networks, self organized criticallity, simplex projection, etc) to quantify the forces that drive the evolution of social systems - a field referred to as sociometry. Understanding how each of these forces interacts might lead to insightful institutional policies that will allow a more efficient design and implementation of community projects, disaster management initiatives, and other social networks related activities. We aim to catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations among social and natural scientists and serve as the major gatekeepers of critical information relating to social attributes of Philippine culture. It has to be noted that many organizations in the USA attempt to improve their efficiency through sociometric analyses. Among our interests include dynamics of: (1) interaction in a classroom (Complexity 2008), (2) multilevel marketing (Physica A 2008), (3) Gossip propagation, (4) Public opinion, (5) Family planning and (6) Social networking.

Synchronization:
Network elements communicate and exhibit collective behavior for efficient functioning. Our group looks into the adjustment of the rhythms of natural and artificial systems due even if the interaction is weak or even below the detectable threshold. Current research thrusts of the group include noise induced pattern formation, spatial mode, time series analysis, particle tracking, transverse stability and synchronization of spatial modules in semiconductor lasers. The synchronization group seeks the application of synchronization from quantum systems to its application to industry.

Group Leaders:

* May T. Lim, PhD Associate Professor
* Giovanni A. Tapang, PhD Associate Professor
* Johnrob Y. Bantang, PhD Assistant Professor

====Photonics Group====

The Photonics Group has 2 subgroups, namely the Laser Microscopy Group, and the Wavefront Engineering Team.

The Laser Microscopy Group develops and constructs advanced microscope systems for rapid and non-invasive characterization of embedded defects inside semiconductor microchips. This has led to investigations on semiconductor defect localization using their absorption properties (via near-IR spectral imaging), thermal gradient mapping of integrated circuits and thermoreflectance imaging using a custom-built spectral microscope. Current research thrusts have extended the application to biomedicine. These include five-dimensional imaging of mouse embryos using two-photon excitation spectral microscopy; biomedical optics applied to pathology; spectral microscopy applied to biophotonics and forensics; and near-field scanning microscopy.

The Wavefront Engineering Team (WET) is interested in the application of recent advances in optical technology to various instrumentation research ventures. In particular, we are concerned in addressing two-dimensional phase, amplitude and state-of-polarization patterns of a coherent beam using programmable spatial light modulators to generate novel three-dimensional (3D) light patterns. The possibilities of these complex 3D optical fields point towards applications in optical microscopy; multiple beam optical trapping; micro-fabrication via nonlinear photo-polymerization; complex field coupling to advanced optical waveguides coupling for fiber sensors and more. Generation of the 3D optical fields makes use of a blend of interferometry-based techniques, in particular phase contrast and computer generated holography.
Group Leaders:

* Caesar A. Saloma, PhD Professor
* Giovanni A. Tapang, PhD Associate Professor

====Video and Image Processing Group====

The group works on improving and developing new methods of acquisition and manipulation of images and other signals from cameras and microscopes to extract and enhance information. Currently, the group concentrates on the following applications: spectral imaging (bioluminescence and spectral microscopy); marine signal and image processing (coral reef classification and optical properties of coastal waters); human color vision; biometrics (gait imaging and human tracking); and art conservation (onset of surface defects, color rejuvenation, and texture analysis of paintings).

[[Image: PSYSC_Logo.png|200px|thumb|right|PSYSC logo]]

The Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs is a non-stock, non-profit, non-government, and non-sectarian organization. It is the only national federation of youth science clubs in the Philippines and is the first and largest science club umbrella organization in Asia. Its thrust is to promote the Public Understanding of Science, Technology and Environment (PUSTE). With more than 100,000 active members nationwide, the society on its 40th year of existence is continuously conducting activities geared towards the promotion of scientific interests and consciousness among our youth.

==PSYSC History==

On March 5, 1971, a group of science fair winners decided to form the National Science Club of the Philippines. It was originally a friendship group under the auspices of the Science Foundation of the Philippines (SFP) composed of the different science fair winners across the regions. However, seeing the need of establishing an organization with a wider scope and coverage, the organization was renamed later as Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Inc. and thus, with its new name PSYSC was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1974. A Constitution and By-Laws was ratified and a broader objective, the promotion of science consciousness among the youth through the coordination of science club activities, was adapted.

