==History==
As early as 1910, two years after the [[University of the Philippines]] was founded, psychology was being taught at the Department of Philosophy and Psychology, College of Liberal Arts. The Department was placed under Dr. Henry S. Townsend, an American who taught all of the Psychology courses being offered then, namely General Psychology, Genetic Psychology, Educational Psychology and Tests and Measurements. Soon psychology separated and became part of the College of Education when the college was created in 1918. Townsend became acting head of this new department as he continued to be the head of the Department of Philosophy at the College of Liberal Arts (de la Llana 1972: 4; Santamaria 1961: 13-14). Under the able leadership of Dean Francisco Benitez, the UP modelled for the entire country the curricular utilization of psychology in education. In 1959, the Department of Psychology was transferred to the College of Arts and Sciences, "an event which marked the weaning of the discipline from the apron strings of Education in the UP." (Lagmay 1982:6) The Department is currently housed at the [[Palma Hall Annex]] ([[PHAN]]) Building.

The BA/BS Psychology program provides the student exposure to the wide range of psychological theories and research methodologies which can be useful preparation for further professional training as psychologists, medical doctors, lawyers or for work in schools, industry, media, and other social agencies in various capacities involving research, counseling, psychological testing, personnel work, training and planning.

The MA Psychology program is basically general in character and does not involve specialization in any field of psychology. It is research-oriented and may be pursued either as a terminal degree or as preparation for the Ph.D. degree. The Ph.D. program provides the student the opportunity to develop knowledge in specific areas of study in psychology more intensively, where students should become well versed with the problems of their area of specialization as well as become familiar with the theories and methodological approaches that can be used to address these problems.

==Objectives and Mission Statement==
In consideration of the context of the department’s history and the events of the past few years that had changed the profile and character of its membership, the Department has formulated the following mission statement:

The UPDP aims to contribute to the science of human behavior and to apply the science to improve the quality of life. As such, it takes the lead in the development of Psychology as a basic and applied science in the Philippines and in the ASEAN, mindful of its role in the national development efforts.

The following strategies were further outlined to enable the department to achieve these missions:

1. To provide instructional, research, and extension services through:
* "State-of-the-art" instruction in degree, non-degree, and short-term programs designed for a variety of audiences;
* Innovative research agenda and methodology in the basic and applied areas; and
* Quality extension services.
2. To establish linkages with units in the U.P. System and with other universities, government agencies and entities, NGOs, communities, business groups etc. in order to:
*Create synergies and avoid unnecessary duplication of efforts;
*Keep the department continually informed of what is happening in the larger environment so that it can keep abreast with the issues involving the discipline.
3. To actively disseminate research findings, developments on theory and experiences in extension work to a broad but differentiated target audience.
4. To pursue non-traditional sources of support.
5. To explore ways of organizing its membership so that it can pursue the department’s mission with flexibility, efficacy, and efficiency.

To clarify the underlying principles that will be guiding future departmental decisions and actions, the following values were also identified as being central to one’s identity as a member of the department.

==The Emergence of Filipino Psychology==
A new consciousness labeled sikolohiyang Pilipino reflecting Filipino psychological knowledge, experience and orientation has emerged through the use of the local language as the embodiment of the psychology of the Filipino people (Enriquez 1982: 4-5).

Philippine Psychology as an area of concentration in the Ph.D. program makes psychology quite distinctive at the University of the Philippines. As a "special topics" course, Philippine Psychology was taught by Alfredo Lagmay prior to its institution as a separate graduate course by the University Council, UP on October 20, 1978. The course has since been offered by Virgilio G. Enriquez and Zeus A. Salazar. Aside from discussing theoretical and scientific issues, graduate students debated on social and political issues; the different psychologies - the "national", the indigenous and the emic; and the extent psychology in the third world is international or western" (Enriquez 1982: 11).

As an undergraduate course, Filipino Psychology (Psychology 108) was recommended for institution during the 1978 UPDP curriculum workshop. The University Council duly approved it. Jose Ma. Bartolome, at home with a few consciousness, was the first one to teach the course (Enriquez 1982: 11). Rogelia Pe-Pua took over where Bartolome left and faced the problem of articulating the concepts and methods of Filipino psychology with a book entitled Sikolohiyang Pilipino: Teorya, Metodo at Gamit (Filipino Psychology: Theory, Method and Application) (Pe-Pua 1982).

