==About ==

KAISA is a progressive political party and dynamic student formation that envisions itself as an agent of social change through '''competent student leadership''', '''proactive political action''' and e'''ffective social involvement'''. Through campaigns, services and activities, KAISA aims to innovatively promote and faithfully protect the rights and welfare of the students, and to provide them fresh and relevant avenues for participation in the community.

Established on May 5, 2005, KAISA sounded ''“a call to principled leadership, to struggle for the holistic emancipation of students toward greater social consciousness and responsibility.”''

KAISA believes in the timeless ideal of the UP student as scholar-activist. As scholars, UP students must fulfill their academic commitments and excel in their respective disciplines. As activists, UP students must use their academic excellence in a social context, by using their skills, talents and knowledge to advance democracy and bring about social change.

In addition, KAISA affirms both the pluralism of ideas in democratic discourse and the power of decisive action. KAISA wants neither to be bogged down by endless debate and academic speculation nor to be boxed by narrow ideologies and rigid paradigms. KAISA also affirms the idea of collective decision and concerted action.

In solidarity with marginalized sectors of society, KAISA pursues a multisectoral approach to raise awareness and inculcate in its members heightened social consciousness and a deeper sense of social responsibility. KAISA draws inspiration and wisdom from the experience of previous political formations: Sandigan ng mga Mag-aaral para sa Sambayanan (SAMASA) established in 1980; Independent Student Alliance (ISA) founded in 1987; Sandigan para sa Mag-aaral at Sambayanan (SAMASA) reorganized in 1995; Student Agenda for Principled Involvement (SAPi) founded in 2000; and CONVERGENCE established in 2001.

==Overview==
The UP Debate Society is a non-stock, non-profit organization whose purpose is to train and field students in the University of the Philippines Diliman to represent the institution in local as well as international tournaments. Its goal is to encourage the fearless and critical analysis of relevant issues in the Philippines as well as in the international scene. The UP Debate Society (UPDS) was established in October 1993 as a full-fledged organization dedicated to debating excellence.

In its 14 years of existence, the Society has received numerous debate and public speaking achievements both in local and international tournaments including winning the title as National Debating Champions of 2006.

Aside from the Society's long tradition of debate excellence, it has also sought to immerse its members in various socio-civic programs. Moreover, UPDS travels around the country to facilitate debate seminars to various high schools and colleges. In the previous years, the UPDS went to Ilocos, Romblon, and Banuar to facilitate large-scale debate seminars. In Metro Manila, the Society regularly holds Fast Forward, an advanced debate and seminar/workshop for both high school and college students. The Society also organizes Take A Stand, a basic debate program to strengthen critical thinking and public speaking skills among the youth.

In 2002 the UP Debate Society officially expanded its thrust by institutionalizing a project to promote the fearless expression of ideas, not just in UP but across the nation. Thus was born the Inquirer Inter-Collegiate Debating Championships, a partnership between the UPDS and the nation's leading broadsheet, the Philippine Daily Inquirer. In 2006. this later evolved into the Philippine Inter-collegiate Debating Championship, a truly national debate competition celebrating Filipino Minds and their Boundless Perspectives.

As it approaches its 15th year, the UPDS continues to get stronger and better at bringing pride to the University and advancing an informed and critical habit among the youth.

==History==
The University of the Philippines, as the country’s premiere educational institution, has maintained a long tradition of intellectual freedom. With the diversity of beliefs and ideologies that can be found in the campus, the art of argumentation has long been held in high esteem. Debating has itself become a tradition in the University, as members of the academic and student community seek to resolve their differences of opinion by presenting reasonable and persuasive arguments to various fora.

In such a vibrant environment, there were several unsuccessful attempts to revive the UP Debate Club of the Commonwealth era. But in October of 1993, one attempt finally bore fruit. Veterans of the Pi Sigma Open, an annual inter-college debate competition in UP, as well as several Speech Communication majors responded to Professor Ramona Flores’s call to institutionalize the art of debating in the University by establishing the UP Debate Society.

The formation of the Society was spearheaded by 17 individuals committed to institutionalizing the art of debate by establishing an official student organization in the University dedicated to its practice. Anna Alfaro was the Society’s founding President, while Jonathan Malaya and Katherine Napalinga were elected Vice President and Scribe. The Society’s other founding members were AA Albano, JR Basa, Che Botin, Quelly Cacnio, Rommel Casis, Carol Cezar, Manolet de Jesus, Dennis Edano, Charles Imon, Charo Logarta, Fred Makabenta, Cris Martin, Aileen Salonga, and Mildred Solis. Professor Ramona Flores became the Society’s first faculty advisor. After its recognition by the Office of Student Activities, the UP Debate Society was declared UP Diliman’s official representative to tournaments and competitions here and abroad.

