ABSTRACT

Former lovers Ace and Jack come face to face with one another in a poker game with long-time friends. The friendly poker-game turns into an intimate strip poker game as they are the only players left. The stakes rise as both players aim to be unbeatable at the game, pushing it far as they can go.

The film examines the parallelism between poker and relationships. It explores the idea of pain and subjectivity through a philosophical approach. The link between emotional and physical pain is the uncertain subjective, the gray areas in between the supposed dichotomy of labels.

It tries to capture the essence of the interaction between the characters through tight shots and visuals and tells the story of a relationship through the language and dynamics of a poker game.

ABSTRACT

Non-juvenile animation is a hybridization of two television genres that employs the elements of adult comedy but is translated through the representation of child-like elements in graphics, texture, and composition. It contains juvenile-friendly visuals while portraying adult contexts, language and characteristics in story themes such as sexual, political, satirical, economic, social and violent. This genre therefore displays the dichotomy of catering visually to juveniles and thematically to adults. With media accessibility made easy in this day and age, juveniles aged between 12 and 17 years old are able to patronize non-juvenile animation enough to appreciate its unusual nature and humor, raising the inquiry of how they are able to do so, with the different elements that build up the show. Their negotiation of meaning situated in their process of cognition, is the main focus of this study.

The data were gathered in this research via a focus group discussion among juveniles between 12 and 17 years old and in-depth interviews from expert cognitive adolescent psychologists. Results were analyzed using Jung’s Theory of Personality, first in identifying the respondents according to the ways they use cognition; Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory as a guide in providing specific concepts that examine how adolescents’ process information from non-juvenile animation; and Piaget’s Cognitive Theory as a lens to by which manner do nonjuveniles (adolescents) process non-juvenile information cognitively. The study discovered that certain types of juveniles (according to Jung) understand and process information in specific ways (Bandura’s theory), and decode and form meanings through different cognitive manners (Piaget).

For further research, this study recommends that the causes and effects of juvenile patronage towards non-juvenile animation be explored, and being that this is a cognitive inquiry, future studies may also explore the affective and behavioral dimensions of the same study.

ABSTRACT

This study, with its goal of exploring the effectiveness of the micro-blogging service Twitter in raising news consciousness among Metro Manila college students, was able to effectively gauge the news awareness and media usage of 150 college students from the Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines, and University of Sto.Tomas, through a survey. The general culture of Twitter usage among the youth, which is based on proximity and personal interests, was also explored through focus interviews of six informants. Additionally an independent observation of five Twitter news sites showed that the online counterparts of television news sites ranked higher than the online counterpart of a print news site, perhaps supporting the claim of television’s ubiquity over print even in the online arena. These findings show the changing usage of media by the youth based on various factors and the possible supplementation of new media to the existing usage of traditional media in delivering news.
The internet is fast-becoming a tool to satisfy the various needs and lifestyles of its users. Among those who have joined the bandwagon of utilizing the new medium are the socio-political organizations. This descriptive study examined the correlation between online activity and actual participation in socio-political activism by internet users. To supply answers to this inquiry with regards to the role of the internet in Philippine activism, data from 150 survey respondents and 4 key informants were analyzed. The internet plays a role in widening the reach of socio-political campaigns. Deepening the participation of online activists remains to be one of the challenges that socio-political parties face. The need to self-actualize can only be achieved in one’s actual participation. The internet becomes instrumental to an individual’s search for Self-actualization only when it is able to bridge the virtual and the actual.
Cataan, J. C. (2011). ''A ‘World’ Within the World: The Jejemons as the ‘Other’ Culture'',
Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass

This research entitled ''A ‘World’ Within the World: The Jejemons as the ‘Other’ Culture''
gives a basic picture of the Jejemon phenomenon. I start with criticizing the concept of
‘subculture’ and establish its difference with ‘sub-culture’. I consistently use the latter
throughout the research.

This study explores beyond the empowerment-resistance model of many previous
studies, as it coins an original concept of ‘Jejemony’ or Jejemons’ alternative hegemony. It also
raises a relevant research problem on how Jejemons apply ‘Jejemony’ in their everyday life as a
form of resistance and style.