==Facilities==
The Department of Psychology is one of the few departments in the university which has its own building -- the Palma Hall Annex (PHAN), which is located between Palma Hall (College of Social Sciences and Philosophy) and Benitez Hall (College of Education). Graduate and undergraduate courses are held in classrooms in the second and third floors of PHAN.

Offices of the graduate faculty and of the administrative staff are located in the first floor. The main building also includes the Psychological Assessment Laboratory and the Human Experimental Psychology Laboratory. The Psychological Assessment Lab houses the department's collection of psychological tests and instruments for the measurement of personality, attitudes, cognitive abilities, and so on. The laboratory also includes facilities for individualized administration of these tests. The Human Experimental Psychology Lab consists of three rooms for experiments in cognitive, developmental, and social psychology. The Lab is designed so that it can be used for different experimental situations (e.g., interactive group experiments, individual experiments using audio/visual presentations, computers, paper-and pencil tests, etc.). Adjacent to the PHAN building is the newly renovated and expanded Physiological Psychology Laboratory which houses specimens and equipment for various forms of physiological research.

Other technical facilities available as adjunct to research and teaching include: a storeroom of equipment and instruments that include, among others, video-tape camera, video-tape recorder and player, slide projector, overhead projectors, audiotape player and recorder, simple chronoscope, classical conditioning laboratory, depth-perception apparatus, dexterity tests, maze tests, memory drums, pursuit rotor and stereoscope.

The department also has several microcomputers (PC compatibles) which can be used for research functions like data-analysis, timed stimulus presentations, and response time measurements. However, graduate students' access to these computers is restricted and has to be supervised by a knowledgeable graduate faculty member.

==Related University Resources==
The main psychology library is currently housed in the Social Science Section of the U.P. Main Library. Also available are relevant collections in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Resource Collection, the College Education Library, the Family Life and Child Development (FLCD) collection at the Home Economics Library, The Filipiniana collection at the Main Library, the Science Library, and other college libraries.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for training that extend beyond the Department of Psychology. Students whose interests lead them into allied disciplines will find valuable opportunities open in other departments and colleges in the Diliman campus like the Institute of Biology, College of Education, FLCD department at the College of Home Economics, College of Social Work and Community Development, School of Labor and Industrial Relations, College of Business Administration, School of Economics, College of Public Administration, and Statistical Center.

Graduate courses from these units may be taken as cognates, with the consent of the student's program advisor.

==Laboratories==
The UP Department of Psychology maintains four laboratories, namely:
1. Experimental-Physiological Psychology Laboratory
2. Psychological Assessment Laboratory
3. Human Potential Development Laboratory
4. Computer Laboratory
5. Human Development Laboratory

In addition, it has two Audio-Visual Rooms (AVRs) which are fully operational.
Experiments in the areas of learning, physiological psychology, sensation and perception are generally conducted in the experimental rooms housed in the department's main building (Palma Hall Annex). These rooms include one which is divided into three cubicles and which is designed to be used in studies where data collection is done with one or a few individual participants at a time. A second larger room used for experimental studies is found in the second floor. This room is utilized for studies where data generation is undertaken with larger groups of participants. The room is also equipped with a one- way observation mirror. Some studies, particularly those involving animal subjects, are undertaken in the Physiological Psychology Laboratory (PPL) which is located in an adjoining building (Solidor Hall). Animals are housed in cases in this laboratory as are brain specimens used in studies and classes in the area of physiological psychology. Conditioning experiments are generally done with Skinner boxes and an automated operant conditioning machine.

Psychological testing and assessment are done in the Psychological Assessment Laboratory which is found in the second floor of PHAN. This room houses the department's collection of psychological tests. The room contains several cubicles for assessment with the use of individually administered tests. Small group testing is done in a larger ante-room in the same laboratory. The department has continuously updated its collection of tests and has a good collection of Philippine-developed measures. The department, likewise, has access to standardized tests found in the Department of Counselor Education and the Library of the College of Education. Testing demonstrations are scheduled in the research room with a one-way mirror.