One of the earliest achievements of UPDS was the establishment of the Philippine Parliamentary Debate Union together with the Ateneo Debate Society. Driven by their desire to strengthen parliamentary debating in the Philippines, these two debate societies formed their alliance to represent the Philippines in the Worlds Universities Debating Council, the largest debate organization in the world. Jonathan Malaya of UPDS was chosen as the PPDU’s founding chairperson, while Anna Alfaro was given the position of Minister for Human Resources.

UPDS has also sought to immerse its members in various socio-civic and outreach programs. Noteworthy are the gift-giving to young patients of the National Children’s Hospital and the involvement of UPDS in the Barren Tree Drive during the Christmas of 1998. The Society has also been active in donations to orphanages and children’s home, showing that its vigor is not limited to debating alone.

But it is in debating where the members of the Society have poured their effort and dedication, and this is where the University can be rightfully proud of its Debate Society’s achievements. Members of UPDS have thrice won the Pi Sigma Open Debate Cup, an annual University-wide debate tournament hosted by the Pi Sigma Fraternity.

UPDS has also regularly garnered awards in local and international tournaments such as the National Debate Championships and All-Asians Intervarsity Debate Championship. Both the debaters and the adjudicators of UP Debsoc have been recognized as some of the best both in the Philippines and in the larger Asian and international debating arena. UPDS alumni Dianne Desierto and Arnell Uychoco emerged as the champions of the 8th All-Asians held in the College of St. Benilde during May of 2001, while Tatsuyuki Munetomo was acknowledged as the top adjudicator of the 2nd Nationals held in Ateneo de Manila. Most recently, UPDS dominated the roster of the Top Asian debaters, having four UPDS debaters in the Asian Top Ten. All competitive UP teams also made it to the tournament’s Finals Series, while the Top Philippine Adjudicator is also from UPDS.
==Overview==
UP CINEMA aims to bring film to the frontiers. Established on the 25th of February 2004, UP CINEMA is a university-wide film organization based in the College of Mass Communication. The organization is born out of the desire to learn more about film and all its aspects outside just what is taught in the confines of the classroom, including the development of the skills needed in an actual film production and in the critiquing of films. UP CINEMA was founded by four film students – Charliebebs Gohetia, Dohna Sarmiento, Nicole Arguelles, and Davene Venturanza. The organization is composed of students from many of the different colleges, schools and institutions of UP Diliman including the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Home Economics, and even the College of Science among many others. The organization’s Tambayan is located at Plaridel Hall, 1101, Quezon City.
== History ==
<nowiki>Sometime during the closing days of the first semester of 1959, September 22 to be exact, a group of 15 young senior BA Accounting majors decided to organize an association dedicated to the enhancement of their chosen field of expertise. Despite the lack of support from their classmates at that time, they formed the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) with Antonio Lim as its first president. With the endorsement of Dean Jovina Lorenzo, the small organization immediately gained University recognition at the beginning of the year's second semester.

At that time, membership was open to all junior and senior students, non-accounting majors included. The application process was relatively simple: one has to pay a fee of P5.00 and fill up an application form—a far cry from our present screening procedures. Despite the leniency of the application process, the quality of its members never waned; it managed to outclass the other BA-based organization in terms of projects and the value of the association it bestowed to the college as a whole.

The organization never faltered to its pursuance of academic excellence. In 1963, UP JPIA initiated its first tutorial session to students as well as the distribution of sample exams. It catered socially to accounting majors where seminars in PICPA Activities and education films features were conducted twice a month, with the enthusiastic endorsement of the college administration under the helm of Dean Cesar Virata.

In 1965, the Junior Audit, the official news organ of the UP JPIA then, came off the press to cater to its members on relevant issues concerning the accounting field, as well as organization news tidbits and tsismis. In 1985, under the UP JPIA president Joseph Lim the news organ was given a facelift. The Current Account now covered not only the news on UP JPIA activities, but also of the different business sectors, highlighting the accounting profession. The news organ of UP JPIA was renamed "NetWORKS” by Emil Librea in 1955, then editor-in-chief. Eventually it was informally dubbed “Networx” as it is known today.

