UP Red Cross Youth

The University of the Philippines Red Cross Youth (UP RCY) is a university-wide, student-led, socio-civic organization based in UP - Diliman, Quezon City.

The organization's members come from all walks of life, and are students from the undergraduate and graduate levels of the different colleges of the university. The differences that arise from such a varied membership are reconciled under the organization's principles of Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. This diversity and multiplicity has served to power the organization's capacity to take on various projects and advocacies.

==History==

The organization was established in September 2 1992 by Butch Ong, Nols del Rosario, and Noel Quiba with close ties to the UP ROTC. For several years, membership to the organization was invitational. However, due to the need to promulgate the first aid and basic life support know-how, the UPRCY was opened for application. Since then, the organization has trained ordinary students to make a difference.

==Objectives==

• To work towards values formation and character building.

• To promote service and solidarity.

• To uphold the protection of life and the promotion of health.

• To promote national and international friendship.

• To disseminate the Red Cross ideals and the International Humanitarian Law.

==Services==

The organization promotes youth volunteerism and civic mindedness through three core services: blood programs, medical mission projects, and community development projects.

===Blood Programs===

The blood programs of UP RCY address the advocacy for greater public awareness of the lack of blood supply in blood banks in the Philippines, and the importance of free and safe blood donation as a means of addressing this problem. This involves organizing blood seminars, blood lettings, and blood awareness drives. The organization is also spearheading a blood network between university-based organizations as well as organizations and individuals that extend outside the university.

===Medical Missions===

The medical mission projects of UP RCY meanwhile address the advocacy of immediate medical relief to depressed communities. Medical missions are held at least twice a year by the organization.

===Community Development Projects===

The community development projects of UP RCY on the other hand address the advocacy for long-term and sustainable development in communities. This involves data gathering, community profiling, community adoption, organizing, and holding seminars.

The organization also holds relief operations for communities stricken by natural disasters.

==Development Activities==

Aside from service, the organization is also concerned with membership excellence, requiring its members to undergo trainings in First Aid and Basic Life Support. The organization also provides its members other development activities to ensure their holistic development such as finger painting, ice skating, jogging sessions, and other stress-relieving activities.

UP Pep Squad

The University of the Philippines Varsity Pep Squad, more popularly known as the UP Pep Squad or simply UP Pep, was formed in 1998 and is the official cheerleading and cheerdance team of the University of the Philippines. The squad performs at the halftime of the basketball games of the UP Fighting Maroons in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and represents the University in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition, where it is the current defending champions.

The group holds Elevate: Lift One Another Up, an annual dance concert and cheerdance competition in the University. The squad also performs at different university events and functions.

Several members of the squad have represented the country in the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea and 2008 Asian Cheerleading Championships in Tokyo, Japan. They have also been featured in ABS-CBN's 2008 summer station ID.

== Organization Profile ==

UP POLITICA is a non-sectarian, non-partisan (except when a unanimous vote from the general membership agrees to support an endeavor requiring the organization to have a stand), non-profit, and non-ideological Political Science organization based at the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, U.P. Diliman.

Its main purpose is to advocate the genuine study of political science as an independent discipline as distinguished from the customary conception that it is a pre-law program. To serve this goal, the organization possesses a training arm, which works assiduously to establish contacts with academic and non-academic institutions, and NGOs, GOs and POs that are willing to become training grounds for the members.

UP POLITICA adheres to the principles of democracy and social justice. The organization provides the proper avenue for the objective exploration of issues, information dissemination, and the utilization of political science concepts for critical thinking. One of the organization’s principal ends is to promote social and political awareness not just within the confines of the University but outside the academic community as well. In line with this, UP POLITICA hosts a number of projects that aim to encourage awareness among the many sectors of society, for the organization believes that awareness can somehow push a person to go beyond ideas and take a step towards making a difference.

== History ==

UP POLITICA is one of the youngest among all the Political Science organizations in the University. It was founded on 03 December 1993 by 20 young and quixotic Political Science majors, originally, to provide an alternative organization that would pursue Political Science as an independent discipline. Though relatively young, the organization was able to pursue its goals and objectives.

