The philosophy of the UP College of Nursing is anchored on the belief that its major role is to strengthen the capabilities of its individual members and the society as a whole, for them to realize their aspirations. This can be achieved through relevant education, research and continuing education and community extension services. The UPCN’s core values are summarized as follows: INTEGRITY, NATIONALISM, CARING, UNIVERSALISM and EXCELLENCE (INCUE).

==Mission and Vision==

The UP College of Nursing is the premiere nursing school that acts as a change agent serving the health needs of the Filipino people, and provides leadership and excellence in nursing development in the “global community”.

==History==

The University of the Philippines College of Nursing (UPCN) was conceived through a thesis presented to the Division of Biological Sciences, University of Chicago, by Ms. Julita V. Sotejo, entitled, “A University School of Nursing in the University of the Philippines.” An abstract of this thesis was enthusiastically received by Filipino nurses in convention on May 9, 1946, such that a resolution supporting the proposal was passed by the Filipino Nurses Association (now Philippine Nurses Association). After dicussions and consultations with then UP President Dr. Bienvenido M. Gonzales and members of the Board of Regents (BOR), the latter favorably endorsed the proposal to the President of the Philippines, so that on April 9, 1948, the University of the Philippines College of Nursing came into being.

The first academic offerings of UPCN in 1948 were the baccalaureate program, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) for high school graduates, and the Post-Basic Program for nurses who graduated from the three-year Graduate in Nursing (G.N.). In 1955, the Masters program, M.A. (Nursing), was instituted as a thesis course with functional majors in administrtion, teaching and supervision, and public health. In 1968, the Masters in Nursing (MN) program, a non-thesis course focused on clinical specializations in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Maternal Child Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing and Community Health Nursing, was added to the graduate program. In response to the constantly changing times and the needs of the profession, Nursing Administration and School Health Nursing were subsequently added to the specialty fields. The doctoral program, Ph.D. (Nursing), was instituted on September 27, 1979.

In 1972, the BOR merged the Philippine General Hospital School of Nursing and the UP College of Nursing. In 1977, the Health Sciences Center was created, making it an autonomous unit of the UP System. In view of its renewed organizational structure, the College of Nursing moved out of its place at the first floor of the UP College of Law in Diliman, Quezon City and joined the rest of the health professions in Manila where it rightlfully belongs. Today, it is better known as the University of the Philippines Manila, the College of Nursing being one of its nine degree-granting units.

Thus far, since its inception in 1948, UPCN has had ten (10) deans who have all given the best years of their lives to the College, in particular, and the university, in general and continue to be the inspiration and role models of the alumni and students who make the university proud of their accomplishments and contributions to the country and the profession:

1. Dean Julita V. Sotejo - 1948-1970
2. Dean Leonor M. Aragon - 1970-1978
3. Dean Teodora A. Ignacio - 1978-1980
4. Dean Dolores M. Recio - 1980-1984
5. Dean Aurora S. Yapchiongco - 1984-1990
6. Dean Leda L. Layo-Danao - 1990-1993
7. Dean Thelma F. Corcega - 1993-1996
8. Dean Cecilia M. Laurente - 1996-2002
9. Dean Luz B. Tungpalan - 2002-2004
10. Dean Josefina A. Tuazon - 2004-Present

And, after 48 years, UP College of Nursing finally has it own building situated along Pedro Gil Street, Manila, through the efforts of Congressman Rolando Andaya, Chancellor Ernesto E. Domingo, Chancellor Perla D. Santos-Ocampo, Dr. Napoleon M. Apolinario, Dean Julita V. Sotejo, Dean Leda L. Layo-Danao and Dean Thelma F. Corcega, Dean Cecilia M. Laurente and all the alumni, friends and supporters of the College of Nursing, without whose sincere generosity and indefatigable efforts this would not have been made possible.

It was inagurated on February 26, 1997 by Cong. Rolando Andaya, President Emil Q. Javier, Chancellor Perla D. Santos-Ocampo and Dean Cecilia M. Laurente

Through the leadership of Chancelor Alfredo T. Ramirez, the Board of Regents approved the naming of the building after its founder, Sotejo Hall and this was formalized on September 4, 2000. This is the first time that a building was named after a person who was still living

The College of Nursing has been designated as World Health Organization Collaborating Center (WHOCC) for Nursing Development in Primary Health Care from March 15, 1989 - March 14, 2001 and it was re-designated as WHOCC for Leadership in Nursing Development dated January 2, 2004 - January 1, 2008.

The College of Nursing was also designated as a Center of Excellence CHED-COE by the Commission on Higher Education from 1997-2002.

==History==

On January 12, 1911, the Board of Regents of the University approved the establishment of a course in pharmacy under the College of Liberal Arts for the school year 1911-12. On June 5, 1911 the course in pharmacy was instituted with an enrollment of 32 students. At this time, only the first year subjects were given. The Graduate in Pharmacy (Ph.G) degree would be granted after finishing the three-year course. It was only approved that the degree of Pharmaceutical Chemist (Ph.C.) would be conferred to those who have successfully completed the three-year course and two years of German. In 1913-14, the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy was introduced. Of the 32 original enrollees, eight were granted the Graduate in Pharmacy degree in 1914. Six of them continued their studies for another year and earned the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree in 1915.