In 1966, UP JPIA, in cooperation with De La Salte University, launched the first National Federation of Certified Public Accountants in the country. With the endorsement of PICPA the Federation's membership grew from 4 in 1967 to 15 in the latter part of the 1970s. In 1983, UP JPIA was one of the six spokes (founding members) of the wheel that eventually became the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (NF JPIA).

During the early part of the 70s, the period when radical ideas and concepts seeped into the consciousness of the University, UP JPIA, under the presidency of Melito Salazar, Jr. (who at that time, was also the treasurer of the USC), inculcated national awareness to the UP CBA studentry, traditionally known for its bourgeois image and indifference. Under his administration, UP JPIA toned down its activities that were sosyal in nature. It was also during his term that the Junior Audit was used to exhaustively discuss relevant political and economic issues.

In 1972, under the helm of Dean Jaime Laya, the five-year Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accountancy was launched, and with it the dawn of major changes in UP JPIA's membership qualifications. Entrance into the organization was limited to BAA students, and batch range participation included a new level of membership: the terminals.

Martial Law temporarily dissolved the organization with all student campus associations. However, it was granted recognition after less than a year by the college administration. With the reemergence of UP JPIA, a new and more fervent spirit was brought into the minds and hearts of its members and officers, and dynamic revisions were made on its activities. A new organ for the organization, the Accountdown was launched in 1975. Application for membership was made more stimulating in 1976, and its financial projects became more monumental in scope.
<nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki>
Throughout the years, UP JPIA has consistently produced the cream of the crop among the students not only in BA.but also in the entire university. With the likes of Annabelle Po, Jane Ang, Edward Zsornack, Eamwell Tiu, Lizette Abelia, Eugenio Tan, Billy Soo, Ana Parco, Evelyn Kho, Maita de Guzman, Garry Ng, Evelyn Chua, Dionne Sanchez and Duke Bajenting, and most recently Grace Dumalaog, the endless stream of UP JPIA Summa cum laudes could go on and on, which proves that JPIA members are not slouches when it comes to academic excellence in the college. In the University level even, it is hardly equaled.

UP JPIA has also consistently exposed its members to worthwhile socio-civic endeavors. It conducts regular outreach activities, among which include tree planting sessions, Paralympics in Tahanang Walang Hagdan, Medical Mission, Christmas parties for street kids, visits to UP PGH and East Avenue Medical Center Pediatric Wards, and Saturday Schoo| sessions. It has also established the Task Force Street Children of UP Diliman. Its current socio-civic venture, known as the Long-term Educational Assistance Program (LEAP), involves giving scholarships to those who need it. Each year, UP JPIA, together with the Office of Counseling and Guidance, holds the University Job Fair, a task it has held since 1997. It has also been consistently in the Steering Committee of the Freshmen Orientation Program Committee, serving as Chairperson for AY 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2003-2004, and 2004-2005.

UP JPIA's tradition of excellence was recognized by the administration when it was given
the distinction of being the "Most Outstanding CBA Organization" for five years, the "Most Outstanding Organization” in 1987,1989 and 1990 (under the leadership of Pauline Cetera, Ruth Ciriaco, and Susan Lim, respectively). Again in 1995, under the presidency of Greg Yaw, UP JPIA became the "Most Outstanding Organization” in UP. In 1993 and 1994, with Dowa Romero and Ronnie Traballo at the helm, UP JPIA was chosen as one of the ''Outstanding Local Chapters” by the National Federation. In 1995 (with Jasmin Viculado as president), the National Federation recognized UP JPIA as the ''Most Outstanding Local Chapter. In 1998, UP JPIA was the sole recipient of the most coveted "Gawad Chancellor Award for the Most Outstanding Organization” in UP. Since then, it has been awarded "Most Outstanding Local Chapter” twice (Noel Hernandez-1999; Lorybeth Baldrias-2000, also Most Outstanding JPIAn), "Outstanding Local Chapter” (Jay Jay Chua-2001; Sierra Basmayor-2002), and the Guilder Magazine's Organization of the Year and Organization-Head of the Year (Sierra Basmayor-2002). In 2004, it once again received the "Gawad Chancellor Award for the Most Outstanding Organization”, and named as an "Outstanding Local Chapter". In 2005 it once again received the “Gawad Chancellor Award for the Most Outstanding Organization”, and being a three-time recipient was inducted to the Gawad Chancellor Hall of Fame – the first and only recipient of this elite honor. This proves that UP JPIA, indeed, is one of the best organizations not only in the University, but also in the whole country.

