The UP Statistical Society, established in 1981, is a well-renowned student organization in the University of the Philippines dedicated to promoting awareness and enhancing interest in the field of Statistics and aiding in its members intellectual and social development among the School of Statistics studentry and other sectors of the UP community.

== History ==
On September 12, 1981, the pioneer organization in UP School of Statistics was born. The Board of Directors upon its foundation was composed of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Business Manager, Education and Research Division Manager, Personnel Division Manager, and the Public Relations Division Manager. The first adviser of UP StatSoc was Dr. Ana Maria L. Tabunda. She is currently one of the Executive Directors of Pulse Asia and also a professor at the School of Statistics.

In 1982, Stat-is-Eeks!, an inter-university Statistics quiz show was introduced. And its very 1st champion was no wonder, a Statistics major, namely Ms. Julie M. Ico.

In 1985, the very 1st Amendment in the Constitution came about. The line up of the Board of Directors was changed and is now composed of the President, Internal VP, External VP, Secretary, and the chairpersons of the six standing committees namely: Communications, Education and Research, External, Finance, Internal, and Personnel. In the same year, Peggy Mae Hwang graduated as UP Diliman’s Valedictorian. She was the second Summa Cum Laude from UP StatSoc.
Also, the 1st male president of the UP StatSoc was elected in 1985 in the person of Mr. Nicco Emmanuel de Jesus.

In 1987, Stat-is-Eeks! became an inter-university Statistics quiz show for non-statistics majors and have continually drawn interest from the prestigious colleges and universities around Metro Manila and nearby provinces such as Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, and Pampanga. It was first held in the Nicanor Abelardo Theater.

In 1998, the 1st issue of the Alternative Hype, the official organization newsletter was published with Ms. Judy Mina as the first Editor-in-Chief.

In the summer of 2005, UP StatSoc ranked 1st in the Freshmen Orientation Program Committee Race with 255,168 points, almost 50,000 points from the second placer. UP StatSoc became the UP Freshmen Orientation Program Committee Chair Organization from 2005-2007.

February 2006, The first ever university-wide Stat-en-Ek-ek was launched. In the second semester of A.Y. 2006-2007, the UP StatSoc Song, entitled “From Now On”, was composed by the then applicant Ms. Erika Joy Valmonte for their Applicant’s Night presentation.

In line with UP StatSoc’s 25th founding anniversary, Mynard Bryan Mojica was named UP StatSoc’s Silver Scholar. He was a member of Education and Research committee and was a consistent university scholar.

In 2007, UP StatSoc placed 2nd in the first ever UPSTAGE, a dance competition among UP Orgs. In December 2008, UP StatSoc participated for the first time in AWITAN, a chorale competition hosted by UP KEM wherein UP StatSoc placed 4th.

July 14, 2011- UP StatSoc sponsored the movie screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at Cinemas 1 and 2 of Trinoma. Tie up organizations were OBEM, Pi Sigma Fraternity, UP KAS, UP GE Club, and UP Laya.

The [http://stat.upd.edu.ph/about.htm UP School of Statistics] was established in 1953 as the Statistical Training Center, then later as the Statistical Center under a bilateral agreement between the Government of the Philippines and the United Nations. Its primary objective then was to work towards the improvement of statistical services in government. Ten years later, the Center was formally turned over to the [[University of the Philippines]], and in 1964, the U.P. In 1998, the Statistical Center changed its name to the School of Statistics in order to reflect its expanded character as a degree-granting institution. At present, the School of Statistics offers one undergraduate program and three graduate programs. These are B.S. (Statistics) program, the Master of Science (MOS) program, M.S. (Statistics) program, and the Ph.D. (Statistics) program. Through these programs, the School of Statistics has produced numerous distinguished statisticians in various professions and is widely recognized as the primary source of statistical expertise for the Philippine Statistical System and Industry. <ref name="aboutschoolofstat">

It has since grown into a degree-granting institution whose mission is to advance the development and maintenance of a high level of efficiency in statistical activities in the country and in the Asia-Pacific Region through its academic programs, research, and extension services. The School maintains one of the best statistics libraries in the country, with new titles continuously being added to its already sizable collection. School of Statistics Library] is a college library which gives bibliographic and reference support to the school's program of academics in service training, research, and consultation. Its collection is limited to statistics and related fields like demography, economics, computer programming, social survey, etc. The library is located at the north wing of the new building of the School of Statistics (old CSWCD Building). It is open for service from 8:30 am to 12:00 nn. and 1:00 pm to 6:00pm on weekdays and from 8:00 am to 12:00 nn. during Saturdays. When the Statistical Center was established in December 1953 by virtue of an agreement concluded between the Philippine Government and the United Nations, one of the basic provisions of this Agreement was the maintenance and supervision of an adequate statistical library. Thus, the Statistical Center Library was Founded. From its initial collection of 500 books, which was largely a result of donations from the United Nations Technical Assistance Administration and from other agencies both local and abroad, the library has sought to strengthen and expand its collection through the years.

