In the Name of Power: An Analysis of the Representation of the Discourse of the Catholic Church on Television Drama

ABSTRACT

This study is an analysis of the representation on TV drama of the discourse of the Catholic Church’s powers. It analyzed the Church’s representation in ABS-CBN’s TV drama series Dahil sa Pag-ibig. The main objective of this study was to describe the series’ representation of the Church and its powers through the dialogues and visual images used. The Discourses produced in this representation were also discussed.

In doing this, the concept of representation described by Stuart Hall was used to determine the elements used in the Church’s representation. The lens of discourse analysis was then used in analyzing the dialogues and images.

Upon the analysis, it was seen that the media’s representations of the Church and its powers in the series were those that are favorable to the Church. Through the images and dialogues, an idealized image of the Church was produced and the exercise of its powers was represented positively for the good of its followers. The Discourse in the series carried a positive representation of the Church and the exercise of its powers, therefore helping in the promotion of the Catholic Church’s power in the Philippines.