With a swift passing of the old guard, the glorious reminder of forty-five years of experence, perhaps the conduct of this organization's history of excellence could never be better concluded than the words of UP JPIA member, Billy Soo:

''''Long after the togas have been discarded, and the final debits made, JPIA will continue to go on and on, living a testimony of the stature of a profession whose time has finally come.”''

== History ==

The UP CINEASTES’ STUDIO was formed on September 24, 1984. It started out as an organization just for film students of the University of the Philippines Diliman. But later on, it expanded to include students from the College of Home Economics, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Business Administration, and other UP Diliman colleges as well.

Ever since its conception, UP CINEASTES’ STUDIO has been upholding the art of filmmaking. The organization is well-known for its continuous film exhibitions in the past years, and now for its tie-ups with the UP Film Institute in holding events such as the UP Film & Video Festival for independent amateur/professional filmmakers, the Black Beret Film Festival for student filmmakers, Russian Film Festival, Fade to Black, the 16mm Film Festival and It’s A Wrap.

The goal of the organization has always been to uphold cinema, particularly local cinema. Also to initiate activities that would elevate the knowledge and craftsmanship in our field of endeavor, and to promote fellowship among film students. And through the years, it can be said that the UP CINEASTES’ STUDIO has been steadfast in realizing these goals. In so doing, the organization is now considered an instrumental factor in the continuous promotion of film appreciation and awareness in the UP Diliman community.

The University of the Philippines Babaylan is the leading gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (lgbt) students' support group in all campuses of the State University.

==Advocacy==

UP Babaylan is an organization anchored on the belief that all persons should be equal regardless of race, nationality, religion, sex, or sexual orientation. The organization is aware of the state of marginalization of homosexuals in the university, in particular, and the country, in general, instituting activities aimed at fostering social acceptance of homosexuals. The Organization aims to serve as the medium through which rights and welfare of homosexual students are advanced and defended. The Organization unites with the various sectors of the university and the country in pursuit of a humane, just, progressive and democratic society. Toward this end, the Organization endeavors to create linkages between itself and other organizations and institutions which share its principles and objectives.
==Campaigns==

The Organization is engaged in advocacies that protect the rights of the LGBT communities inside and out of the University of the Philippines.

Currently the Organization is involved in the following Campaigns:

*Manila Pride March
*Philippine Anti-Discrimination Bill
*World AIDS Campaign
*International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO)
*LGBT Legal Aid Office
*University Gender Sensitivity Initiative
*University Gay Games
*UP Diliman Gender Office LGBT Studies
*Philippine LGBT Literature Research and Development
* UP Main Library LGBT Literature Section
* LGBT Literary Folio

==Activities==

In pursuit of its goals as a support and advocacy group, UP Babaylan undertakes a number of activities, to wit:

1. Support services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students;<br />
2. Conferences, symposia and group discussions on lesbian and gay issues;<br />
3. Lesbian and gay rights advocacy/lobbying;<br />
4. Gender sensitivity workshops; and<br />
5. Networking with national and international lesbian and gay organizations.<br />

Service to the University and Society
UP Babaylan has established a niche among the students of the University if the number of invitations to speak in symposia, conferences and classroom discussions is any indication. This is not confined to UP alone. Other schools in the Metropolitan Manila have invited the organization's members to speak before their students. They are also invited as panelists and resource persons in television and radio programs as well as featured in various publications. To top it all of, the organization is comprised of top caliber artists and expressionists.

Recruitment and Reaffirmation Week
The two week recruitment week takes place at the AS Walk, where a sign-up booth is usually being set up. At the sign up booth the members of the Organization never failed to entertain passers by with gimmickry and antics UP students love. During the recruitment week the members of the Organization also conduct random lectures on gender issues and information campaigns on the developments in the lgbt community. Flyers containing texts on the Anti-Discrimination Bill or House Bill 2784 were given to passers-by.

Applicants Orientation Seminar
A crash course on the history and legacy of the organization is given to the 50 strong applicants of the Organization. A series of modules is conducted during the Orientation Seminar (OrSem). These modules run from team driven dynamics to gender sensitivity tests.

Applicants' Night
A night full of celebration as the Organizations alumni gather together in a night of festivity. The applicants prepare a series of skits and playful melodies of dance and song. Food usually brought by the members and the alumni is shared by all. It is also during the Applicants Night when the applicants are given their Babaylan names.