To ground this research, the review of related literature traces the roots of the concept
‘subculture’. As the years progress, the concept suffers some relevant critiques such as extreme
empiricism, its liberal application to any phenomenon, and the neglect and failure to always
relate to class and ethnicity. At the end of the review, it directs the research to coin a new term
that is more fitting with the emerging sub-cultures in the Philippines and in the world.
In the Philippine popular culture scene, the most interesting ‘subculture’ to date is the
Jejemonsters or simply Jejemons. In a short span of time, they have proven the strength of a
subordinate culture to fit into the nation’s state of affairs and the mainstream media as evident
with GMA Network’s show, Jejemom. I use participant observation as the primary method in
studying the phenomenon. I spent five weeks researching in the field, living with the Jejemons
and as a Jejemon.

This research is written in two languages, English and Jejenese, the Jejemons’ language.
The former serves as the main text.
This study aims to determine the internal and external factors that affect the news
content and watchdog function of the community newspapers Northern Forum and
Northern Post, as well as the effect ultimately on the readers. Both newspapers are
centered in Tuguegarao City but circulate throughout Region 2. For the study, the
researchers personally interviewed the editors and owners of the newspapers, as well as a
writer of a government news agency in Tuguegarao City. They interviewed readers of the
said community newspapers to determine their effects on the readers. They also
performed a content analysis of the July- December 2010 news articles to determine their
journalistic quality in terms of accuracy, balance, humaneness, stewardship and
technicality. The researchers found out that the internal factors affecting the news content
are ownership, organizational structure, educational background of the staff, political
background of the staff, working policies, slant, target market, level of technologies and
finance. The external factor that affects the news content is the political atmosphere of
Cagayan Valley. Both these community newspapers are not able to perform their
watchdog function in the ideal sense as they only publish developmental news fed to
them by government news agencies. Since they only publish pro-government news, the
readers are led into believing that the government is faultless, contrary to reality.
This study examines the similarities and differences between locally made women’s magazines and local editions of foreign women’s magazines as well as their effect on the self-perception of their readers.
The content of select women’s magazines published by MEGA Publishing and Summit Media were analyzed based their magazine covers, the number and nature of their articles and advertisements, and the gender and nationality of their writers and cover models. High school students from exclusive girl schools were surveyed to determine the effect of these magazines on their lifestyle.
Both types of magazines had a mixture of Filipino and Western topics in their content but Mega and Meg magazines featured more Filipino items in their articles while articles in Candy and Preview tended to prioritize Western, specifically Hollywood, personalities and products. However, respondents were unable to distinguish major differences between the two magazine types. Both types were discovered to have a negative effect on the respondents regarding their self-image and had little influence on the respondents’ lifestyle decisions.

'''ABSTRACT'''

The researcher decided to conduct this study while listening to the DZMM radio
program Talakan and its gay news anchors. The entertainment that the researcher got
from listening to the gay news anchors of the program and their use of gay language and
expressions in delivering the news motivated her to pursue this study.

The study’s main objective was to determine whether having gay news anchors
and using gay language and expressions in news reporting and interpretation influence
the audience’s perception of the news.

The researcher used qualitative methods to gather the necessary data for the study.
Three sets of focus group discussion were conducted among the residents of Barangay
Balong-Bato, in the city of San Juan to determine their perception of the gay news
anchors of the program and whether the “gay style” of news reporting employed by the
anchors influenced their perception of the news.

In-depth interviews with the executive producer of the program and its hosts were
conducted to determine the reason behind the program’s creation (and later its
cancelation). An expert on Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transvestite Psychology was
also interviewed to help in the analysis and interpretation of the reactions of the
participants during the FGD toward the gay news anchors and the gay style of news
reporting.

Two theories were used in the study: Stuart Hall’s Encoding and Decoding
Theory, and the Language Expectancy Theory. The Encoding and Decoding Theory
categorized the informants according to the three ways of reading the text, which in this
case are the gay news anchors of Talakan. The three categories were the dominant
reading, negotiated reading, and oppositional reading. The Language Expectancy
Theory was used to analyze and interpret the effect of the gay news anchors and the gay
style of news reporting on the audience perception of the news.

The study showed that the new elements in news reporting introduced by the
DZMM radio program Talakan, such as having gays as news anchors and the use of gay
style in news reporting, influenced the audience perception of the news in both positive
and negative ways. Results showed that while the impact of the news on the audience
changed, the credibility of the news remained the same.