The Human Potential Development (HPD) Laboratory was developed in conjunction with the Human Development (HPD) Program (Ph.D. level), which the department is currently finalizing with the help of visiting professors from Kassel University. Workshops and courses in this program are undertaken in the HPD laboratory which is a multi-media training center equipped with technical and modern facilities for video-micro-teaching. The laboratory has the capability to produce video-clips and other didactic materials for special training as well as CD-ROMs for individualized learning tutorials. The HPD Laboratory is an intercultural cooperation project, based on a Memorandum of Agreement, among the University of Kassel , the University of the Philippines Diliman (Department of Psychology), the German Academic Exchange Service, Bonn (DAAD) and the German Association for Technical Cooperation (GTZ).

The department's computer laboratory is used by both faculty and students. It is utilized mainly for data analyses and production of instructional materials and publications. In addition to this, the department has ready access to the computing resources of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy which is housed in the adjoining Palma Hall's Computer Laboratory. There is, likewise, access to the Computer Laboratory of the College of Education and the university's main Computer Center.

==History==
The [http://stat.upd.edu.ph/about.htm UP School of Statistics] was established in 1953 as the Statistical Training Center, then later as the Statistical Center under a bilateral agreement between the Government of the Philippines and the United Nations. Its primary objective then was to work towards the improvement of statistical services in government. Ten years later, the Center was formally turned over to the [[University of the Philippines]], and in 1964, the U.P. Board of Regents approved the Bachelor of Science (Statistics) program of the Center. The [http://stat.upd.edu.ph/acadprog.htm B.S. In 1998, the Statistical Center changed its name to the School of Statistics in order to reflect its expanded character as a degree-granting institution. At present, the School of Statistics offers one undergraduate program and three graduate programs. These are B.S. (Statistics) program, the Master of Science (MOS) program, M.S. (Statistics) program, and the Ph.D. (Statistics) program. Through these programs, the School of Statistics has produced numerous distinguished statisticians in various professions and is widely recognized as the primary source of statistical expertise for the Philippine Statistical System and Industry. <ref name="aboutschoolofstat">

It has since grown into a degree-granting institution whose mission is to advance the development and maintenance of a high level of efficiency in statistical activities in the country and in the Asia-Pacific Region through its academic programs, research, and extension services. The School maintains one of the best statistics libraries in the country, with new titles continuously being added to its already sizable collection. School of Statistics Library] is a college library which gives bibliographic and reference support to the school's program of academics in service training, research, and consultation. Its collection is limited to statistics and related fields like demography, economics, computer programming, social survey, etc. The library is located at the north wing of the new building of the School of Statistics (old CSWCD Building). It is open for service from 8:30 am to 12:00 nn. and 1:00 pm to 6:00pm on weekdays and from 8:00 am to 12:00 nn. during Saturdays. When the Statistical Center was established in December 1953 by virtue of an agreement concluded between the Philippine Government and the United Nations, one of the basic provisions of this Agreement was the maintenance and supervision of an adequate statistical library. Thus, the Statistical Center Library was Founded. From its initial collection of 500 books, which was largely a result of donations from the United Nations Technical Assistance Administration and from other agencies both local and abroad, the library has sought to strengthen and expand its collection through the years.

This challenging task was first entrusted to UP College Manila librarian, Perla Palacsil who was at the same time librarian-in-charge of the College of Public Administration and the UP Extension Division Davao library. She was also assisted by Mrs. Asuncion De Chavez, assistant-in-charge regarding the maintenance and servicing of the Statistical Center Library. Moreover, the UP College Manila staff, along with student assistants, serviced the UPCM library which was overcrowded and lacking in space. The STC Library, housed at Rizal Hall, shared its space with five other unit libraries -- UPCM library itself, Public Administration, Population Institute, Local Government Center and the Philippine Executive Academy.