The science club movement flourished under the SFP. Together with the Science Club Advisers Association of the Philippines (SCAAP) and the Philippine Association of Science and Math Supervisors (PASMS), the PSYSC conducted science fairs, symposia, quizzes, and other activities geared towards the promotion of public understanding of science, technology and the environment (PUSTE).

In 1979, these efforts were given due recognition when President Ferdinand Marcos signed Presidential Decree No. 1895 declaring September of every year as National Science Club Month (NSCM).

With the reorganization of bureaucracy in 1988, the SFP (renamed Science Promotions Institute) was abolished. With this, the PSYSC, SCAAP and PASMS were left on their own. Youth science promotions programs met their untimely death and along with them, the SFP-attached organizations themselves.The PSYSC stood firm, however. Its officers rallied behind the organization’s cause and continued to pursue the thrusts of the PSYSC. In 1990, it conducted the National Youth Science and Technology Summer Camp on its own for the first time. In 1996, the 1st National Children’s Science Interactive Workshop (CSIW) was conducted, an activity designed to promote ST&E among its elementary affiliates. To meet the demands of changing times, the organization amended its constitution during the 1998 National Centennial Youth Science Leaders’ Congress in Baguio City.
The PSYSC has grown tremendously. Its programs and projects are now more comprehensive in scope. Its affiliation has increased substantially, reaching a high of more than 300,000 in the fiscal year 1999-200, and attendance in its activities continues to grow. Truly, the PSYSC has come a long, long way, and would continue to reach greater heights.

==Vision==

We envision a Philippine Society where Science, Technology, and Environment (ST&E) is a culture, a mindset, an orientation, an outlook, and a way of life, where:

Learning ST&E is easy, fun, simple, and comprehensible;

There is a free exchange of ST&E concepts and ideas by, and among ST&E enthusiasts;

ST&E is applied for the improvement and development of the individual, the family, the community and the society, and;

There is a concerted action by all individuals and sectors for making this vision a reality.

==Mission==

To initiate programs, projects and activities that shall complement and supplement formal science education;

To popularize science clubbing as an effective means of promoting scientific consciousness and scientific culture among the youth;

To organize, maintain, monitor, and initiate the network of youth science clubs;

To promote the application and understanding of science, technology, and the environment (ST&E) among the youth through the conduct of relevant projects and activities, and;

To call for the involvement of all sectors in ST&E programs projects, and advocacy.

==Activities==

====National Youth Science, Technology and Environment Summer Camp (NYSTESC)====

The National Youth Science Technology and Environment Science Camp or NYSTESC is a 4-day event featuring lectures, interactive workshops, team-building activities, contests, socialization events, educational trip and a pledge to the science clubbing movement. These activities are not meant for students alone; it also offers a version for mentors. The participants of NYSTESC are high school students (usually 2nd to 3rd year level) from public and private schools. The topics for each year vary. Since its inception, NYSTESC has covered conventional topics such as chemistry, biology, earth science, and physics to more applied and complex fields of science such as biodiversity, environmental science and even disaster risk management. NYSTESC is held during the early parts of April, in line with the availability of our volunteers who organize and facilitate the events.

====National Science Club Month (NSCM)====

Mandated by Presidential Proclamation 264, the National Science Club Month is celebrated every September. It is a month long celebration, wherein PSYSC offers a whole month packed with science related activities such as:
PSYSC Science Olympiad(PSO)

The PSYSC Science Olympiad or PSO is a nationwide science quiz show designed to evaluate how competitive students are across the Philippines. A nationwide elimination is done during the first Saturday of September, where only the top 20 schools are chosen to enter the national finals. The National Finals is held in NCR during the 3rd Saturday of September and is composed of practical and theoretical tests.
National Science Club Summit (SUMMIT)

Thinking that not everyone is capable of attending the NYSTESC, PSYSC brought in the SUMMIT. It is a 2 days – 1 night activity for high school students. SUMMIT features a lecture, workshops, team-building activities, presentation of science clubs, Regional Council Elections and the rendering of plans for the region. SUMMIT is held in different sites across the Philippines during the first weekend of September.
MATH-SCI-A-KA

MATHSCIAKA stands for Mathematics, Science at Kapaligiran. It is a Luzon-wide event, wherein one whole day is allotted for workshops and experiments. The competition is open for both high school and elementary students from public and private schools. Aside from interactive workshops, there is also a competition entitled Engineering Science Challenge, where schools are given engineering projects which they make at home or in school and bring it during the MATHSCIAKA proper to test which among other entries perform the best.
I Teach Science Seminar (ITSS)

I Teach Science Seminar or ITSS is an enrichment seminar for teachers featuring ways on how they can make science teaching fun and interactive. The activity is free of charge for affiliated science clubs and is PSYSC’s way of thanking the teachers for the service they bring to the youth and as well as to the organization.

