The UP Library and Information Science Students' Association (UPLISSA or LISSA) is an academic organization based in the School of Library and Information Studies. It was established in 1962 as the sole student organization and student council of the then Institute of Library Science. UPLISSA was re-organized in 2002 as an academic organization separate from the Student Council with the objectives of fostering camaraderie and unity among members, promoting scholastic and socio-cultural development of its members and providing opportunities for members to lead and serve the institute, university and nation. Being the sole organization of the school for four decades, it has produced some of the country's best librarians and information managers and specialists.

Mission, Vision and Purpose
“We are bearers of light, guardians of objective narratives”… this is what librarians ought to be. Information seekers come to us and gain information, thus as custodians we are morally obliged to arrange, describe and facilitate access to bits of objective “truth”.
Every element in our possession influences social understanding and learning, giving us the burden of maintaining fair and unbiased knowledge.

It is therefore the thrust of the university’s oldest Library Science Organization to assert the integrity of the librarian, all parches of truth and honesty needed by the information profession.

But not only do keepers stand on the precepts of honesty. The librarian should be compelled to break from isolation and confinement in the repositories of knowledge, the ivory tower of academics, and work outward; serve the people through the spread of information, facilitating and complementing the role of educators and teachers in the community. It is our fundamental belief that social justice will be obtained through defending the right (not the privilege) of each and every individual to be informed, educated thus enlightened.

This qualitative study aimed to discuss how the ideal body image of men is presented in different energy drink commercials in the Philippines. The researcher used three theories of media effects on body image perceptions: the Cultivation Theory, Information-integration, and the Social discrepancy Theory. A textual analysis was used to describe the images of men in six local energy drink commercials. Two commercials from each of the following products were used: Cobra energy drink, Xplode energy drink, and Sting energy drink. An interview was also conducted with male respondents to determine the effects of media’s presentation of the ideal to their perception of their own bodies. Based on the analysis of the texts, the researcher found out that the energy drink commercials perpetuate a mesomorphic (or muscular) body type as the ideal. This theme was found in all of the commercials that were analyzed. Also, it was found out that most men engage in body management activities to meet the ideal body type, as constructed by the society and promulgated by the media

ABSTRACT

This study offers an analysis of how the Filipino Youth is represented in the music videos of the contemporary rock band, Urbandub. It aims to examine and verify if representation is made through the aural and visual components of the music video. The researcher tried to explore the current situation of the music video industry in terms of the representations being made in the text of locally produced music videos. Stuart Hall’s Model of Encoding-Decoding Media Discourse was used as the study framework, which postulates that producers of media text are only interested in distribution and consumption rather than the transmission of meaningful and relevant messages. The study attempted to probe into this, determining whether the representation of the Filipino youth in these selected music videos were intended only for the promotion of Urbandub and their songs, but also for reflecting issues and experiences concerning the Filipino youth. The sole research method that was employed for this study is an interpretative textual analysis of selected Urbandub music videos. The lyrics of the songs were analyzed alongside with the corresponding music videos and their visual elements. Issues and experiences involving the youth were found to reflect on the lyrics of the songs. In turn, the music videos were able to translate and represent these issues and experiences of the Filipino youth visually.

Abstract

This study explores the Filipino mindsets utilized in creating profiling strategies within courtship, job application, classroom setting, and security setting, as well as their ways of presenting themselves with such contexts. This was done through identifying and anchoring profiling techniques to different stereotypes, values, and belief systems utilized by Filipinos in creating impressions toward others, as well as in managing other’s impressions toward them. Furthermore, this study delves into the differences between the impression formation and impression management strategies done by Filipinos within the four aforementioned contexts. These strategies, as seen in the related literature as well as the framework of this study suggest that the nature of interpersonal interactions within the four social contexts is associated with the impressions that people make toward each other. This study interviewed 16 informants and conducted three focus group interviews during the data gathering period. Three key informants, experts in the job application context, classroom setting context, and security context were also interviewed to get hold of information from professional sources. This study establishes that impression management of Filipinos changes according to the social context where they are situated and that among the temporal features of individuals, it is the clothing that determines the social category to which they belong to. One pertinent finding of this study is that Filipinos usually categorize based on one’s clothing in order to know his/her financial capabilities. This categorization strategy results to varying approach in dealing with the profiled individuals belonging to different social groups. Furthermore, the proponents of this study assert that in order to achieve a positive projection of one’s self, a person should convince other people that he/she is affiliated to an individual or institution who/which is highly regarded in the Filipino society. Also, as supported by past literature and the results of this study, Filipinos rarely exhibit rejection and/or aggressiveness in dealing with other people. Lastly, this study purports that pakikiramdam, importance of filial alliances, male superiority, tribal affiliation and respect are the Filipino mindsets that are involved in Filipino impression formation and management.

This study can be best used by dating counsellors, marriage counsellors, personality coaches, as well as guidance counsellors in universities so as to improve the interpersonal relationships among the main players in the four contexts abovementioned.