Hence in 1979 the SCT Library collection was temporarily and jointly housed with the College of Business Administration collection at the 1st floor of the new CBA building in Diliman and at the Reserve-Circulation Section at the 5th floor. The combined resources of the Business and Statistical Center libraries were organized into a BS/STC collection and housed in the 1st floor of the Business library. The U.P. As the School of Statistics approaches its 60th year in 2013, a new building will be constructed to accommodate the growing population of students and the expanding research activities of the faculty. The 4-storey complex will be divided into two phases.

Phase 1 will accommodate classrooms, library, computer laboratories, conference rooms, and faculty rooms.

Phase 2 will include additional classrooms, training rooms, discussion rooms (for graduate students and study groups), research support facilities, two 150-seater lecture halls, 400-seater auditorium, student area, and cafeteria.

At present, the Architectural and Engineering Design (AED) is being developed and is due in April 2012. Construction of Phase 1 will start within 2012 to be completed by 2013.

In the meantime, the School will temporarily hold classes and offices in another building starting second semester AY 2012-2013 to give way for the construction of the building in the same site along Magsaysay Avenue.

== Academic Program ==

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism is a four-year course that aims to develop entrepreneurs, managers and qualified personnel for the tourism industry. 

The program requires a student to take 47 courses equivalent to 150 units. Around 45 units are general education subjects (under the Revised General Education Program of the University) taken in service units of the University, such as the College of Arts and Letters, College of Social Science and Philosophy, and the College of Science. 

The remaining units are taken in the Institute and consist of 19 required tourism subjects; five tourism electives, six units of which could be for study of one foreign language; and internship of 360 hours. On average, this requires taking 18 units per semester over 4 years, excluding internship (with a credit of 5 units) during the summer of 3rd year. 

The subjects cover general management, accounting and finance, marketing and promotions, tourism laws, tourism planning and development, and courses that discuss the various facets of the tourism industry. 

A special feature of the program is the internship in any of the industrial sectors of tourism. Students are required to undergo 360 hours (equivalent to five course credits) of training in the summer prior to their senior year. By getting practical exposure in a sector of their choice, students can make informed decisions on their career options, which may be in the airline, hotel, resort, convention, travel agency, tour operations, national tourism organization, and allied fields.

==History==

The '''National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG)''' is an institution mandated to help in nation building. The college has spent almost 60 years of improving public administration and governance through education.

Established on June 15, 1952 following a recommendation from the Bell Mission, the University of the Philippines entered into a contract with the University of Michigan for technical assistance in establishing the Institute of Public Administration or the IPA.

Since its creation, the college has changed its name four times, from Institute of Public Administration to Graduate School of Public Administration to School of Public Administration to College of Public Administration and now to the National College of Public Administration and Governance. All these reflect the modifications the college made to make itself relevant to the changing times.

The first two directors of the IPA were American - Professor Lederle and Professor Heady, both from the University of Michigan. In-service and academic training were the two main educational programs of the IPA.

Three kinds of courses were conducted from 1952 to 1953, which saw the participation of a total of 2,500 government officers and employees. The academic program offered bachelors and master's degrees. Enrollment in both programs rose from 68 students during the 1st semester of 1953-1954 to "well over 200" per semester by 1955.

By 1954, Filipinos began to take over key posts in the IPA. The Filipino staff gradually took over and assumed full responsibility for the IPA when the University of Michigan contract ended in June 1956. Dean Jose Velmonte of the UP College of Business served as UP IPA Director but was soon replaced by Carlos P. Ramos.

Enrollment in the undergraduate and graduate programs continued to increase. The IPA conducted trainer-training courses and direct training for higher-level officials.

IPA was a center for research, academic and in-service training and consultation services. From the very beginning it was expected to extend its services beyond the walls of the academy and serve as a major resource of government.

Its status as a politically important government institution may be indexed by the laws which recognized its work and conferred on it additional powers as well as funds to carry out its objectives of improving public administration, modernizing the administrative machinery and increasing the capacity of the government to promote social and economic development.

In the 1960s, the IPA was made a graduate school, a school of public administration and elevation to college status. Assistant Dean Dr. Jose V. Abueva was appointed to oversee the academic program.

On its 10th year, Director Ramos affirmed that in-service training, consultation services or "extension work" was of equal importance with academic teaching and research. In line with its intended regional role, the Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration (EROPA) was organized in 1960 with state, institutional and individual members from all over Asia and the Pacific. The IPA was made its secretariat-headquarters.