Gender Sensitivity Workshops
A series of workshops focusing on gender, sex and sexuality issues is conducted around the University. Participants submit themselves to a grueling five hour intensive and integrative program facilitated by the volunteers from our trained partners from TLF and TFP. It is through these workshops that we produce informed and open minded students of the University. The last year alone we were able to open the minds and inform around at least 100 students from the Asian Institute of Tourism and Kalayaan Residence Hall.

University Educational Discussions (ED's)
Not far from out vision of a University free from discrimination and fallacies, we conduct a series of education discussion where the applicants of the organization and their peers are allowed to interact in our peer-facilitated forums and seminars. There were about 500 students from the University who attended our educational discussions. The discussions involved modules and task-oriented workshops which handled issues on the following topics:

* HIV / AIDS
* Vagrancy Law
* Anti-Discrimination Bill
o House Bill 2784 (Cong. Loretta Rosales)
o House Bill 9095 (Cong. Loretta Rosales)
o Senate Bill 1863 (Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago)
* Gay Lingo
* University Politics / SAMASA

Androgyny
ANDROGYNY is the culminating activity of a month long calendar of events geared towards the celebration of Babaylan's anniversary. It is also annual event anticipated by both the UP community and the community at large from all walks of life. It is basically a motley of art expressions in dance, songs, theater and comedy showcasing top rate entertainment. Featured in the performance are the members of the organization who, through the years, have honed their respective talents under the auspices of noted artists in the various fields of the performing arts.

Lantern Parade
Aside from the lantern entries from the College of Fine Arts, what else is highly anticipated during the Lantern Parade? Yes, you are right, it can only be Babaylan.
The yearly participation of Babaylan raises controversies as we never fail to make statements and leave the audience in awe. Always clothed in habiliments of vivid expressions for anti-discrimination and strong sense of Christmas spirit, Babaylan

Festibam
It was National Lesbian Day. For seven years now the local LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender) community has been celebrating Lesbian Day and each year happens with a different concept. The 7th year was celebrated in a complete festive mood. There was a bazaar and an exhibit. The challenge for the participant-organizations was how to make each booth particularly interesting to the general public passing-by.

Festibam was a 100%-out-and-proud day for Filipino lesbians. The lesbian organizers chose a strategic venue where the general public would have a glimpse of our community. Our lesbian egos were bared to confront the wits of the morning joggers and afternoon strollers. And this challenge was suffice to expose in exponential degrees of how the modern Filipino lesbian looks like and acts in public.

Pride March – Philippines
The whole world danced in one song. UP Babaylan helped TFP, the official organizer of Pride March Philippines, through manpower and ideas on how the Pride March this year should be celebrated. UP Babaylan will be spearheading the student and academic arm of Task Force Pride March. We will be in charge of the alliance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered student organizations in the Philippines, a position we highly humble ourselves of.

UP Fair
The yearly event of the University was once again supported by the Organization by hosting a booth during the six day celebration. We sold food and beverages from which the proceeds will go to financing our projects.

USC Elections
The University Student Council Election is a very humbling experience for the organization. It also serves as our gauge to the level of the University’s acceptance of our LGBT community. The organization received numerous criticisms and a continuous flow of disrespectful articles from a student publication, but we never cowered before them. We remained proud of our lineage and legacy as our alumni were at their times. As anti-government student organizations continued to feed and instill homophobia in the minds of the University’s scholars, we remained clear with our goal, we remained focused on our ideals, and that is to win the elections fair and square. We are proud that we ran the past elections not at the expense of other candidates but with only our vision steadily lifting the butterfly wings of our ideals.

* HIV / AIDS
* Vagrancy Law
* Anti-Discrimination Bill
o House Bill 2784 (Cong. Loretta Rosales)
o House Bill 9095 (Cong. Loretta Rosales)
o Senate Bill 1863 (Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago)
* Gay Lingo
* University Politics / SAMASA

College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association Food Center or CASAA is the food court located just across the street from the East Wing of the Palma Hall or A. S.

There are eight different establishments found inside CASAA: Gloria's Fastfood (which has two stalls right across from each other), Pasta House, Special Treats, Chinatown, Mongolian Grill, Sizzler, Bowl and Platter, the Soda Fountain, which serves only soft drinks and ice cream.