In order to meet the needs of a growing student body, as well as the for better coordination of instruction, the Board of Regents, upon the recommendation of the president of the University, authorized the opening of on February 12, 1914 of a separate pharmacy school under the administration of the College of Medicine. Dr. Andrew Grover Du Mez was selected to establish the school upon the recommendation of Dr. Edward Kremers, the late Director of the School of Pharmacy of the University of Wisconsin, when the latter was requested by the Philippine Government for a professor who would organize the school. Dr. Du Mez was at first appointed to the Department of Pharmacology of the College of Medicine and later became the first Director of the School of Pharmacy. Three-year Graduate in Pharmacy as well as the four-year graduate of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degrees continued to be offered.

On July 16, 1914, the management of the division of pharmacy of the Philippine General Hospital was transferred to the Pharmacy School. This afforded the pharmacy students excellent opportunities in their drug store practice.

In 1916, Dr. Mariano Vivencio del Rosario was appointed the first Filipino Director of the school when Dr. Du Mez return to the United States. That same year, two departments were created: the Departments of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. In 1917, during the incumbency of Dr. del Rosario, the school became a member of the American Conference of Pharmaceutical Faculties later known as the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. A course in pharmaceutical manufacturing was introduced in 1917. It was a lecture-laboratory course and was open to both fourth year and graduate students.

In 1921, the Graduate in Pharmacy degree was changed to Pharmaceutical Chemist degree. In 1927, the undergraduate seminar and research course was introduced, the first that this course was instituted in the Philippines. The Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree was made compulsory in 1930 (the first students graduating in 1934). Also in 1930, the graduate course in pharmacy was inaugurated with two students who graduated with the Master of Science degree in 1932.

On August 14, 1935, upon the initiative of President Jorge C.
Upon the demise of Dean M.V. del Rosario in April 1943, Dr. Patrocinio Valenzuela succeeded as Dean of the College and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Throughout the war years, the College continued to operate until the battle of liberation of Manila when the building and most of the equipment, records and supplies were destroyed. In August 1945, a few months after liberation, the College resumed giving instruction in Pharmacy using the physical facilities of the partially destroyed Dispensary building of the Philippine General Hospital. It continued to be house therein until the transfer of the University to Diliman, Quezon City in January 1949. At first the College was housed in a 92 x 26 meter quonset hut till 1950 when it was transferred to the third and part of the second floors of Pavilion I of Palma Hall.

In 1951, the College instituted the five-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Pharmacy with one student graduating in 1953.

A course in pharmaceutical manufacturing was introduced in 1917. It was a lecture-laboratory course and was open to both fourth year and graduate students.

In 1921, the Graduate in Pharmacy degree was changed to Pharmaceutical Chemist degree.
The Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering offers three undergraduate programs: B.S. Mining Engineering, B.S. Metallurgical Engineering, and since first semester of AY 1999-2000, B.S. Materials Engineering. It also offers the following graduate programs, an M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, and both M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering. The MMME Department has many laboratory facilities for instruction and research. It has a pilot plant for minerals and materials processing and metal extraction facilities. It has also acquired world-class mineral and materials characterization equipment such as scanning electron microscopes, transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffractometer, thermal analysis equipment, surface morphology apparatus and hardness testers. There are also facilities for extractive metallurgy research and metals forming. Finally, there are many important pieces of equipment that can be used for pioneering local research on IC Device Fabrication such as single crystal growing apparatus, RF magnetron sputtering system, LPCVD set-up, ion-shower doping apparatus, wet and dry etching facilities, spin coating, four-point probe apparatus, ellipsometer, etc.

B.S. Mining Engineering aims to equip the students with the knowledge and special skills on excavation and working of mineral deposits as well as economic analysis of mining projects, the optimization of mining operations and the environmental and human aspects affecting the mining industry. B.S. Metallurgical Engineering aims to provide specialized training for students on the art and science of extracting, refining and adapting metals from minerals and other metal-bearing materials for human use. B.S. Materials Engineering aims to provide specialized training in the characterization, synthesis and application of engineering materials in support of the manpower requirements of a growing engineering materials industry.

The UP Film Institute is a product of the integration of two film institutions in the university – the Film Department of the College of Mass Communication (CMC) and the UP Film Center. The two institutions both had a rich history and a large body of programs which are very well appreciated in the film industry’s growth.

In 2003, UP CMC absorbed the U.P. Film Center in a merger between the center and the college’s film department into one entity called the U.P. Film Institute (UPFI), as it is presently known. The merger strengthened both units’ complementing visions in film education, production, and extension activities. Together, and interdependently, the two arms of the Institute – the Academic and Research (formerly Film Department), and the Theatre and Extension Services (formerly Film Center), co-opt the direction and sustenance of the institution.

The Institute is committed to nurture aspiring film practitioners by providing a well-rounded academic and practical training within the context of a culturally diverse and socially responsive education that the University provides.

Aside from the traditional classroom learning that are still utilized, the Institute also takes advantage of alternative methods and non-traditional learning opportunities as supported by its theater facility and extension projects. To primarily extend a form of expanded service, the Institute operates its own theatre of cinematic arts. Housed in Cine Adarna, UPFI’s theatre serves as a venue to screen films free from censorship. Cine Adarna’s screenings are programmed thematically for purposes of presenting a variety of studies and encouraging broadened appreciation of cinematic arts. Cine Adarna also provides a venue to showcase the significant works of notable and celebrated artists.

To this day, UPFI remains the country’s first and only internationally acclaimed institution to offer a four-year academic degree in film, being the sole full institutional member of CILECT: International Association of Film and Television Schools since 1984.