EROPA also set up a research center in Saigon, a training center in New Delhi and a local government center in Tokyo. Director Ramos was elected as the first EROPA secretary general and was re-elected to this post until 1982. In a sense, EROPA merely capped the regional and international role that the IPA played.

The UP IPA was the 1st postwar institute of its kind in Asia. It was frequently visited by foreign dignitaries and students, and emulated by several countries in the region. In the succeeding years, IPAs were organized in Iran (1954), Vietnam (1955), Pakistan (1955), Thailand, Korea, Nepal and turkey.

The educational program of the college began to be emulated as well. Other institutions started offering courses in public administration with a total of 15 colleges and universities by 1971. The programs of the college enjoyed wide acceptance and support from national and international agencies.

Its services included professional and policy advice and technical assistance to a wide variety of local, national and international institutions. It was a resource not only to the Asian region but also to the regions within the country.

The events from the mid sixties to the advent of martial law provoked crisis in the role of the college vis-à-vis government. At its founding the college was a helpmate and adviser to government. In the late 60s, there was a segment of the faculty, which was more comfortable as critic of government than as its major resource.

During martial law, the college was critical and collaborative. It displeased the dictatorship with its studies of graft and corruption, its analyses of the personalistic and closed decision-making process, the tokenism and elite orientation on several government programs. However, it continued to be a source of ideas for decentralization and other government projects like the ministry of local government, civil service commission and commission on audit and many line departments and government units.

The stature and personality of Raul de Guzman, its dean from 1973 to 1982, helped a lot during this period. His recognized expertise opened many doors for the faculty and staff, and his amiable personality gave him and them room to criticize government programs without alienating their officials.

The 1980s led to many curricular and course changes to address the issue of looking into the roots of indigenous administrative thought and practices in the country. On November 26, 1998 the UP Board of Regents (BOR) approved the transformation of the college to National College of Public Administration and Governance.

This reflects the widening focus from governmental management to a broader concern of governance for public interest. Innovations and changes in the functions and structure of the college were made.

* The '''[[Center for Public Administration and Governance Education]] (CPAGE)''' manages the academic programs which remain as the core of the college. Its current director is Dr. Minerva S. Baylon, who is also the College Secretary and NCPAG Director of Studies.

* The '''[[Center for Policy and Executive Development]] (CPED)''' is the research and extension unit for national agencies, public enterprises and international organizations. Its current director is Professor Dan A. Saguil.

* The '''[[Center for Local and Regional Governance]] (CLRG)''' established in 1965 remains in the forefront of research, consultancy services and facilitation of learning in government for local and regional levels. Its current director is Dr. Remigio Eduardo Ocenar.

* The '''[[Center for Leadership, Citizenship and Democracy]] (CLCD)''' focuses on issues on civil society and democracy. Its current director is Dr. [[Faina Diola]].

A library that has the widest collection of books on public administration and governance supports these centers.

The college is likewise coping with the demands of information technology. Its website www.up-ncpag.org was recently re-launched.

On its 50th year, the college is conscious of its position as the nation's premier institution of higher learning in public administration and governance. The mission of the college is to strive for excellence and relevance in advancing the study and professional practice of public administration; in building capacities for executive leadership; in breaking new ground in policy and administrative research. It also serves as social critic, even as it provides technical assistance to organizations and institutions in state and local governments and to civil society.

As an institution rooted in the Philippines, it will build and nurture ties with regional and international bodies similarly seeking improvement in governance and public administration. As a learning institution, it continuously and critically strives to meet the challenges and problems of governance. In pursuing all these ends, we uphold the primacy of the public interest and high ethical standards.

The NCPAG values are service to the nation, public interest, and democratic governance. Concomitant to such principles it supports visionary leadership that is progressive and committed, transparent and accountable. As the NCPAG carries out the role of social critic it upholds academic freedom and an advocacy that is founded on social relevance and integrity consistent with the promotion of the public good.

== History ==
The CBA was established in 1916, initially as a school within the university. It has since been the leader in management education in the Philippines, not because it is the oldest academic institution in management but because of its continuing pursuit of academic excellence.