Customers can choose from different kinds of food here. There are light meals served by some stalls. For instance, Gloria's fastfood serves sandwiches. Pasta House, aside from pasta itself, serves quesadillas and burritos. On the other hand, of course there are meals for those who are really hungry. Mongolian Grill serves bowls of seafood, chicken and beef, where in true Mongolian fashion, customers can actually put together their own meal choosing from a variety of toppings, and on the teriyaki and oyster sauce.

==History==
The UP Advertising Core or UP AdCore, UP's first and premier advertising organization based in the College of Business Administration. Launched at the start of the Academic Year 2006-2007, its formation began when the lack of a business-based advertising organization in the university was identified. UP AdCore was founded to respond to the growing number of students interested in the field of advertising. It is an organization dedicated to promoting awareness on effective and responsible advertising to the Filipino youth.

==The Organization==

The University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students, otherwise known as the UP ALCHEMES, was created to promote academic and leadership excellence and to foster camaraderie and goodwill among Chemical Engineering majors and students of diverse cultural profiles in the University.

True to its name, the organization’s academic excellence has been very well-proven over the years as it has contributed a number of topnotchers in the board exams, with three of its alumni bagging the top spots of the recently concluded 2007 Chemical Engineering Board Examinations, as well as outstanding contestants in PIChE Quiz Bowl. UP ALCHEMES has never failed to produce magna cum laude and cum laude graduates since its existence.

In 2005, the organization was recognized by the National Youth Commission as one of the best organizations of the National Capital Region after being selected as finalist of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) in the region. Now on its ninth year, it has undeniably established its name and gained integrity and respect that is comparable to, sometimes even surpasses, other organizations much older than UP ALCHEMES.

Not only has the organization excelled in studies. The UP ALCHEMES is also a cornucopia of talents and interests, a home to countless singers, dancers, stage performers, trivia buff, academic achievers, team leaders, musicians, artists and writers, to name a few. It has also produced great leaders in the Engineering Student Council, credible editors in the Engineering Logscript and the Reactor, and winning teams in the annual Marketing Congress. Its members are also known to be formidable contenders in various quiz shows, scrabble tournaments, singing contests, and battle of the bands. The ALCHEMISTS, above all these, maintain a cheerful, approachable, and humble personality thus making them truly unique and exceptional individuals.

Since its birth on January 13, 1999, the league has been providing services not only to the Chemical Engineering Department and to the College of Engineering but also to UP and to the Filipino society thru its various activities like the Inter-High School Research Fair, College Entrance Exam Review Series (CEERS), the Academic League Leader Quiz Show (ALL), Software Application Protocol (S@P), Chemistry and Math Tutorials, Outreach Program, Medical Mission, and ACLE.

==History==
'''
History of UP ALCHEMES'''

By Markku Seguerra (September 1999)

The idea of putting up a Chemical Engineering org was conceived about a year ago. Back then, a number of ChE juniors popped the thought of forming a group that would represent them and their beliefs as chemical engineering students. Incidentally, this group would be the second ChE org in the university. The idea grew and soon many people from the same batch were into it.

Various names for soon-to-be-org were suggested, ranging from the nationalist KIK (Kapisanan ng mga Inhinyero sa Kemika), to the medieval-sounding ALCHEMIST. After numerous and tedious discussions, arguments, chikahan and what have you, most of the founding members decided on ALCHEMES. Rooting from Alchemy, this name bears a more contemporary meaning (two, actually). To some, it is Alliance of Chemical Engineering Students. However, it has been established to Academic League of chemical Engineering Students. Quite deep, isn’t it?

Since last, quite a number of meetings have been held regarding the formation of the organization. Some of these were productive, but there were some whose total number of attendees could hardly fill half of the typical Engineering classroom. After a few more months of obscurity, the group increased in number and the younger batches joined in. But due to the uncertainty of the organization’s recognition, there were some who simply just let their beliefs fade away and wandered to other pastures. But there were those who just wouldn’t give up, who always believed in what a group of brilliant young minds could do, uncertain the future may have seemed. These are the very same people who comprise today’s UP ALCHEMES. As of last count, there are about 60 members, considered the founding members.

Presently, the org is one of the many in the College of Engineering. The road to recognition was not an easy one. Of course there was an opposition to the idea of another ChE org, but after one year of unrelenting effort, here we are. UP ALCHEMES currently has no tambayan to its name, since the college only gives tambayans to orgs after at least a year of probationary status after they’ve proven their worth.

For now, we’re just happy to be recognized. A tambayan is yet another living. (As they say, patience is a virtue.) Next semester, the org will hopefully be accepting applicants. Just keep posted. For the meantime, live life.