This challenging task was first entrusted to UP College Manila librarian, Perla Palacsil who was at the same time librarian-in-charge of the College of Public Administration and the UP Extension Division Davao library. Moreover, the UP College Manila staff, along with student assistants, serviced the UPCM library which was overcrowded and lacking in space. The STC Library, housed at Rizal Hall, shared its space with five other unit libraries -- UPCM library itself, Public Administration, Population Institute, Local Government Center and the Philippine Executive Academy.

The U.P. School of Statistics' [http://stat.upd.edu.ph/comlab.htm Statistical Computing and Consulting Laboratory] houses powerful computers equipped with the latest statistical software like SAS, SPSS, Stata, Eviews, and Minitab. <ref name="facilitiesservices"/>It is composed of three laboratories: Computer Labs 1 and 2, where classes are usually held; and the Faculty Lab, where the U.P. Stat Faculty members usually do consultation and other academic-related work. There are 24 computers in Computer Lab 1, 23 computers in Computer Lab 2 and 3 computers in the Faculty Lab. As the School of Statistics approaches its 60th year in 2013, a new building will be constructed to accommodate the growing population of students and the expanding research activities of the faculty. The 4-storey complex will be divided into two phases.

Phase 1 will accommodate classrooms, library, computer laboratories, conference rooms, and faculty rooms.

Phase 2 will include additional classrooms, training rooms, discussion rooms (for graduate students and study groups), research support facilities, two 150-seater lecture halls, 400-seater auditorium, student area, and cafeteria.

At present, the Architectural and Engineering Design (AED) is being developed and is due in April 2012. Construction of Phase 1 will start within 2012 to be completed by 2013.

In the meantime, the School will temporarily hold classes and offices in another building starting second semester AY 2012-2013 to give way for the construction of the building in the same site along Magsaysay Avenue.

== History ==
On September 12, 1981, the pioneer organization in UP School of Statistics was born. The Board of Directors upon its foundation was composed of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Business Manager, Education and Research Division Manager, Personnel Division Manager, and the Public Relations Division Manager. The first adviser of UP StatSoc was Dr. Ana Maria L. Tabunda. She is currently one of the Executive Directors of Pulse Asia and also a professor at the School of Statistics.

In 1982, Stat-is-Eeks!, an inter-university Statistics quiz show was introduced. And its very 1st champion was no wonder, a Statistics major, namely Ms. Julie M. Ico.

In 1985, the very 1st Amendment in the Constitution came about. The line up of the Board of Directors was changed and is now composed of the President, Internal VP, External VP, Secretary, and the chairpersons of the six standing committees namely: Communications, Education and Research, External, Finance, Internal, and Personnel. In the same year, Peggy Mae Hwang graduated as UP Diliman’s Valedictorian. She was the second Summa Cum Laude from UP StatSoc.
Also, the 1st male president of the UP StatSoc was elected in 1985 in the person of Mr. Nicco Emmanuel de Jesus.

In 1987, Stat-is-Eeks! became an inter-university Statistics quiz show for non-statistics majors and have continually drawn interest from the prestigious colleges and universities around Metro Manila and nearby provinces such as Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, and Pampanga. It was first held in the Nicanor Abelardo Theater.

In 1998, the 1st issue of the Alternative Hype, the official organization newsletter was published with Ms. Judy Mina as the first Editor-in-Chief.

In the summer of 2005, UP StatSoc ranked 1st in the Freshmen Orientation Program Committee Race with 255,168 points, almost 50,000 points from the second placer. UP StatSoc became the UP Freshmen Orientation Program Committee Chair Organization from 2005-2007.

February 2006, The first ever university-wide Stat-en-Ek-ek was launched. In the second semester of A.Y. 2006-2007, the UP StatSoc Song, entitled “From Now On”, was composed by the then applicant Ms. Erika Joy Valmonte for their Applicant’s Night presentation.

In line with UP StatSoc’s 25th founding anniversary, Mynard Bryan Mojica was named UP StatSoc’s Silver Scholar. He was a member of Education and Research committee and was a consistent university scholar.

In 2007, UP StatSoc placed 2nd in the first ever UPSTAGE, a dance competition among UP Orgs. In December 2008, UP StatSoc participated for the first time in AWITAN, a chorale competition hosted by UP KEM wherein UP StatSoc placed 4th.

July 14, 2011- UP StatSoc sponsored the movie screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at Cinemas 1 and 2 of Trinoma. Tie up organizations were OBEM, Pi Sigma Fraternity, UP KAS, UP GE Club, and UP Laya.