The CBA offers degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The Ph.D. program aims to train those who wish to be educators in the management area. The Ph.D. graduate is capable of engaging in academic research that advances knowledge in the management field. The MBA program seeks to endow students with advanced management skills while the MS Finance program exposes the student to a series of courses that strikes a balance between financial theory and practice. The undergraduate program awards Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration (BSBA) and in Business Administration and Accountancy (BSBAA).

Faculty members who teach in these programs are also actively engaged in frontier academic research. This is in line with the university's thrust of achieving the highest level of academic excellence and the CBA's role as a leader in field of management education.

== Administration ==
The CBA has 2 academic departments, the Business Administration Department (DBA) and the Department of Finance and Accounting (DAF), that coordinate to run the graduate and undergraduate degree programs.

The affiliate units are support organizations that provide various modes of assistance to faculty members. The Business Research Foundation (BRF) encourages the faculty to engage in research by providing funding support to various research activities of the College. The BRF also serves as an institutional base for faculty members who wish to engage in collaborative research with other institutions. The Development Center for Finance (DCF) is a training center operated by Finance faculty members and serves as the link of the faculty to industry practioners. DCF is a joint undertaking of the CBA and the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines Research and Development Foundation (FINEX Foundation).

The Institute of Biology was established in 1986. It was formed when the former Departments of Botany and Zoology merged together in response to the need to pool together facilities and the manpower skills necessary for the development of an integrated institution of higher learning and research in basic and applied biology in the Philippines.

Since its inception, the Institute continues to provide quality education in the biological sciences at the tertiary level while engaging in relevant research in the various fields of Biology. The Institute is also active in extension-work, regularly conducting various training/seminar-workshops on biological concepts for secondary and tertiary educators. It also maintains collaborations with government agencies and other academic institutions, both national and international.

In 1998, the Institute was declared by the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippine Government a Center of Excellence in Biology, particularly in the field of Biodiversity. An annual grant of P3,000,000 for a period of three years has been given to the Institute in this regard.

Ang Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas (DFPP) ay isa sa limang departamentong bumubuo ng [[Kolehiyo ng Arte at Literatura]] ([[KAL]]) ng [[Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, Diliman]], [[Lungsod Quezon]].

Itinatag ang DFPP noong 1966 bilang napapanahong tugon ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas sa pangangailangang humubog ng oryentasyong maka-Filipino’t makabayan sa mga estudyante ng Unibersidad. Para mapalawak ang kaalaman at kamalayan ng estudyante sa kultura at lipunang Pilipino, naging mga pangunahing layunin ng DFPP ang: pagpapaunlad ng wikang Filipino at mga wika sa Pilipinas, pag-aaral at pagsaliksik sa panitikan ng iba’t ibang etnolinggwistikong grupo para makaambag sa pagbubuo ng pambansang panitikan at kultura.

Tinutupad ang mga layuning ito sa mga programang pang-akademikong binuo at pinaghusay; publikasyon ng mga pananaliksik ng fakulti sa dyornal na Lagda, mga kumperensya, seminar at workshop sa loob at labas ng U.P. at iba pang gawaing extensyon ng mga myembro ng departamento.

Kabilang sa fakulti ng DFPP ang mga tanyag na manunulat, batikong skolar at kritiko sa wika, panitikan at kultura ng Pilipinas.

The Department of European Languages had its beginnings way back in 1910 when it was first known as the Foreign Languages Section of the College of Philosophy, Science and Letters. This section, which offered four languages (French, German, Latin and Spanish), was established on June 3, 1910 to prepare students for Agriculture, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Law and Fine Arts. In 1922, due to a significant increase in the number of students in Spanish, the Department of Spanish was created. In the year 1930, the department of Modern Languages, to which French and German belonged, was subsequently established. During the Japanese occupation, all students were required to take German. In 1948, Dutch was added as another language the students could opt for and there was also a time when Greek was taught in the Department. In 1958, the two above-mentioned departments fused into one and this department came to be known as the Department of Spanish and other European Languages. In 1960, the name was changed to department of Spanish and Modern Languages. In 1964, the Instituto Español was founded and the Department of European Languages came into existence. It was only in 1976 when European languages were collectively taught in the University under one department—the Department of European Languages, which remains its name to date. It is currently one of the six departments that comprise the present College of Arts and Letters, one of the three colleges established on October 6, 1983 from the three-way split of the former College of Arts and Sciences.