ABSTRACT

This project explores the kind of interaction that occurs between a deaf and a hearing person who both belong to one family. People with disabilities are often questioned about their capability to fulfill their role in a family, especially if they are the parents. There are already a lot of films and documentaries that tell stories of deaf people but most of them only showed the issues faced by deaf people during their childhood years up to their adolescent years (e.g. disability awareness, language acquisition, socialization and etc.). But deaf people’s lives do not stop when they passed the adolescent stage because adulthood and parenthood are bigger issues that they have to face. Hence, this film aims to depict this particular stage of deaf people’s lives through the characters of the deaf mother and her hearing son. Also, this project analyzes the fact that miscommunication, which is the biggest factor that creates conflict between the two characters in the film, can only be resolved if the two characters decide to change their perspectives and they both exert efforts to understand one another as suggested by the process of reframing which is included in the Interactional View theory of Paul Watzlawick.
Baban, Jesse Rey Logrosa. Wala Nang Next Time. University of the Philippines Diliman, College of Mass Communication, 2010. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis.

Wala Nang Next Time is a musical film that tells the story of a senior high school student who stands on a point where he is about to face a series of significant changes in life. It narrates the difficulties of making decisions that are influenced by moral, social, and personal motives. It is about mourning for what is past, appreciating the best of what is present, and confronting the fears and hopes of the future.

The film is an attempt to produce the type of musical wherein the numbers are integrated ‘naturally’ as part of the plot. The songs are strategically placed at moments where the characters feel heightened emotions. The film reinforces Martin Sutton’s idea that “the musical ... turns its wayward dreamers into conformists” (195) which mirrors the custom of an ideal Filipino setting wherein children are sometimes compelled to follow their parents’ advice despite yearning for a life they themselves envisioned.

Abstract: This study compares the play-by-play commentary discourse on the 2010 NBA Finals by ABC’s Mike Breen, Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy and Solar TV’s Alex Compton and Mico Halili. It discusses how the similarities and differences in the sports commentary affect Filipino audiences’ reception of the game. The extensive popularity of NBA in the Philippines, to the extent that local cable channels like Solar TV send Filipino delegates to the NBA Finals to cover the games live, has prompted the researcher to embark on the subject matter.

This study uses discourse analysis to extract meaningful information in the two commentaries, supplemented by a focus group discussion. Sports commentaries play a crucial role in the audiences’ interpretation of the game as sports commentators also exert their own meaning-making process in the narrative. Given that NBA is a foreign sporting league, this research analyzes how cultural differences affect the way Filipino commentators construct meaning around the narrative.

Young and Moral: A Content Analysis on the Coverage of Reproductive Health and Family Planning by Religious Magazine Publications for Teenagers and High School Students

In a recent survey conducted by Pulse-Asia Philippines, the majority of Filipinos are in favor of the Reproductive Health Bill, which serves as an ironic contrast since a large percentage of the population are also predominantly Roman Catholics. The Catholic religion is strongly opposed to the Reproductive Health Bill, especially since the documents of Humanae Vitae in 1978 and Evangelium Vitae were made.

This dissertation explores how religious magazines provide significant and contemporary literature on the Reproductive Health Bill, family planning methods and sex education to their teenagers and high school readers. Given that the publishing entities that produces the magazines and books connote that the content is set in a wholesome and Christian mindset, it simulates different scenarios and perspectives that can arguably be crucial to the development and enlightenment of their adolescent readers. Reaching out for a clue through a thorough study of the articles, brochure pull-outs, books and other published material that tackles the subject each company produces is achieved by cataloging content listing and then comparing on the bases of prevalent issues, quality and emphasis for the selected written content. As accordingly, new formats and approaches will be considered and presented that may hopefully advance the promulgation of knowledge and wisdom on values of conception, from the religious publishers to their young readers.

ABSTRACT

This study examined how Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash of 2010’s (PBB TC of 2010) categorization of poor and rich housemates affected the Filipino teenage viewers’ perception of their own socio-economic status. Through this study, the researcher wanted to determine how such reality TV shows affect audience’s perceptions of some aspects in life.
Previous researches concerning reality TV shows, self-perception, and socio-economic status were analyzed and evaluated to provide background information of the concepts tackled in this study. Likewise, Encoding-Decoding Communication Model and Social Judgment Theory were used as guides in gathering data and analyzing the results of the study.
A textual analysis of selected PBB TC of 2010 episodes was employed to examine the presentation of rich and poor in the program. The program’s chief story editor was also interviewed to find out the socio-economic measurements of PBB TC of 2010. To determine how the categorization of poor and rich housemates affected the Filipino teenage viewers’ perception of their own socio-economic status, focus group discussions were conducted with private and public high school students from Marikina City.
The results of the conducted research methods reveal that the Filipino teenage viewers of PBB TC of 2010 distinguished themselves apart from the housemates’ socio-economic status. Although the viewers admitted that some of the housemates’ socio-economic differences were existent in our society, they did not stereotype all rich or poor people as such.
However, although the Filipino teenage viewers were not able to identify themselves with any of the socio-economic representations of PBB TC of 2010, they were still able to re-assess and evaluate their own socio-economic status. By examining the major differences of the rich and poor housemates, there was a reinforcement of the viewers’ perception of their families’ perceived socio-economic status.