==Mission and Vision==

'''MISSION'''

The University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students (UP ALCHEMES) aims to promote academic excellence among its members and assist them in their pursuit of higher scholastic achievements. It serves as a forum and venue for the exchange of ideas and interests and development of camaraderie among Chemical Engineering majors. The organization fosters holistic growth and development of its members through relevant and worthwhile programs and projects that assist and support its members in preparation of their professional career. Also, UP ALCHEMES organizes activities that are geared towards the reiteration of the importance of our environment.

'''VISION'''

The UP ALCHEMES strives to be recognized as among the best student organizations in the University of the Philippines in terms of academic excellence, holistic growth, leadership and professionalism. As such, the UP ALCHEMES will continuously contribute highly competent and professional chemical engineers in the country, provide service to the University and community, and will continue to conduct activities with the highest possible professional, socio-civic, and environmental standards.

The UP ALCHEMES instills to its members the following core values:

'''S''' SERVICE over PRESTIGE

'''H''' HUMILITY over TENACITY

'''A''' ACADEMICS over ASSOCIATION

'''P''' PROFESSIONALISM over PRIDE

'''E''' EXCELLENCE over PERFECTION

==Committees==

The organization is divided into 6 committees, each with its own roles, responsibilities, activities and representation in the Executive Committee.

'''Academics'''

The Academics Committee is directly responsible in organizing projects and activities that foster academic excellence of the members of the organization. Tutorials and seminars are the major means. It is also responsible in the acquisition and safekeeping of academic publications and other media, such as sample exams. Moreover, it provides the members a venue to discover the art in the science of studying and the science in the art of learning.

Some major activities: CEERS (College Entrance Examination Review Series), Research Fair, S@P (Software Application Protocol)

Current Executive Officer: John Kim Redecio

'''
External Affairs and Publications'''

Since the organization’s establishment nine years ago, the committee more commonly known as exte has evolved just about as much as the organization has.
Initially confined to the tasks set by the constitution, exte has been an effective publications and communications committee. One can say that the committee was made specifically for PR (Press Relations). But over the years, the committee has been the forerunner of most of the organizations projects that are geared towards community and environmental service.
Set on fulfilling the roles of the org established by the constitution, the external affairs committee has undertaken the organization of a wide range of activities that cater to the members, the student body, the department, the college, the university, and the community outside of UP. These activities include the following:

* Communication with the University Student Council for various University activities
o Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE)
o Freshman Orientation Program (FOP)
o University Fair
* Environmental Programs
o Concert for a Cause
o Emission Testing
o Environmental awareness talks (via ACLE)
* Event tie-ups with other organizations
* Maintenance of the organization publication (PURGED!)
* Outreaches and Social Service events
o Book Drives
o Home Building
o Medical Mission
o Orphanage Visits
o Visits to Homes for the Aged
* Alumni Relations
o Alumni Homecomings
o Communication with the UP ALCHEMES Alumni Association (UPAA)
o Communication with the UP Alumni Engineers (UPAE)

Although not entirely true, the committee has more often been stereotyped as one exclusively for those with good PR and people skills. But each exte member is encouraged to take an active part in all of the organization’s activities and is expected, by the end of his/her stay in the university, to have the confidence more often required from exte members than other members of the org.
Exte strives to create a venue to make a difference in the community and in members of the organization, through various activities, sticking to the organization’s motto, “make a difference break free!”
Current Executive Officer: Julie Anne del Rosario

'''Finance'''

The finance committee, as per the organization’s constitution, is responsible for the organization’s ventures in fundraising, and is accountable to all financial collections, transactions, purchases and safekeeping within the organization. The committee also manages the budget allocations for the various organization functions, upon approval of the Executive Council.
Over the years, the committee has organized many fundraising events and activities, catering to various individuals. For the Academic Year 2007-2008, the Finance committee has planned and managed a number of fundraisers, including clothing and book sales, food booths, movie screenings etc. For the next few years, the committee is looking forward to arranging more events, and the formation of the Grand Marketing Package for potential sponsors of the organization’s events.