The Department’s initial offering was an AB and an MA (Spanish). In 1976, a new program, the Bachelor of Arts (European Languages) was conceived. The BA EL program attracted more majors into the Department because it gave the students the option to specialize in two European Languages, one as major and the other as a minor. In the present BA EL curriculum, the students may choose from two plans. Plan 1 allows them to major in one European language (French, Italian, German or Spanish) and minor in another (German, Russian, Italian, French, Portuguese or Spanish). Plan 2 allows them to major in one European language (French, Italian, German or Spanish) and minor in another discipline, such as English, Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, Filipino, Panitikan ng Pilipinas, Speech Communication, Theater Arts, Art Studies, History, Philosophy, Theory in Fine Arts, Reading, Teaching in the Early Grades, Language Teaching, Communication Research, or Tourism.

Now composed of more than forty faculty members most of whom were trained in various institutions in Europe and North America, the Department of European Languages was declared a Center of Excellence in Foreign Languages by the Commission on Higher Education in 2000. Today, the Department continues to grow and to undergo various changes in line with its commitment to excellence in education and to better serve thousands of students in the University who wish to learn Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Latin and Portuguese. It is the only institution in the country conferring a BA in European Languages, M.A. programs in Spanish, French and German, and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature.

The Department of English and Comparative Literature (DECL), College of Arts and Letters is one of the pioneer Departments in the University of the Philippines. Founded in 1910, just two years after the University was established, the DECL has since given birth to the College of Mass Communication, and the Departments of Filipino and Philippine Literature, Speech Communication and Theater Arts, and Arts Studies. It remains the second largest department in the University of the Philippines and is bigger than most colleges in the system. The Commission on Higher Education has declared it a Center of Excellence in Literature and in the English Language.

For almost a century, the Department has distinguished itself as the seat of English Studies and Comparative Literature not only in the Philippines but also in Southeast Asia. It is a leading institution in the fields of English language instruction, literary and cultural studies, and creative writing. Its faculty has produced a great body of scholarship in literary and cultural studies including folklore, language and literature, ethnicity, discourse on women, and a cross-section of world literatures, as well as creative works in both English and Filipino.

Among the DECL faculty are distinguished educators and researchers and creative writers, who have received national and international recognition.

Over the years, the DECL has been successful in producing outstanding graduates who have held positions of leadership in the various professions. The Department of English and Comparative Literature (DECL), College of Arts and Letters is one of the pioneer Departments in the University of the Philippines. Founded in 1910, just two years after the University was established, the DECL has since given birth to the College of Mass Communication, and the Departments of Filipino and Philippine Literature, Speech Communication and Theater Arts, and Arts Studies. It remains the second largest department in the University of the Philippines and is bigger than most colleges in the system. The Commission on Higher Education has declared it a Center of Excellence in Literature and in the English Language.

For almost a century, the Department has distinguished itself as the seat of English Studies and Comparative Literature not only in the Philippines but also in Southeast Asia. It is a leading institution in the fields of English language instruction, literary and cultural studies, and creative writing. Its faculty has produced a great body of scholarship in literary and cultural studies including folklore, language and literature, ethnicity, discourse on women, and a cross-section of world literatures, as well as creative works in both English and Filipino.

Among the DECL faculty are distinguished educators and researchers and creative writers, who have received national and international recognition.

Over the years, the DECL has been successful in producing outstanding graduates who have held positions of leadership in the various professions. Its programs offer excellent training in teaching, creative writing, and research. Many of the DECL graduates hold academic and administrative positions within the U.P. system. Others are well-equipped for careers in law, advertising, journalism, broadcast communication, public relations, foreign service and business.