The first few months of UP POLITICA were characterized by zest and vigor. However, in 1994, most of the founding members graduated, causing the lack of stable and broad membership. Since the organization was still green and puerile, it was not able to achieve a complete takeoff.

In 1996, despite the aberration, UP POLITICA initiated a new recruitment process that brought about fresh and enthusiastic applicants who dared to join the organization and summon it from its long dormancy.

The year 1997 was the turning point for the improved organization, now with even more vigor and spirit than before. Since then, the Phoenix symbolized UP POLITICA, for from the ashes came a new lease of life.

The U.P. Lingua Franca is a duly recognized socio-academic organization of the Department of English and Comparative Literature of the U.P. College of Arts and Letters. It is composed of students whose passion lies in the appreciation of the beauty and power of the English language as it is used in literary and non-literary compositions, especially by Filipinos. Since it was founded in June 1996, it has never stopped fostering the growth and development of the study of the English language and of the literatures written in English in the campus. Its present members take on the task of continuing this legacy, promoting it to other students of the University of the Philippines through lecture series, published journals, poetry reading and other enriching and worthwhile activities.

The UP Lingua Franca is comprised of students officially enrolled in the degree programs offered by the Department of English and Comparative Literature:
BA English Studies: Language
BA English Studies: Anglo-American Literature
BA Creative Writing
BA Comparative Literature
However, during the school year 2002-2003, the members saw the need to accommodate non-DECL majors who are interested in the study of the English language and literature. Since then, the UP Lingua Franca has been open to any UP Diliman student who has taken at least 15 academic units from the DECL.

==History==

After the Language Society had gone inactive, a group of 25 enthusiasts from BA English Studies Program realized the need to form a new organization and spearhead activities that would encourage the interest and enhance the skills in language and literature of the students in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. So on June 22, 1996, the UP Lingua Franca was established.

The Constitution was drafted on the Wednesday after the day the UP Lingua Franca was established. It was implemented from the entire school year 1996-1997 to the first semester of the school year 1997-1998. During that time, membership to UP Lingua Franca was open only to language majors. However, the constitution continued to undergo revision to open the membership to all the DECL majors until finally, it was formally ratified on January 12, 1998 by the 52 members and two advisers—Professors Philip Belarmino and Topsie Ruani Tupas—of the organization.

Since then, the UP Lingua Franca has never stopped fostering the growth and development of the study of the English language and of the literature written in English in the campus through its lecture series, ACLE sessions, published journals, poetry reading and other enriching and worthwhile activities.

The '''UP Library and Information Science Students' Association''' ('''UPLISSA''' or '''LISSA''') is an academic organization based in the [[School of Library and Information Studies]]. It was established in 1962 as the sole student organization and student council of the then Institute of Library Science. UPLISSA was re-organized in 2002 as an academic organization separate from the Student Council with the objectives of fostering camaraderie and unity among members, promoting scholastic and socio-cultural development of its members and providing opportunities for members to lead and serve the institute, university and nation. Being the sole organization of the school for four decades, it has produced some of the country's best librarians and information managers and specialists.

==Mission, Vision and Purpose==
“We are bearers of light, guardians of objective narratives”… this is what librarians ought to be. Information seekers come to us and gain information, thus as custodians we are morally obliged to arrange, describe and facilitate access to bits of objective “truth”. Every element in our possession influences social understanding and learning, giving us the burden of maintaining fair and unbiased knowledge.

<blockquote>It is therefore the thrust of the university’s oldest Library Science Organization to assert the integrity of the librarian, all parches of truth and honesty needed by the information profession.</blockquote>

But not only do keepers stand on the precepts of honesty. The librarian should be compelled to break from isolation and confinement in the repositories of knowledge, the ivory tower of academics, and work outward; serve the people through the spread of information, facilitating and complementing the role of educators and teachers in the community. Ang '''UP Lakan''' ay isang panlalawigan, sosyo-sibiko, non-stock at non-profit na samahan ng mga Bulakenyong iskolar ng [[Unibersidad ng Pilipinas]], Diliman. Itinatag ang UP Lakan noong ika-22 ng Pebrero, 1988 sa pamumuno ni Bokal [[Ariel Arceo]].