Current Executive Officer: Junelle Llorente

'''Internal Affairs'''

The Internal Affairs Committee is responsible in monitoring the performance of the resident members regarding to the organization’s activities. The primary responsibility is to keep an aye on the performance of the members as an affiliate of the organization, especially their part on the organization’s activities. The committee deals with the internal concerns of the organization, most especially its members. Aside from this, the committee also aims to strengthen the bonds between the members. The committee is subdivided into to two groups, the Application and recruitment committee and the Human Resources Committee.
As the name says the Application and Recruitment committee is in charge in recruiting possible addition to the growing members of the organization. The entire application process is also their responsibility. The application is done every semester which is headed by the assigned application head. Sign-up booths are being put up at the different buildings within the campus, for the interest students to sign-up their names. Orientation is being done to welcome the applicants, and to give them an overview of what the organization is and how it feels like to be a part of it. During the application process the committee assigns the interns to their respective prefer committee as to their possible contribution as a member of the organization, this will have them a taste of being a member. They will be placed to the field they think they are good at, by doing this, it will help them in preparation to their professional career. The application process is something to look at every year. Most especially the intern’s talent’s night, which is the night where the applicants showcases their talents. Guiding the applicant is not only the app com’s responsibility, it is everyone’s duty to help them, to comfort them and to make our org feels like a home for them.

The Human resources committee deals with the issues of the residing members. Figuring out ways that could probably bring out the organization’s spirit in every member is what they usually do. As a member of an organization, it is every ones duty to take part in the activities and projects of the organization. Though there are some who don’t do their part, they are still seeing as a member, yet they still need to be boost up for them to realize what they could do for the org, and this is the duty of the human resources committee. Aside from this other issues that goes on with in the tambayan is being resolved by the HR committee.

The committee is also in charge in the reaffirmation of the members which is done every year. Updating all membership records is the duty of the executive officer meaning it should be kept by the committee. Even the records of the alumni are still kept by the committee. The committee is also in charge in the recognition of the members, which is done annually.

Current Executive Officer: Shyne Marie Baticulon

'''Logistics, Sports and Recreation'''

The role of LSR, as officially stated in the constitution, can be summarized into four: maintenance of the property and equipment of the organization; inventory of all belongings of the organization during the General Assembly; manpower for sports and social events participated by the society; and the arrangement of venue for the organization’s meetings and other social functions.
Over the years, LSR has proven its importance beyond simply keeping the tambayan clean. LSR has been responsible for the safe-keeping of the organization’s property as well as the development of the organization’s reputation in sports-related events held during the Engineering Week.
LSR also helps the organization raise funds through the Fun(d) Run activity. Other sponsored activities such as ICOC and X-Day helps build team work and coordination within members of each committee. These activities test and strengthen the member’s unison, ingenuity and management capability; and by doing so, enable each member to work effectively with the other members of his/her committee. LSR also sponsors activities such as Sports Clinic for members, alumni, and applicants and EDGE.
The committee shows its dedication in pursuing the organizations principles and objectives through practicing its responsibilities and taking part in other organizational concerns. Undoubtedly, Logistics, Sports and Recreation Committee contributes for the betterment and advancement of each individual member and the organization as a whole.

Current Executive Officer: Marc Adrian dela Rosa

'''Secretariat'''

The Secretariat Committee is the safe-keeper of all records of the organization. These records include (but are not restricted to) University and College recognition forms, membership and application forms, minutes of Executive Council meetings and General Assemblies, and event documentations.

In addition, the committee is also responsible for official correspondence to the University and College Administrations, as well as to the University and Engineering Student Councils and the other organizations in the academe. It is also responsible for any official correspondence to other entities (e.g. companies, alumni sponsors) outside of the academe.

Another duty of the committee is taking care of all announcements of the organization. It is tasked to maintain and update the organization calendar (located at the organization lounge) and the organization bulletin board (located at the Chemical Engineering Department.) It is also tasked to set up and take care of organization exhibits during the annual UP ALCHEMES Month.

Furthermore, the activation and maintenance of the UP ALCHEMES website (upalchemes.co.cc and upalchemes.tk) is a continuing endeavor of the committee.
'''''''We have gone far, and we are going further.
We strive, not for perfection, but for excellence.'''''''

==History==

==Mission and Vision==

==Committees==

* Environmental Programs
o Concert for a Cause
o Emission Testing
o Environmental awareness talks (via ACLE)
* Event tie-ups with other organizations
* Maintenance of the organization publication (PURGED!)
* Outreaches and Social Service events
o Book Drives
o Home Building
o Medical Mission
o Orphanage Visits
o Visits to Homes for the Aged
* Alumni Relations
o Alumni Homecomings
o Communication with the UP ALCHEMES Alumni Association (UPAA)
o Communication with the UP Alumni Engineers (UPAE)