Adaptation has become a major source of programming for television. Short stories, novels, komiks, and even movies have been adapted for television. The movie Patayin Mo sa Sindak si Barbara, produced in 1974 by Rosas Productions, was adapted by ABS-CBN into a television series, Sineserye Presents: Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara in 2008. Guided by Sicat’s (1990) conclusion that changes are inevitable in adaptation, the researcher set out to describe the production process of the television series, to compare and contrast the narrative of film and the TV series, and to uncover why such changes occur. Through content analysis of the film and the television series, the researcher verified Sicat’s conclusion. Changes in the narrative were in the form of additions, deletions, and alterations. Focus interviews with the television series’ director and writer helped draw out reasons for changes in the narrative. Aside from the interpretation of the adapters, the time of the adaptation, and medium differences, network management decisions and the audience and the advertisers also affect how the narrative of a movie can change in its adaptation into television.

The study examined the role and effects of communication mode-switching among the ePLDT employees. It inquired into how the use of the different communication modes have aided or distracted the employees in their everyday tasks and has made it possible for the employees to engage in communication mode-switching. It also looked into the effects of the Filipino Communicative Behavior (Lacson, 2005) and the Filipino value system on the employees’ mode-switching behavior.
The study used Phenomenology, Technology Acceptance Model and Deetz Managerial and Organizational Democracy Theory in explaining communication mode-switching. To better identify the dynamics and factors that occur in a switch, the concept of triggers were incorporated in the study framework. The incorporation of the FCB (Lacson, 2005) and the Filipino value system illustrates the effects and implications of Filipino attitudes and cultures in a local organizational setting. Two Focus Group Discussions, five Focused Interviews and Participant Observation were employed to gather the needed data for the study.
The study revealed that the employees tendency to do more tasks and to manage their work well by changing the modes and contexts of their conversation. Productivity and collaboration were better facilitated through mode-switching since it bridged the gap of time and distance as applied in a call center setting. The existence of workplace democracy is further viewed by the employees as their freedom to choose the communication modes they want to use and the ability to voice their concerns. Though limited in their exercise of freedom due to the set standards in a private organization, the ability to choose the mode to use has somewhat empowered the employees in their interaction.
The effects of Filipino value system and Filipino mindsets as evident in their communicative patterns and behavior can be seen in the way the employees engaged in communication mode-switching. Communication mode-switching tends to overcome the concept of “hiya” or shyness as experienced by some of the employees in interacting.

Macho Guapito : A discourse analysis on how the Colt 45 TVC series promotes and maintains patriarchy

ABSTRACT

This discursive study aimed to explain how patriarchy is furthered in the Colt 45 television commercial series. The researcher incorporated two theories i.e., Queer Theory and Social Theory of Gender. The method used was textual analysis. While several subordinate masculine qualities were shown in the commercial, hegemonic masculine qualities were still the ones depicted as the most appropriate type of behavior of men. Findings of the study were classified into physical appearance, lifestyle and emotions of men. While no subordinate physical appearance was found in the commercial series, some of their activities were considered to be subordinate. This includes being affectionate to the girlfriend, being too concerned with cleanliness and physical appearance and being too critical about fashion. The activities under hegemonic masculinity on the other hand, includes drinking of beer, watching and playing basketball, and interest in cars and sexy women. In terms of emotions, men who committed unmanly acts received emotions of dislike from hegemonic men. The subordinate members on the other hand, gave emotions of questioning as a response to the hegemonic members of the group. Based on the analysis of the texts, the researcher found out that the Colt 45 commercial series furthers patriarchy in three levels, namely: by further promoting the hegemonic masculine qualities, by attaching a stigma to the subordinate masculine qualities, and by killing off attempts of the subordinate men to continuously display and practice their activities and lifestyle.

ABSTRACT

Media, particularly television, is very powerful in constructing images on how we view men and women. Women, nowadays, are given more freedom to express and liberate themselves. But in media, women are still incessantly represented in traditional ways that favor male-supremacy.

This study focuses on how discourse constructs and reinforces the traditional roles of women through the representation of the five female characters in the adapted telenovela Rubi. Using Critical Discourse Analysis and applying the frameworks Post-modern Feminism and the Episteme by Foucault in looking into discourse and Political Economy in defining the character of television, this study examined the traditional and resistive social roles of the five female characters in the adapted telenovela Rubi. This study revealed that even if there was an attempt to represent women in empowering roles, they were still represented in ways that reinforce the traditional roles assigned to women through the years, thus verifying the existence of patriarchy in the discourse of the adapted telenovela Rubi.

The researcher recommends to conduct an audience study on the effects of the representation of women in the adapted telenovela Rubi to its audience, in order to find out if these representations are interpreted by its audience as oppressive or liberating for women.