For almost a century, the Department has distinguished itself as the seat of English Studies and Comparative Literature not only in the Philippines but also in Southeast Asia. It is a leading institution in the fields of English language instruction, literary and cultural studies, and creative writing. Its faculty has produced a great body of scholarship in literary and cultural studies including folklore, language and literature, ethnicity, discourse on women, and a cross-section of world literatures, as well as creative works in both English and Filipino.

Among the DECL faculty are distinguished educators and researchers and creative writers, who have received national and international recognition.

Over the years, the DECL has been successful in producing outstanding graduates who have held positions of leadership in the various professions. Its programs offer excellent training in teaching, creative writing, and research. Many of the DECL graduates hold academic and administrative positions within the U.P. system. Others are well-equipped for careers in law, advertising, journalism, broadcast communication, public relations, foreign service and business.

The Department’s mission is to facilitate access to the mainstreams of knowledge, to expose the students to different world views, and to turn out graduates whose exposure to and understanding of the greatest achievements of the human race in language and literature will be a lifetime foundation for being fully human, while pursuing whatever profession they may choose. The [[University of the Philippines]] School of Economics (UPSE), located at the UP campus in Diliman, was established in 1965 and offers academic instruction leading to baccalaureate and master's degrees and the PhD in economics. The School is the only institution in the country with an active and internationally recognized Ph.D. program in economics; a high ratio of full-time faculty with Ph.D.s; and a nationally unparalleled record of international publications in the discipline.

In 1999, the UPSE was designated the sole Center of Excellence in Economics in the Philippines by the Commission of Higher Education.

This department offers an undergraduate program under the College of Mass Communication. It was the first undergraduate program offered by this college. This program gives students a skill set that makes them ready for their profession. The curriculum for this program had been revised frequently to keep up with the technology available for students. Aside from being skilled, the students are trained to be socially responsible and very critical since they hold the power of the press. The Commission on Higher Education has also patterned other journalism programs with the curriculum of this department and named them center of excellence in journalism.

==History==
In 1959, when the Department of English split into three units, the Department of Humanities and Philippine Institutions was one of the new departments to emerge. This unit was tasked to teach art appreciation in the style of the University of Chicago. The pioneers of the program included Aurelio Estanislao, Eliseo Pajaro, Leticia Ramos-Shahani, Ricaredo Demetillo and Virginia R. Moreno, all distinguished artists and men and women of letters.

In 1964, an A.B. Humanities Degree was instituted.

By 1989, most of the members of the department were at the forefront of research in Philippine Art. There was a dramatic shift in art writing that had been focused on the fine arts. The study of art now included the creative endeavors of marginalized Philippine communities as well as popular art forms. The faculty changed its name to the Department of Art Studies to reflect the new approaches and paradigms required in these areas.

Currently, the Department of Art Studies administers three Baccalaureate degrees in Art Studies (Art History, Interdisciplinary and Philippine Art) and three Master of Arts degrees (Art History, Art Theory and Criticism and Museum Studies). It also offers three General Education courses, Art Studies 1 (Art and Society), Art Studies 2 (Art in Everyday Life) and Humanities 2 (Art, Man and Society).

==History==
In 1959, when the Department of English split into three units, the Department of Humanities and Philippine Institutions was one of the new departments to emerge. This unit was tasked to teach art appreciation in the style of the University of Chicago. The pioneers of the program included Aurelio Estanislao, Eliseo Pajaro, Leticia Ramos-Shahani, Ricaredo Demetillo and Virginia R. Moreno, all distinguished artists and men and women of letters.

In 1964, an A.B. Humanities Degree was instituted.

By 1989, most of the members of the department were at the forefront of research in Philippine Art. There was a dramatic shift in art writing that had been focused on the fine arts. The study of art now included the creative endeavors of marginalized Philippine communities as well as popular art forms. The faculty changed its name to the Department of Art Studies to reflect the new approaches and paradigms required in these areas.

Currently, the Department of Art Studies administers three Baccalaureate degrees in Art Studies (Art History, Interdisciplinary and Philippine Art) and three Master of Arts degrees (Art History, Art Theory and Criticism and Museum Studies). It also offers three General Education courses, Art Studies 1 (Art and Society), Art Studies 2 (Art in Everyday Life) and Humanities 2 (Art, Man and Society).