====Children’s Science Interactive Workshop (CSIW)====

The Children’s Science interactive Workshop or CSIW is a science camp meant for elementary students (usually from grades 3 to 6). Like NYSTESC, it is packed with lots of fun and learning science related activities that would ignite the interest of elementary students. CSIW is usually conducted during the 3rd or 4th week of October, in line with the semester break.

Learn more about earth’s wonders and develop your love for environment through the fun lectures and exciting workshops that we have prepared.

==Vision==

We envision a Philippine Society where Science, Technology, and Environment (ST&E) is a culture, a mindset, an orientation, an outlook, and a way of life, where:

Learning ST&E is easy, fun, simple, and comprehensible;

There is a free exchange of ST&E concepts and ideas by, and among ST&E enthusiasts;

ST&E is applied for the improvement and development of the individual, the family, the community and the society, and;

There is a concerted action by all individuals and sectors for making this vision a reality.

==Mission==

To initiate programs, projects and activities that shall complement and supplement formal science education;

To popularize science clubbing as an effective means of promoting scientific consciousness and scientific culture among the youth;

To organize, maintain, monitor, and initiate the network of youth science clubs;

To promote the application and understanding of science, technology, and the environment (ST&E) among the youth through the conduct of relevant projects and activities, and;

To call for the involvement of all sectors in ST&E programs projects, and advocacy.

==Activities==

====National Science Club Month (NSCM)====

====Children’s Science Interactive Workshop (CSIW)====

[[Image: PSYSC_Logo.png|200px|thumb|right|PSYSC Logo logo]]

The Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs is a non-stock, non-profit, non-government, and non-sectarian organization. It is the only national federation of youth science clubs in the Philippines and is the first and largest science club umbrella organization in Asia. Its thrust is to promote the Public Understanding of Science, Technology and Environment (PUSTE). With more than 100,000 active members nationwide, the society on its 40th year of existence is continuously conducting activities geared towards the promotion of scientific interests and consciousness among our youth.

==PSYSC History==

==Vision==

We envision a Philippine Society where Science, Technology, and Environment (ST&E) is a culture, a mindset, an orientation, an outlook, and a way of life, where:

Learning ST&E is easy, fun, simple, and comprehensible;

There is a free exchange of ST&E concepts and ideas by, and among ST&E enthusiasts;

ST&E is applied for the improvement and development of the individual, the family, the community and the society, and;

There is a concerted action by all individuals and sectors for making this vision a reality.

==Mission==

To initiate programs, projects and activities that shall complement and supplement formal science education;

To popularize science clubbing as an effective means of promoting scientific consciousness and scientific culture among the youth;

To organize, maintain, monitor, and initiate the network of youth science clubs;

To promote the application and understanding of science, technology, and the environment (ST&E) among the youth through the conduct of relevant projects and activities, and;

To call for the involvement of all sectors in ST&E programs projects, and advocacy.

==Activities==

'''National Youth Science, Technology and Environment Summer Camp (NYSTESC)'''

'''National Science Club Month (NSCM)'''
Mandated by Presidential Proclamation 264, the National Science Club Month is celebrated every September. It is a month long celebration, wherein PSYSC offers a whole month packed with science related activities such as:
PSYSC Science Olympiad

'''Children’s Science Interactive Workshop (CSIW)'''
The Children’s Science interactive Workshop or CSIW is a science camp meant for elementary students (usually from grades 3 to 6). Like NYSTESC, it is packed with lots of fun and learning science related activities that would ignite the interest of elementary students. CSIW is usually conducted during the 3rd or 4th week of October, in line with the semester break.

Learn more about earth’s wonders and develop your love for environment through the fun lectures and exciting workshops that we have prepared.