ABSTRACT

This study explores the ideologies embedded in the websites and TV advertisements of the social advocacy campaigns I am Ninoy and Ako Mismo. Further, it determines the interplay between the discourses of these advocacies and their sociopolitical context. A critical reading of these discourses was carried out using the critical discourse analysis (CDA) method and was grounded on semiotic, linguistic and critical theories. The socio-political context in which these media texts were produced was considered in the analysis of the discourses of I am Ninoy and Ako Mismo. Results showed that these websites and advertisements were promoting “slacktivism”. Furthermore, it was also found out that the advocacies were being commodified as participation and activism were reduced to mere purchase of campaign merchandise. Ultimately, these media texts were simply reproducing current dominant social ideologies in the country such as elitism and commercialism.

E(FFICIENT)-GOVERNANCE: A Content analysis of www.makati.gov.ph and a Case Study on How Makati Portal Affects the Government Management of the City

'''Abstract'''<br />
This study examines the effect of Internet-mediated communication in the decision making procedures of Makati City. The city’s portal contains feedback-sending mechanisms that allow two-way communication between citizens and government officials. It helps policy makers gather more feedback from the constituents, thus, the drafting and passing of ordinances and/or resolutions involve greater citizen participation. This results to higher quality outputs and more organized conflict management.

This study uses quantitative and qualitative approach, and adopts DeSanctis and Poole’s Adaptive Structuration Theory. Makati Portal was the first developed local e-government in the Philippines. It was chosen as the focus of this study because of its exemplary application of e-governance, e-service, and e-knowledge.

The researcher conducted a content analysis of the website to look into the operation of Makati Portal’s function and features. The posts of the website users dated July 2009-February 2010 were gathered and analyzed. Focus interviews were also conducted among 22 respondents. Not all government offices are currently utilizing the website for feedback-generation but all of them disseminate information through intranet. The Makati Portal has limitations such as digital divide among constituents and officials. However, the website still has a great potential for becoming an effective channel for a more dynamic communication between citizens and officials.
A Case Study of the Bilog na Hugis Itlog: For the People or for the Network?

This thesis explores the different views of the audience regarding the advertisement Bilog na Hugis Itlog produced by GMA Channel 7 Television Network as part of their informational campaign towards the education of voters during the 2010 national elections. The advertisement was in a form of a song and dance number performed by the Sexbomb Dancers. This combination of information
and entertainment is the central theme that is explored in this study. Used in this study is the classic communication theories related to advertising. These are the Communication Theory of Lasswell and the Stimulus-Response Principle. The focus of these theories is the reaction or effect of the advertisement to the audience. An analysis of the song lyrics, the video components and the entire advertisement was done. Interviews were also conducted with respondents coming from different social economic classes and different age groups. While there is little difference among the answers across the different age groups, the big difference in economic status revealed a difference of perspectives of the audience.

'''Abstract'''<br />
This study examines the problem on how bloggers make use of blog advertisements to gratify their needs in blogging. The objectives of the research include describing the relationship of the bloggers and the advertisers, and explaining the processes involved in this phenomenon. Moreover, this study tackles the different uses and needs of the bloggers which are met or otherwise by putting up blog advertisements. Online focus interviews of twelve professional bloggers serve as the main method in gathering data. The Uses and Gratifications Approach was used to guide the researcher throughout the conduct and analysis of the study. Results show that the blog advertisements are essentially fulfilling the blogger’s needs by gratifying and supporting the four main media-person typologies which are the diversion, personal identity, personal relationships and surveillance. As for the social and psychological needs of the bloggers, each category has satisfied the blogger’s life with the use of blog advertisements. The five social and psychological needs are the cognitive needs, affective needs, personal integrative needs, social integrative needs and tension release needs. Through the results of the study, the researcher concludes that a majority of the blogger respondents make use of the blog advertisements as a primary source of income. After trying out blogging as a hobby or as an extra activity, blogging becomes their full time occupation because of the good monetary compensation. And from this benefit, all other aspects of the blogger’s life have been gratified as previously discussed. However, some bloggers still maintain their nine-to-five jobs and consider blogging as a secondary source of income. Since blog advertising is one of the popular phenomena today, the researcher recommends that future studies be done on blog advertising in comparison with the traditional medium of advertising on print, radio and television. Likewise, methods like focus group discussions and expert interviews are also suggested by the researchers to make a more in-depth study.
